Men's fastball
Hodgins returns to
pitch for Imperials
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
EXETER - Derwyn Hodgins
is back.
One of the best men's fastball
pitchers in the province will
once again be pitching for Exet-
er.
Hodgins who has gone as far
as the national championships in
the past, returns to the Exeter
Chrysler Imperials as does
catcher Brian Noyes and second
baseman Jim Allison.
Once again the Imperials will
continue to blend seasoned vete-
rans with youngsters as coach
Fred Cook says he has added
outfielders Jeremy Brock and
Matt Gardner and hopes to have
catcher Gavin Snell and Greg
Dalrymple from the midget team
on a regular basis.
"We have decent speed and
strong pitching. We won't have
to win games 9-8," said Cook.
Rounding out the team which
competes in the South Perth
Men's Fastball League arc third
baseman Kevin Windsor, first
baseman Kevin Lightfoot, pitch-
er -shortstop Dan Heywood, in-
fielder Rod Johnston, catcher -
first baseman Derek Cooper and
pitcher Jeremy Mason.
Obviously Cook is pleased to
have Hodgins back with the
team, even though it looks as
though it may only be on a semi -
regular basis.
"He's playing OASA with
Shedden. He'll miss some games
but there's no doubt he'll help us
in the league."
The South Perth League will
be split into two divisions with
the Imperials playing in the
blue.
"We feel we have a fairly
good team. We're only playing
21 games. There's two divisions,
last year we played 26 games."
While Hodgins will bring a
missed dimension from last
year's team, taken away is the
power hitting of Mike Neil, and
the speed of outfielders Datten
Neil and Sandy Hyde who are
not with the Imperials this
spring.
But look for guys like Wind-
sor and Lightfoot to not only
provide leadership, as they have
in the past, but pick up sortie of
the slack offensively.
"We're hoping that playing his
second year in a row will help
his offence. There was no ques-
tion about his defence," said
Cook of Windsor.
"He's
playing
OASA with
Shedden.
He'll
miss some
games but
there's no
doubt he'll
help us in the
league."
New pitching rule: In fastball
there has always been argument
about the way a pitcher comes
off the mound. Some jump,
some drag their foot, but now
there is a definite ruling.
"The only rule now is they
must start with one foot on the
rubber," said Cook. "Dragging
your foot is gone."
There are several pitchers in
the South Perth League that are
somewhat unorthodox in their
pitching and this could see their
specific techniques controlled.
"They did it for the umpires
sake, not the players," said Cook
of the new rule. "Dragging your
foot is tough to call."
While the Imperials open their
21 -game schedule on Sunday
when they travel to Tavistock to
take on the Merchants, their first
home game is not until Thurs-
day, May 19 when they play
host to the St. Marys Night-
hawks at 9 p.m.
The Imperials host their own
16 -team tournament, June 24-
26.
