Centralia Centralia Photography topic at Varna 4-H club meeting By Joan Beierling VARNA - The first meeting of the Varna 4-H Photography Club was held at the Consitt's home at 7:30 on March 31. • Twelve members were present along with two leaders, Julie Con- sitt and Mavis Govier. They elected the following officers: president, Martina Aisenpreis and vice presi- dent Becky Robinson. Roll call was 'If you could take any photograph what would it be? The answers ranged from taking a picture of the sunset, to taking a picture of Roberto Alomar. They then learned how to focus a camera and when to use a flash. The second 4-H meeting was held April 12 at the Turner's home at 7:30. There was 11 members present. Roll call was to show a landscape picture and tell why they liked it. The group talked about where they would like to go and how they pic- tured it. Their next meeting will be April 24 when they plan to visit Dungannon to take photographs of animals. Then they will he going to Bannockburn to take pictures of landscape. Euchre and bake sale The Varna United Church Des- sert Euchre and Bake Sale was held Wednesday at the Complex. The Swinging Seniors were there to en- tertain. Following dessert, euchre was played with 12 tables in play. Marg Hayter took high prize, Helen McKay took the low prize while Ruth Johnston took the prize for the most lone hands. Many people re- ceived door prizes and baking was then sold. Varna area residents arc getting ready for the Annual Yard Sale held at the Complex May 21 and 22 weekend. Anyone interested or wanting more information are to contact Marion Coleman at 263- 5354. Stan -Lee Club The Stan -Lee Club met April 6 at Stanley Complex with 33 members present. Anna Keys opened with a poem from The Voice - The New Year. Minutes were read. Spring Rally is to be held in Holmesville April 20 and on April 27 the Stan - Lee Club members are in charge of a program at Huronview. Ivan McClymont gave a sum- mary about the Senior Games to be held in Strathroy June 20 and 21. Entries are to be in by May 30. Marg Hayter read a poem and gave everyone a "Round Tuit". Leona McBride and Myraline Desjardine played the Easter Parade and the la- dies donned their Easter Bonnets and paraded following the musi- cians. Every now and then a joke was given by Margaret Armstrong, Mae McBride, Relda Robinson and Grace McClinchey. The judges were Bob Stirling and Floyd McAsh and the winners were My- raline Desjardine and Louise Hayter. They ended the program with 'Cruising Down The River' and 'Springtime in the Rockies'. Eight tables of euchre were played. Prizes went to: high lady Myraline Desjardine; low lady Marjorie Stirling; high man Mer- vyn Hayter and low man Bruce Keys. The evening closed with lunch and fellowship. Stan Lee Club members are re- minded of the Zone 8 Rally on April 20 in Holmesville with regis- tration at 9:30 a.m. The group will also be entertain- ing Huronview residents on April 27 at 2 p.m. Those taking part are to be there at 1:30. Don't forget the cookies if you offered to bring some. The next regular meeting will be held May 4 with Norene Hayter and Marjorie Stirling in charge. Hibbert raises $2,582 for Heart and Stroke Foundation By Roberta Templeman STAFFA - Hibbert United Church Women met in the Family Life Centre for their April meeting Wednesday evening. Guest speaker was Sandra Lusk. Lusk is the special education teach- er at Upper Thames elementary school in Mitchell. She stressed that all pupils are special and then talked about the changes in the ways of educating children. Heart and Stroke Canvass The Heart and Stroke Foundation for Hibbert Township raised S2582.00 this year in its annual door-to-door canvass. A sincere thank you to all the people in Hib- bert Township who contributed to this worthy cause. Alice Gardiner was captain for the canvass and canvassers were Margaret O'Reilly, Ruth Ann Grey, Pat Ryan, Bill Lannin, Rose Van - Bergen, Cecilia Ryan, Louise Les- lie, Helen Cook, Betty Kroonen, Dorothy Dillon, Barb Dalrymple, Janice Gardiner, Ruth Ann Riley, Debbie Riley, Ruth Chappel, Mar- jorie Johns, Frances Ashmore, Pen- ny Meikle, Lisa Laing, Connie Fin- layson, Leanne MacLeod, Bernice Norris, Elaine Colquhoun, Freda Kerslake, Doris Jeffery, Marg Schrader, Twyla Waddell, Mary Coyne and Barb Worden. 4-H Staffa #1 "Batters Up" held their achievement night Thursday eve- ning in the Family Life Centre, be- ginning with a potluck dinner. Par- ents and Staffs Womens' Institute members were guests. After dinner. club leaders Freda Kerslake and Doris Jeffery were introduced along with the 17 club members. Carrah Templeman had set up a display showing the different ways to crimp a pie shell. Jackie McCaughey and Anne Kerslake conducted a quiz. Jeff Al- len read a poem which he had writ- ten and Dana Worden entertained everyone with a piano instrumental. Freda and Doris distributed awards to the club members. Personals John and Roberta Templeman were guests at the 10th anniversary dinner for Bill and Mary Rowcliffe Friday evening. Family members attended Rick Templeman's 30th birthday party Friday night. Bacon and egg breakfast served by stewards By Mary Peterson CENTRALIA - We were return- ing home after an evening with friends Saturday night, and stopped the car so that we could watch the Northern Lights. The lights rippled and pulsed in the northern sky, growing and receding as if alive. Bacon and egg breakfast On Saturday, Centralia United Church stewards and their assist- ants served a bacon and egg break- fast. More than 140 people turned out to enjoy the breakfast. Many people contributed to the success of the breakfast. Exeter Fire Depart- ment loaned their grills and Holtz- mann's ordered the groceries. Church service Rev. Aubrey Bell was guest min- ister on Sunday at Centralia. Rev. Bell is a retired Anglican minister who lives with his wife in Varna. Becky Harrett told the children a story about a little girl who wit- nessed an accident. She explained how everyone can be a witness for Christ by showing love and con- cern for others. Next Sunday, Rev. Bell will again be guest minister while Rev. Geddes continues his vacation. Country Jamboree The Country Music Jam»ree at Centralia Community Centre on Sunday afternoon was a foot - stomping good time. Throughout the afternoon, Ross McFalls and fellow musicians entertained the crowd. They'll host another jam- boree during the summer, possibly in June. Watch this space for de- tails. Choir practice Next Sunday night, choir practice continues at Thames Road for the combined church service on May 15. Everyone's invited to come and sing in this choir. Hockey The Stephen Township Bantam hockey team ended a highly suc- cessful season in Otonabee last weekend. Congratulations on win- ning the Ontario championship. Awards banquet Sunday for Zur/ch figure skaters By Carmel Sweeney ZURICH - A bridal shower was held for Joanne Regier Sunday af- ternoon at St. Boniface Parish Hall with several relatives and friends attending. Joanne is the daughter of Warren (Butch) and Helen Regier and en- gaged to Doug Finlay, son of Jim and Anne, both of the Zurich area. The couple are planning to be married in June. Brian and Michelle DePaepe recently spent nine days visiting with her parents and sister in Warner Robins, Georgia. Congratulations to Maureen VandenBoomen and Dale Regier who were married at St. Boniface Church on Saturday. The bride is the daughter of Arnold and Coby VandenBoomen of Zurich. The groom is the son of Bill and Helene Regier of Mt. Carmel. The Zurich figure skating awards banquet will be held April 24 be- ginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Zurich Community Centre. The ladies bowling league have finished another great season last Monday night. Their annual howling banquet in Hensall on April 30. Everyone is welcome to attend the dance that evening at the Hensall Community Centre beginning at 9 p.m. Cost: $5.00 per person at the door with dancing to a live band "Night Wind". A mother and daughter "fun weekend away" to Toronto was held last Saturday and Sunday, to celebrate the 40th birthday of Melissa Francis of Orleans, Ottawa, who arrived by train to be surprised by a welcoming committee of relatives, Sharon Silverstein, London and her daughter Rosie Rothenberg of Brantford; Jean Leng, London and daughter Cindy Gelinas of Dorchester; along with Carmel Sweeney and daughter Heather Klopp, Zurich.
