Theett Sini—There is considerable
excitement iu this township lost now
coneerning the Grange movement,
Granges have already been establisixea
at Farquhar and Kirhton, and CM Pri,-
day evening last e meeting was lield at
Cromarty with it view to establishing
one in that vicinity. 4, large number
of farmrrs and others were present, and
unich interest seemed to be manifested
in the proceedings. A delegation from
the Eirkton ledge was present, for the
purpose of expleinihg the peincipal
eetsof the orgenizatien, end the
means )1. which they were te 1eeart
ziea out° The ehair was taken by Mr.
Robert Gardiner. Mr. ltobert Beatty
read the Grange constitution, aed
speeches were made ,by Messrs. Alex.
Duncan, Denaldson, Porter. joireston,
,and Bi^yans. Tliese gentlerneu defend-
ed the Grange movement, explaining
whereine, en their opinion, farmers
would,bebenefitted by it, and dianounc-
,ed in unneeasured terms the " tricks
mauuers" of the various travelling
agents who infest the country, lying in
Wait fel, the utwary •farmer. Dr. Gar-
ilhaere of Hibbert, spoke in opposition
to the Grange, but -hisarguments did
'Lila not seem to have much weight with
•the meeting. At the elose of the meet-
ing about 20 persons' enrolled thcir
Dames as members. Another meeting,
'We understand, will he held at an early
elttLewhentbe Grange will be organized
in 'due form. One of the principal ob.
stades in the way of the Grangers in
this vicinity is the ruittetance of the
ladies being necessary to the organiza-
tion a each Grange. The initiation
fee for gentlentert is $3, for ladies 50
emits. .

out of danger, and half into sugar heels, and tultivat-
ing each thoroughly. Sugar beets are
superseding turnips in Europe, and the
hot sun in America, they do even better
in Europe. In cold countries, how.
ever, turnips weuld be a surer erop than
beets. One drawback to turnips is
rrrny beetles, which eat the seeding
leaves, while beets are singularly free
feom insect ehemies. It is, however
necessary to sow beets in May. whilst
the turnips above nereed may be sown
in August,
It is an axiom in Europe that root
crops and clover are the key to good
'farming. They exhe.ust 'the land less
and supply more food per acre for the
cattle than any other erops. Root
crops, also, beingeultivated, cleanse the
land from weeds. By tneir broad leaves
they draw more ot their nourishment
from the air than cereals, and 00118e-
quelltiy draw less from the earth. Be
sides, it is in producino• seeds that the
severest drafts aro made on the strength
•of the soil, and root crops proclece no
seed, excepting potatoes sometimes.
The roots, also, feed stock whose man-
ure enriches the earth,
We earnestly orntbeild these great
principles to tbe consideration \of far-
