Leave Mohawks, Irish
Revington, Needham resign
By Fred Groves
T -A stag'
EXETER - Two local coaches
have decided to pack it in.
Last week, Ken Needham of the
OHA Junior Development League
Lucan Irish resigned and recently at
their annual banquet Dave Reving-
ton told the Senior 'A' Exeter Mo-
hawks he was finished.
Both leave behind five years of
very successful teams, Revington is
responsible for putting three cham-
pionship banners on the wall of the
South Huron Recreation Centre.
"There really isn't one reason,"
said Revington for leaving. "I think
it came down to the fact that the
last two years we had a team capa-
ble of winning but I couldn't get
them to the rink. I couldn't get the
commitment."
He said only twice in 36 games
did he have a full team and that's
surprising considering the Mo-
hawks inked 30 players this past
season.
In an interview with the Times -
Advocate, Revington referred to
himself more as an activity co-
ordinator than a coach.
"We (he and assistant manager
John Pryde) did everything we
could to make it a great place to
play. I don't know how people can't
commit to 24 games (regular sea-
son)."
While several of the Mohawks
did have quite a long drive even to
make it to practice, Revington said
there were other teams that had to
go even further.
"It falls on my shoulders as coach
and general manager to get that
commitment. Dunnville can do it."
Before he came to the Mohawks,
Revington was behind the bench
for the Irish and his commitment to
the sport remains as he is coaching
a London midget all-star team
which practices in Lucan Thursday
nights at 9 p.m.
He seems excited about coaching
the younger players. This team has
several OHL players and 19 from
Junior 'B'.
"We'll see what happens," he said
of his Coaching future. "I didn't re-
tire on a whim. I didn't leave with
something readily available. I'm not
going to miss the excuses, the nega-
tive end ortt."
Revington said it was time the
Mohawks had a change, a new look
and perhaps someone which can
get the players to the games.
When asked if he was going to
take a break from coaching, he
said, "as far as coaching goes I've
had a break the last couple of years.
I've been going to practices with
eight or nine guys."
Needham will
look elsewhere
LUCAN - After five very suc-
cessful years with the Lucan Irish
of the OHA Junior Development
League, Ken Needham is stepping
out from behind that team's bench.
Last week he informed the club's
executive that he would not be re-
turning.
"I'm leaving because it's time for
a change for both the Irish and my-
self," Needham told the Times -
Advocate.
In the past five seasons he has
brought three divisional champion-
ships to the Irish. The team had a
27-11-2 record this year in the west
division but bowed out in the first
round of the playoffs to Seaforth.
Needham said however he isn't
taking a break from hockey and
hopes to land a job perhaps with a
Junior 'B' club.
"I'm going to have to get on the
phone and see what I can rustle
up."
He added there is a possibility he
may apply for the job in Exeter but
clearly pointed out if the Hawks re-
hire George Pratt then he wouldn't
be interested.
Irish president Gary Wilcox who
was given a written resignation said
there is definitely no hard feelings
with Needham.
"I regret accepting the resigna-
tion. I'm looking for a new coach
for next year. There's no animosity,
he's always done well for us."
Lucan general manager Ken
Freeman said he has been ap-
proached by other junior hockey
teams but at this point is not mak-
ing any commitments.
"I've had a few but I can't say to
much right now."
Jamie Pearce has been the assist-
ant coach with the Irish the last
three years, working primarily with
the defensemen and it is hoped he
will return.
Anyone wishing to apply for the
coaching job in Lucan can send an
application to Gary Wilcox, Box
248 Lucan, NOM 210.
David Shaw scores winning goal
Kelps Bruins in 2-1
win over the Devils
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - David Shaw doesn't
score many goals but the one he netted Sunday after-
noon will be well remembered.
The Exeter native scored the winning goal as he and
the Boston Bruins nipped the host New Jersey Devils
2-1 in Game One of the Eastern Conference NHL
playoff semi-final.
"It was a great moment and I'm glad it held up,"
Shaw told CBS Sports after the game. "We're just try-
ing to get the puck towards the net."
His winner came with 7:22 left in the first period and
it resulted in Shaw being named the game's third star.
He walked in from the blueline and sneaked a low shot
inside the post past Devils' goalie Martin Brodeur.
Game Two of the series was played last night in
New Jersey and then it's back to Boston on Thursday
and Saturday.
"We're just trying to play a hard-working defensive
game," said Shaw of how the Bruins are taking on the
Devils.
The Bruins eliminated defending champion Montreal
Canadiens in a hard-fought seven game series.
"We have so much adrenalin flowing, everyone
wants to be out there. They (Devils') have foul sinnlg
lines. We have to work hard and minimize our mis-
takes."
Boston is very strong back on the blueline with of-
fensive -minded Ray Bourque and Al Iafrate but it was
Shaw who scored the big goal.
Anyone wishing to send a Good Luck mesage to
Shaw can do so by signing their name at the following
places: Precious Blood School, South Huron District
High School, Exeter Public School, IGA, Darlings,
Valu Mart, the Town Office, Times -Advocate, Ma-
cLeans, RSD Sports Den, Oscars, Greeting Card
World or Big V.
