Players reflect on junior careers
LUCAN - Who ever steps up to fill Andy Ross' skates next season, will -
have a tough act to follow.
He's been with the Lucan Irish of the OHA Junior Development League
for six years, the past three as the team captain. In his first year, he wore
different numbers but in his second, he put on the No. 7 which he has
proudly wore ever since.
Ross was an overager this year. which meant he was 21 and his junior
hockey career is over. He'll miss it and the Irish will without a doubt muss
him.
There were letters every year from Petrolia, Chatham, Strathroy and
London Junior 'B' clubs but although he suited up for one game last year
with London, his heart always belonged to the Irish.
Here's how the Lucan Minor Hockey Association product answered
some randem questions about his career.
Q. In six years you never won a championship, although you won
four division titles, does that upset you?
A. "This disappointed me, and I feel strong about this...is when we lost
the final because everyone left to go to Florida."
Q. You were the captain for three years, what makes a good leader?
A. "What makes a good leader is the people around you who want to
carry the weight for you and put it on their shoulders.
Q. Who was the best player you ever played with on the Irish?
A. "I'd probably have to go with Greg DePrest talent wise. One guy I
would have to mention second is Paul Barnes. Greg is a great player. Even
when they thoughtthey broke his arm, he was up.
Q. What do you think of the Irish bringing in players from London?
A. "It's only been the last couple of years we've gone with a lot of
players from London. Last year we had more because we affiliated with
the London Nationals. This year it (atmosphere) was sour. This year we
got a lot of 'I'm here because London sent me. I'm here for myself and I
don't care about the sweater.'.
Q. Where are you playing hockey next year?
A. "I don't know. I know I'm playing summer no contact hockey."
What the coach said - "You can always count on him, he was always
there. He could play any position and do as well as anyone around. He was
pretty versatile."
- Lucan's Ken Needham who coached Ross for five of his six years.

EXETER - He has a well-mannered, iron jawed way about him and for
the past six years he has been a very important part of the Exeter Junior

Always counted on to be a leader, Dave Dalrymple said goodbye to his
teammates last Saturday night as the Hawks held their annual awards
night.
The big defenceman, who according to coach George Pratt, is the type
of player any coach would like to have,,wa "the team captain this past sea-
son.
This year he capped off his six-year playing career by being named the
team's Best Defenceman and he also won the Leadership Award.
Q. What will you miss the most?
A. "The last two years I've probably had the most fun. I'll miss Friday
nights "
Q. Are you disappointed you never won a championship?
A. "Yes, in the first five years we lost to Lucan."
Q. What happens now with your hockey career?
A. "If the Mohawks don't have a team, I'll try and play rec league.
Q. What makes a good leader?
A. "If they show confidence and respect. They talked open to me and I
returned the favour."
Q. Who is the best player you've ever played with?
A. "Shayne Robinson, the first three years he wasn't but this year he
blew me away."
Q. Was it hard following in your brother Jeff's footsteps?
A. "It was real tough but tougher in minor hockey. He heipea me."
Q. Is this a truly developmental league?
A. "If it's a developmental league, why do you have overagers? That's
why I held back a while this year."
What the coach said - "He's the kind of player every coach would like
to have. He always comes to play. He's a good leader and a good guy to
have on the bench and in the dressing room."
- Exeter's George Pratt, who coached Dalrymple for the past five
years.
