EXETER - Second is probably
a word, at least for the time being
anyway, which should be taken out
of the English language.
Saturday afternoon at the South
Huron Recreation Centre, the Exet-
er Lincolns finished second to the
Campbellford Colts in the Ontario
Minor Hockey Association 'B' addi-
tional entry finals.
They finished second and the
team was Exeter's second best ban-
tam team but in this particular case,
perhaps second isn't the proper
word.
This hockey team really gave it
their all en route to the provincial
final as they eliminated Ilderton in
the quarter -finals and then beat
Glencoe in the semis to get a shot
at the Colts.
Exeter and Campbellford took it
right to the wire as the Lincolns
won a slim 4-3 decision in Camp-
bellford on Friday afternoon and
the next day back in Exeter, came
up short 2-0 in the seventh and de-
ciding game.
"Unfortunately we came up flat. I
think the sixth game was pretty
emotional," said Lincolns coach
Bob Clay about Friday's game.
In Friday's game in Campbell -
ford, the hosts scored a shorthanded
tally to go ahead 3-2 and the clock
was winding down until, with 46
seconds left to play, the Lincolns
got the winner to bring the seventh
game home.
"I say they were disappointed,
they thought they could win it all,"
said Clay.
Despite the efforts of goalie Na-
than Hern who was a standout
throughout the playoffs, the Lin-
colns couldn't get him a goal on
Saturday.
This is the first year the Sham-
rock League has gone to -an addi-
tional entry or Tier 2 league and for
the most part. it was very well re-
cei ved.
It gave a lot of players a chance
to travel, compete at a higher level,
and in the case of the Exeter Lin-
colns, the opportunity to reach the
provincial finals.
"1t obviously paid off for the kids
on my team," said Clay of the
choice to go into the Tier 2 system.
Exeter Minor Hockey Associa-
tion's Dennis Kints said the Tier 2
system will probably stay in place
for the 1994-95 season.
"I suspect we'll do it again. I
heard Lucan didn't go into it but lat-
er, they wished they had," said
Kints.
Despite Injury Kaak brings --home boxing sllver
International
competition

SHIPKA - Sometimes you just
have to go on even though the
pain is almost too much to bare.
In Venice, Italy recently, Ship-
ka native Joe Kaak boxed with a
severely sprained right wrist hut
he still managed to win a bronze
medal.
Although it was his first inter-
national boxing medal, Kaak
was somewhat disappointed he
did not win.
"When i saw the competition,
I said to myself i'ni going home
with gold."
But it seems as though a little
politics reared its ugly head as
of the I I Italian boxers, 10 of
them won gold medals and the
other took the silver.
Kaak was lucky that he only
had two fights as he got a bye in
the first round before taking on a
Russian and winning 8-2 in

points. in that fight he sprained
his right wrist which is his pow-
er hand.
"I kept it wrapped up and i
didn't move it at all. Against the
Italian I wasn't throwing 100 per
cent."
The win against the Russian
put Kaak into the semi-finals
where he lost 10-2 to the Italian.
His coach basically told him that
despite the injury he had to give
it his all if he wanted to win.
Kaak landed one hard right
blow and quickly realized he
was in trouble.
"The pain shot up my arm and
I felt a crunch. I didn't break it,
it was swollen. it's severely
sprained. I had to change my
style, I had to stick and move
and go for points," he said.
in international boxing, there
is a gold medal fight in which
the loser becomes the silver
medalist. The semi-finals are the
bronze medal fights which
means two medals are awarded.
"They should let the two
bronze medalists square off.
Whoever wins medals. they
should fight in another tourna-
ment."
Last year Kaak was a member
of a Canadian team which host-
ed the Italian boxers.- On April
17, he will head back to Italy in
a return visit.
"They're returning the favour.
Hopefully I'm fighting the same
light heavy weight and my wrist
is better."
Hopefully Kaak will get the
chance to do a little more tour-
ing of the country because on
this past visit his focus was on
boxing.
"i didn't get to do a whole lot
of sight-seeing because I went
to the semi-finals. i was there to
box, it's my first international
medal."
