Huron Board establishing
anti -racism committee
CLINTON .- The Huron County
Board of Education is in the midst
of putting together a committee to
establish anti -racism policies.
On Monday trustees Bea Dawson
and Doug Garniss were appointed
to the board's newly formed Anti -
racism and Ethnocultural Equity
Committee.
School boards across Ontario
must develop policies on Anti -
racism and Ethnocultural equity by
the end of March 1995. The Minis-
try of Education and Training
wants these polices in place by Sep-
tember 1995.
A memo from the ministry to all
school hoards last summer stated
that education policies and pro-
grams have failed to take into ac-
count racial and ethnic minorities
in Ontario schools.
The committee is expected to
come with a five year plan that will
focus on 10 major ethnic and raci:a
concerns such as:
• hoard policies, guidelines and
practices
• leadership
• school-community partnership
• curriculum
• student languages
• student evaluation
• guidance and counselling
• racial and ethnocultural harass-
ment
• hiring practices
• staff development
The committee will include: one
non-union teaching staff, two trus-
tees, one superintendent or senior
administrator, one principal, one
grade school and one high school
teacher, two students and me com-
munity member.
The complete list of committee
members is expected to be an-
nounced at the May hoard meeting.
