Times -Advocate, April 20, 1994 Page 27 GODERICH - Huron -Bruce MP Paul Steckle was pleased with the report released April 14, 1994 by the House of Commons Agriculture and Agri -Food Committee calling upon the federal government to leg- islate a one year moratorium on the use of recombinant bovine somatot- ropin (rBST) in Canada. "We on the committee have done our job and now that the report has been released expect the govern- ment to act quickly and favorably to all the recommendations, especially to legislate a one year moratorium on the use of rBST," said Steckle in a press release. "All the major players effected by the use of rBST have had some con- cerns and we, as a committee, could not ignore them." rBST is a synthetic product equiv- alent to a natura! bovine growth hor- mone. It is responsible for stimulat- ing growth in calves and milk production in adult cows. Some of the recommendations made by the committee include: •a period of adjustment for the dairy industry and more public in- formation 'about rBST; •a review of the impact of rBST on the dairy industry, animal health, genetics, and the U.S. con- sumer reaction; •that imported dairy products be labelled to show that they are re- specting the moratorium on the use of rBST; •and, a look at the effects this may have on human or animal health, or the environtment.
