Now, four years later, the former Crediton resident is dividing his time between working and accepting awards for his investiga- tive reports. "We're really proud of him," said his mother Marg McClure who along with husband Dave still live in Crediton. Their son is a television reporter for a regional investigative in unit in Alberta called, the I Team. Fronted by McClure, the team uses hidden cameras to nab lawbreakers in the act and then confronts them in pub- lic. In a recent article by Peter Trueman in Starweek, a television guide found in the Saturday edition of the Toronto Star, McClure was said to be "a kind of Alberta Bat- man to chisellers, small-time crooks, unethical businessmen and assorted rip-off artists. 'Getting this sort of stuff on the air is what TV news ought to be about," Trueman wrote. "The I Team, in my view, is one of the best things to hit Canadian TV journalism in some time," he said. And in mid-April McClure was recognized for his efforts. He went to Ottawa to receive an award from the Canadian Asso- ciation of Journalists for best in- vestigative story in regional tele- vision. The award was for a program he did on a ranch for young au- tistic people. As well,.McClure will be trav- elling to St. Louis in June to pick up a similar award given by Investigative Reporters and Editors. But before the former South Huron District High School student hit it big, he did a brief stint as a student reporter for the Times Advocate in 1981-82. From there here went off to Queen's University working each sum- mer at daily newspapers before moving out west to work at a daily in Edmonton before moving to televison. They also attended the annual conference of Anglican Church Women at St. Paul's Cathedral in London on Saturday with over 200 ladies from around the Diocese. The focus for 1994 is Christian Outreach. Rev. Beverley A. Wheeler, Chaplain to the A.C.W. delivered the message. The Angli- can Church Army in Canada pro- vided music and the message in the afternoon session with Bishop Peck, celebrant for the Holy Eu- charist, the homily and the An- nouncement of Laying on of Hands. The day proved to be a very inspirational experience for all. Personals Hazel Davis called on Ethel Copeland in St. Mary's Hospital Saturday evening. Heather MacGillivray is recuper- ating at her parents home following surgery in Victoria Hospital. Get well wishes go out to them both from their friends and rela- tives at St. Patrick's. They are still needing volunteer teachers. There will be a meeting for the teachers to discuss curriculum at Brucefield United Church at 8 p.m., May 5. Varna U.C.W. will meet at the Church at 8 p.m. on May 5. Youth Group for grade nine and up will resume May 22 at 7 p.m. Watch the paper for further details. Yard Sale Varna's Annual Community Yard Sale will be held May 22 and 23 as usual at the Complex starting at 9 a.m. 441 ShutterBugs The third meeting of the Varna ShutterBugs was held April 24. The group went to Dungannon Animal Farm to take photos of the animals. They were most impressed by the camels, zebras and flamingos. They then took a stroll through Bannock- burn. The purpose of the outing was to take photos of nature at its best. The fourth meeting of the Varna Shutterbugs will be held at Julio' Consitt's on May 3 at 7 p.m. Dur- ing this meeting they hope to view their photos taken during the last meeting. HENSALL - This past week has been a busy one for entertainment at Queensway Nursing Home. With spring in the air everyone is craving to get some fresh air. Residents have been starting to get outside for some walks and wheelchair rides. On Monday afternoon, women from the Hensall Presbyterian Church provided a bingo. These volunteers have been doing bingo throughout the month of April. Tuesday afternoon the Grand Cove Singers from Grand Cove Es- tates performed a musical program. They got all the residents singing along and tapping their toes. Thursday evening, Marie Flynn and The Huron Strings played to a full house for the monthly birthday party. They brought some special little guests with them - a number of children did some step dancing. Everyone enjoyed the evening. Those who were celebrating April birthdays included: Hazel Gross, Murray Howe, Ross Thompson, Mabel Shirray, Roberta Fraser, Mu- riel Gunning and Gladys Wein. Just a reminder that on Thursday, May 5 at 2 p.m. Queensway invites all their volunteers to join them for volunteer appreciation day. This is an opportunity for residents to rec- ognize all the people in the commu- nity who donate their valuable time to Queensway.
