• Dear Dave -The windows in the rooms in the top floor
of r newer home are covered with condensation during the
Q
winter months. How can we lower the humidity to combat this
problem? At what humidity reading does this occur? Can I fix
this problem?
Drippy Panes.
A•Dear Drippy Panes,
I had to find out a little more informat?on before making any sugges-
tions. You have an energy-efficient/ type home ('ith an unvented
bathroom upstairs. With the prohibitive cost of replacing your sin-
gle pane windows, it appears that/the best alternative is installing
spot ventilation in the bathroom and possibly the kitchen. We must
be careful to maintain a fine balance between the appropriate
amount of ventilation and too much, which would affect your heat-
ing hill.
The installation of a bathroom vent should cost less than a hundred
dollars, if you do the work yourself. The project is relatively easy,
and there are a number of good books, available at the local library,
which give a complete, step by step procedure on the installation of
the vent. Good luck and happy venting.
Q• Dear Dave - I own a 1987 Chevy motorhome that has
bee fitting all winter. I recharged the batteries and they seem
to be working okay, but when I turn the key, all I hear is a sort
of rapid clicking under the hood and the engine doesn't turn
over. Can Iflxit?
Stalled in Seaforth.
A• Dear, Stalled,
We have to go through a process of elimination, in order to locate
our problem. First, let's start with the battery. Disconnect the hat-
ter cables from the battery and jump them directly to another ve-
hicle and try to start the motorhome. If the problem is fixed, change
the battery. If not, check for voltage at the starter relay, if you have
12 volts at the battery side of the relay, move on. Have someone
turn the key and check for the 12 volts at the starter side of the relay.
if yes, move on. Now the fun part - crawl under the camper and
check for voltage at the starter, while someone turns the key. if you
have the 12 volts, change the starter. if you lost voltage anywhere
along the line, change the offending part and try again. if this
doesn't fix the problem, contact me and I'll come out and help you
myself.
If you have any questions for the You Can Fix It Corner, please send
them to David Eastwood, care of the Times -Advocate, Box 850, Ex-
eter Ontario, NOM 1S6.
Questions can be on anything from household repairs, automotive,
recreational equipment, or whatever else is broken and needs fixing.
