Thursday night, the five year vet- eran was named the club's Most Valuable Player for the second con- secutive year and for the fourth time in five years, he was the club's leading scorer. Shayne Robinson Hawks' forward named west division MVP In a very brief ceremony, coaches Ken Needham and Jamie Pearce handed out this year's awards. Defenseman Ed VanKerkoerle took home the best blueliner award for the third straight year and to no one's suprise, captain Andy Ross and veteran Derek Greenlee shared the award for Heart, Sportsmanship and Effort. Rookie -of -the -Year was high scoring forward Dwayne Price while Lucan Minor Hockey Associ- ation product Shawn Fairweather and defenseman Aaron Moran shared the Most Improved Award. "We had a lot of rookies. It was a tough decision to come up with one," said Pearce of the top new- comer. This was a somewhat difficult year for the Irish as they not only had a lot of newcomers, but at times, it seemed as though the team did not work together. "I want to thank everyone for hanging in tough through Thick and thin," said Irish president Gary Wil- cox. Lucan finished second in the west division behind the league ctt<anJpi- on Mitchell Hawks. Howe.4r, go, the post -season, the Irish went out four straight to Seaforth. "Second place wasn't bad, it was supposed to be a re -building year," said Wilcox. HELP WANTED - Executive members for EMHA EXETER - Something very important was overlooked at last Tues- day night's Exeter Minor Hockey Association annual meeting. Three people who have backed the association, been the mainstays, carried the puck the farthest, or however else you want to say it, have packed it in. Frank and Francis Kints. along with their son DenpiL}fave, decided to leave minor hockey. This will be a very big void to fill, and not to slight those individuals who dill make -the effort to come out to the meeting, but I doubt if one family can be as dedicated as the Kints. There was no special recognition for them at the annual awards day nor at the meeting a few days later. They are a humble group of peo- ple, 1 doubt if they want a pat on the back. What they have done for minor hockey in this area, their commit- ment and unselfishness, speaks for itself. I feel sorry for those who attended last Tuesday's meeting because they not only become part of what is now a very small executive, but their first job is recruitment - go out and find a first and second vice- president and two directors. Don Richardson, now in his eighth year with the EMHA will now sit in the president's chair which was held last year by Mike Anstett. At the start of the meeting, Richardson was verbal with suggestions about hockey, as he has always been. but once elections were finalized he seemed Tess enthusiastic. "This is a very serious situation, he's taking this on with no support," said former EMHA president Sharon Lynn. Lynn, although asked, is not on the EMHA executive this year. Rea- son - she is the president of the Lambton-Middlesex Hockey League. That's a pretty good reason I think. Richardson starts his term immediately with no vice-presidents and two less directors than what he would like to see. Last year the EMHA increased its number of directors to 10. "The purpose of increasing the number of directors last year was so we could get more to run this year," said Lynn. Anstett who will remain a big part of the EMHA as he, along with Karen Monck take on Dennis Kints' former job as Shamrock League rep, said he saw this coming a couple of years ago. "I hope more recruitment takes place to get more parents involved. We have to have genuine commitment," said Anstett. Up to 1/2 price In comparison, there were over 40 people at last year's annual meet- ing, this yea. 'here was half that many. When elections were open, the first position was the Shamrock League rep, Anstett jokingly jumped out of his chair and nominated himself. That may be funny, but its not. If Exeter, as a whole had his en- thusiasm, things might be different There may not be only $1,500 in the bank account. - It's very easy to point fingers when you are dealing with a minor sports association. Why don't the Kints stay on and continue to run things? Why don't former executive members join up? Does a parent have to have a child playing hockey to make a contribution? Instead of counting on those people year -after -year to organize and administer hockey for your children, why don't you do it? i coastal -10y here the line, "I don't have time", well let the tell you that few of those who run minor hockey have the time either. It was quite refreshing to see Monck take on such a tough job like being the Shamrock League rep, she's not only getting her feet wet with minor hockey, she's diving in head first. Well done.
