Gib Dow Jr.. level four instructor
One of nation's best
EXETER - There are about 20,000 ski instructors in Canada but only
about 100 of those hold the high distinction of being Level Four In-
structors.
One of those is Exeter's Gib, Dow Jr.
After eight years of being a ski instructor, five of those as a Level
Three, he recently went and passed the highest level which puts him
among the nation's best.
"It's something I wanted for a long time," said Gib just moments be-
fore he was off to Florida to promote the ski resort he represents.
Mont-Tremblant in Quebec is where he has been an instructor for a
few years and that resort is taking advantage of his marketing skills he
obtained from Fanshawe College to help sell the facility.
"it's a super ski school and another big reason I'm going back there is
because I've got a good job with marketing. I was all over the States in
the fall."
This spring, his five week promotional tour begins in Florida and
winds throughout the United States. Sometimes the schedule calls for a
city per night.
Obtaining the Level Four not only took $600 of Dow's own money
but it took two months to get 11
"The exams are in two parts," he explained. "There's five days in Jan-
uary and at the end of that they tell you if you're ready to write the ex-
ams or not."
He said the first five days is basically an evaluation by those who are
teaching the course. if they feel you are ready to advance to the Level
Four, two months later you come back and write exams and ski.
"Some years no one passes. it's a hard one to get. This year 10 (of 44)
passed and that's pretty good."
When you become a Level Four, people who want to ski come to
you. Dow said they don't even call you by name but identify you with
the blue button which symbols a Level Four. Dow's accomplishment
has drawn the attention of many skiers including former Prime Minis-
ter Brian Mulroney and his family. Dow said he spent three days with
the Mulroney family.
