Times Advocate, 1994-04-13, Page 14Page 14 Times -Advocate, April 13, 1994 SPORTS Allan Jeffrey of Zurich heads to Base Borden this weekend for the under -17 camp. Zurich's Allan Jeffrey invited to under -17 camp ZURICH - This weekend could well be the biggest in Allan Jeffrey's hockey career. The 16 year-old Zurich Minor Hockey Association bantam player is heading to Base Borden near Barrie for an under -17 evaluation camp. What is rare about his selection is that Jeffrey will be one of the few players there without junior hockey experience. Last year, Zurich sent goalie Kirk Durand and forward Chad Ramer but both were playing in the OHA Junior Development League at the time. A couple of weeks ago, Jeffrey received his invitation to the camp and with that came information on what he had to do to prepare. "I have to stretch and do certain weightlifting. My coach (Pat Bedard) sent in an application and they looked them over and then called me." The purpose of the camp is to identify the best under -17 players in Ontario through a series of evaluation camps so they may prepare to be se- lected to the provincial team. "I thought everyone who put in an application got invited but that's not true." Jeffrey has a calm approach to the game and that will help him down the road. At almost six -feet tall and 185 pounds, Jeffrey has been a forward all his life but this year, Bedard moved him back to the blueline. "I was put back there because of my shot and my size," admitted Jeffrey. "It's tougher but I'm getting the hang of it." He approaches the game calmly, doesn't care who he plays for next year and he's big. A few qualities any coach would notice. 4 Wra of Grapes by Don Cherry GORDIE HOWE ... MR. MR. HOCKEY was born in FLORAL SASKATCHEWAN, and there's a funny story he told me that when he was a kid he signed his autograph different ways and showed them to his mom to see which looked the best. Somehow, he knew he was going to be a star and would you believe it, he played 32 years professional hock- ey in the NHL and WHA. You must remember he played a rough, tough rock'em sock'em hockey. No sweetheart, I'm not knocking people who last a long time playing, but some of them, if they had eggs in their pockets in a game, they wouldn't be broken at the end of the game. That's how HAROLD BALLARD used to put it. Gordie started with the DETROIT RED WINGS, and his sign- ing bonus was a RED WING jacket. He played 4 years for peanuts. JACK ADAMS, his GM never gave him a fair shake. He kept the salaries down all around the league because all G.M.'s would say "how can I pay you what you're asking (when a player went into sign his contract) and then the GM would show them Gordie's con- tract and the player was sunk because Gordie was the best player. The GM would say, "How can I pay you what you want when HOWE is only making this much." This was in the time when players were stupid and did not tell each other what they were making in salaries. The G.M.'s would say "lets not tell anybody how much you are making". As I was always the least paid, I said, "Yeh, I won't, I'm ashamed of my contract as much as you arc." This all changed for Gordie when !+ one morning he was having breakfast with a new team mate called BOBBY BAUN, who asked Gordie how much he was making. When Gordie told him he was amazed because BAUN was making 3 times as much as Gordie. He told Gordie and he was furious. Gor- die's contract tripled, but that's how they treated players back in those days. "When Your Best Just Isn't Good Enough.... You Can Still Look Good" * For Slow Pitch.... Wednesday night, president Bud Markham along with first vice- president Ivan Bedard and second vice-president Nick Littlechild all told the executive they were fin- ished. All three were completing the first year of a two-year term. Also resigning on Wednesday were Su- san Wildfong and Bonnie Du- charme who headed the social com- mittee whose main function was or- ganizing the ZMAA activities at the Bean Festival. It appears as though too much pa- rental interference is one reason for the rash of resignations. "I think if parents would leave the elected people alone to run the business, we wouldn't have this problem," said past president Barb Jeffrey. She added that parents and any- one else, are welcome to contact the nominating committee for the next election which will be held on April 26 during the ZMAA annual banquet. Markham said the reason behind the resignations was personal, but he did however say the orgnaiza- don is in need of some internal or- ganization. "The next executive has to deal with getting a constitution and be- coming a corporation," said Mark- ham. "The new group should make the mission statement and constitu- tion as they see fit." He added the executive also will have to decide whether or not ZMAA will promote hockey and promote those players with excep- tional ability or concentrate more on physical activity.
