GORDIE HOWE ... MR. HOCKEY
GORDIE HOWE retired in 1971, and joined the DETROIT or-
ganization. Come to think of it, nobody really knew what his job
was. For some insane reason, they wouldn't let Gordie help on the
ice, so Gordie just did nothing. Gordie told me they treated him like
a mushroom. They put him in a dark room and every once in a while
they would open the door and throw some crap on him.
Gordic always said his dream was to play with his sons Marty and
Mark. Two years after his retirement, the dream was realized when
HOUSTON AREOS of the WORLD HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
signed the whole family. (I'm told it was the idea of DOUG HAR-
VEY, the great defenceman for MONTREAL. Gordie played 7
years with the boys, Marty and Mark. Four seasons in HOUSTON,
two in NEW ENGLAND and one season in the NHL for HART-
FORD where he played super.
I remember when HARTFORD played my team, the COLORA-
DO ROCKIES, and Gordie killed a penalty almost by himself. i
went to their dressing room after the game and shook his hand and
said, "thanks for the clinic."
Gordie finally retired in 1980 at the
age of 52 years old (which is unbeliev-
able). Just listen to these stats. Most
seasons played 26 years, most games
1767, most goals 801, (GRETZKY's
closing in on this one), most years in
the playoffs 20, 4 STANLEY CUPS,
six HART trophies (MVP's), six ART
ROSS trophies (scoring champion-
ship), 20 all star nominations, and nat-
urally a HALL OF FAMER. And you
wondered why Ihcy called him "MR. HOCKEY"?

Conference sizes could change

EXETER - Something is in the
high school sports wind.
The way in which athletes qualify
for the Ontario Federation of
Schools Athletic Association cham-
pionships could be changing by
next fall.
South Huron District High
School is a member of the Western
Ontario Athletic Association
(WOSSA) which takes in six
counties as well as London. In all,
there are 61 schools which means
it's tough to get to OFSAA.
By September of 1995, there
could be some changes including
the possibility of separating the Hu-
ron -Perth and Oxford -Elgin Con-
ferences and making them into an
association.
"They're trying to make it more
possible for athletes to go to OF -
SAA," said South Huron athletic
director Pat Rowe. "I'd be upset if
Huron -Perth was to go with Ox-
ford -Elgin."
When the Huron -Perth schools
go to WOSSA, they face the Lon-
don schools.
"I like competing with London, I
like the strong competition," said
Rowe.
The Huron -Perth Conference is
somewhat confusing in itself as
there are certain team sports which
simply play by a county basis. In
otherwords, Huron has a separate
conference and so does Perth.
"I think team sports like basket-
ball and volleyball are weakened
because of the split," said Rowe.

ANNUAL MEETING
South Huron Rec Centre
Wednesday Ma
8:00 p.m.
Everyone welcome
44
team from St. Mikes.
They will now head to today's
WOSSA tournament to be held in
Wingham.
South Huron's other girls' doubles
team of Mindy Bell and Andrea
Weigand started off very well but
finished fifth overall and will not
be heading to WOSSA.
Bell and Weigand started out
with strong wins of 15-5 and 15-3
over Goderich and then topped Lis-
towel 15-4 and 15-6. Going against
St. Mike's they won the first game
in the best -of -three but after one St.
Mike's players complained about an
illegal serve, the South Huron girls
lost the next two.
Also qualifying for WOSSA was
the boys' doubles team of RJ Milne
and Scott Parsons. They were unde-
feated until mid-afternoon before
losing twice, and placing fourth.
This year, Huron -Perth is allowed
to have four entrants because they
are the hosting conference. Three
each will come from London, Ox-
ford -Elgin, Middlesex and Lamb -
ton Conferences.
In girls singles' action on
Wednesday, Amy Walper got off to
a good start as she beat two oppo-
nents before bowing out to Clinton
and Listowel.
Several former South Huron stu-
dents, now attending Parkhill's
North Middlesex helped that school
win the overall team title to take
the Middlsex Conference last week.
Ryan Stuart won the boys' singles
event while Jamie Ramer teamed
with Jamie Martelle to take the
boys' doubles title. Also from North
Middlesex, Keri Jo and Leslie Tim-
mermans were first in girls' doubles
while Andrea Robson and Bernice
Willemse were a close second.
Saturday in Wingham at the Hu-
ron -Perth junior tournament, Da-,
nielle Miners was second in girls'
singles and she'll head to the WOS.
SA event this weekend in London.
Also going will be Shaun Simpson
and Kevin Beierling who were sec-
ond in boys' doubles.
