Icy precision
36 teams in invitational skating competition
LUCAN - With 36 teams and
about 900 skaters on the ice, per-
haps the greatest feats of precision
were behind the scenes at the
W.O.S.. Invitational Precision Skat-
ing Competition in Lucan Saturday.
While it is usual for such events to
fall behind their timetables and fin-
ish an hour or so late, Saturday's
event not only didn't vary more than
a few minutes from its schedule, it
actually wound up the day an hour
early.
"1 was really pleased with every-
thing," said chairperson Brenda
Smith, the president of the Lucan
Skating Club. "Organizing it is the
main thing. 1 had a lot of good vol-
unteers."
"It's a good fundraiser for the
club," said Smith. "It does help out
with keeping ice costs down."
The competition, which draws
skating teams from as far away as
Detroit, Burlington, Stamford, Lon-
don, Oakville and Mississauga, has
been hosted at the University of
Western Ontario in past years.
Smith said Saturday proved the
event can he a success in other are-
nas.
"We'll look to host it again," said
Smith, and added that the Lucan fa-
cility is more than up to the demand
put on it by such a large event.
There were 10 medal presenta-
tions during the day, awarding a to-
tal of 834 medals to the teams.
