Hawks return toold practice of having coach, manager apply
By Fred Groves

EXETER - For the first time in
several years, the Exeter Junior 'D'
Hawks will advertise for a coach,
assistant coach and manager.
"It's a return to a practice we had
a few years ago," said club presi-
dent Tom McCann. "We felt it was
in line with what a lot of other jun-
ior teams do."
At their annual awards banquet
Saturday night, McCann said the
Hawks will of course ask last year's
manager -coach George Pratt and
assistant coach Dan Mudge to ap-
ply.
The Hawks finished third in the
OHA Junior Development League
west division this season but went
out four straight in the playoffs to
the tough Seaforth Centenaires.
"One of the important stats this
year was that we beat every team,"
said Pratt. The Hawks, Seaforth
and Lucan were the only teams to
get a win away from division win-
ners Mitchell.
Hosting only two post -season
games hurt the club financially
which meant they have a deficit of
about $6,000. However fundraising

Pratt admitted he wished he had
been a little more prepared for the
playoffs.
"I wish 1 would have experienced
it as a player," he said of the quick
exit. "It's too bad the way things
went."
Among the award winners Satur-
day were rookie Nathan Burns who
not only carted home the Rookie -
of -the -Year Award but was named
the Playoff MVP.
He along with Lee Gibbings,
Mark Livermore and Shane Mac-
Donald came from the Clinton mid-
gets which won the OMHA title the
year before.
"Many of these players came to
us with championship teams back-
ground. The brought something to
the Exeter Hawks," said McCann.
This year's team consisted of 10
rookies and McCann said it was a
young team and a very competitive
one.
"Our players can be proud of
their accomplishments. We provid-
ed good entertainment. Anybody
who watched, it was hard to pick
out our first year players."
Exeter said goodbye to veterans
Dave Dalrymple and Todd McCann
as the overagers leave the club.
Dalrymple with six years service
and McCann with three.

behind 3-2 after two periods. Bryon
Ellerington led the Lincolns with
three goals including the winner,
while Nathan Ross and Brock
Weiss also scored. Ryan Freiter,

League playoffs, which included
sweeping St. Marys in three
straight, were shared by John Min-
ers and Joe Bierling.
Dalrymple won the Leadership
Award and Best Defenceman.
"We had a couple of others to
choose from but looking back we
made the right choice," said Pratt of
keeping Dalrymple and McCann
for their overage season.
Like all hockey clubs, the Hawks
will lose some players to Junior 'B',
