HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes Advocate, 1994-03-30, Page 14Page 14 Times -Advocate, March 30, 1994 SPORTS It's time for the Mohawks to look local for players EXETER - One method doesn't work, so how about another. The Exeter Mohawks have, for the second straight year, failed to qualify for the Southwestern Senior 'A' Hockey League finals. Except for one blowout, the six games against Dunnville were close but un- fortunately for the men and women of the executive who put in a lot of hard work, their team lost four in a row. They opened the best -of -seven series with a pair of wins over the Mudcats but Dunnville replaced their goalie and went 1-2-3-4 you're out Exeter. NHL draft picks Robb Graham and Owen Lessard along with ex -pro Joe Scherer and a cast of other out-of-town hired guns, couldn't get the job done, again. Running a senior hockey club, or even a junior one for that matter is very expensive. How the Hawks, Mohawks and Irish do it, I'll never know. I guess that's where the generous business community comes in. Anyway, the arguement continues about which in the long run would be more practical - a team made up of locals who might bring in more fans on a regular basis or a team of stars which will hopefully win games and pack the building in post -season. Players can't get to practices because of late nights which means they don't get home from a workout until the wee hours of the a.m. That's when they do come to practice. Come the playoffs I suspect there were even some guys who didn't know each others first name. Driving in the car the other day I came up with a quick list of players and where they live who could just as well play for the Mo- hawks. The Mohawks on this dream team would either play in the Southwestern Senior 'A' loop or jump into the increasingly popular WOAA league. Here they are, if I've left someone out, let me know. Goal - Clint McCann, Parkhill; Marty Merner, Zurich. Defence - Barry Baynham, Exeter, Jeff Warren, Centralia; John Bell, Hensall; Dave Dalrymple, Exeter; Jeff Dalrymple, Exeter, Larry Lewis, Exeter, Dan Mudge, Grand Bend, Dale Timmermans, Parkhill; Dean Schram, Exeter; Kris Bedard, Zurich; Kevin Leitch, Denfield; Ed VanKerkoerle, Lucan; Ron Elliott, Exeter. Forward: Kevin McArter, Exeter; Wayne Urbshott, Lucan; Bill Glover, Exeter; Morley Obre, Exeter; Doug Clarke, Exeter; Todd McCann, Exeter; Andy Ross, Lucan; Pete Overholt, Zurich; Jason Schilbe, Zurich; Andy Grainger, Zurich; John Kernick, Lucan; Paul Manders, Lucan; Randy Kraut, Lucan. This lineup wouldn't score a lot of goals, and it wouldn't prevent a lot from being scored either. Some are rec players, some have played a little junior, whether it be B' or 'D', but they all have some talent. There would be no huge mileage cheques being paid and who knows, the days of walking down the street and seeing a Mohawk player, just may return. Suggestions made here are in no way a criticisim of how the team has been run or selected the past couple of years. Coach -general man- ager Dave Revington has been told to put a winning team on the ice and he and John Pryde have beat the bushes and found some very good players. 'But finding talent isn't enough to build a popular local team. It's time to start building with more local players. Last Tuesday night at the Stephen Township Arena I saw what could well be one of the worst displays of poor sportsmanship by fans. Young spectators from Norwich leaned on the glass, screamed and even carried their anger into the parking lot after the game. Perhaps I'd be upset too if my team lost three straight in the OMHA semi-finals. But the game is played on the ice and when adults and youths are ready to fight over a kids' hockey game, that's wrong. We jump ahead to the finals, and HARTFORD is playing the same team, and the guy who hurt Marty is running around as usual. HARTFORD'S winning by 2 goals with five minutes left, and maybe the last time Gordie's going to sec this team. The guy goes into the corner with Gordie and all he can think about is Marty saying "we're not going to let this guy away with it, are we?" Gordie, needless to say, the guy is carried off the ice and Gordic gets a 5 minute major for deliberate injury. HARTFORD almost loses the game and the series. Harry says, "Gordie, for crying out loud, 1 know you wanted to the guy, but this could have cost us the series." Gordie answers "ych, Harry, I'm sorry, but debts have to be paid." Harry says he'll never forget the look in Goalies eyes. $$S 1 MILLION DOLLARS SSS You don't need a big league contract to look like a Pro! Atom 'E' Sonics eliminated in semis THEDFORD - Three games and all of them decided by a single goal. That's playoff hockey and unfortunately for the Stephen Township Sonics, they were on the wrong end. Sunday night in Thedford, the Sonics bowed 7-6 in overtime and were eliminated in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association atom 'E' semi-finals. Shawn Sherwood led Stephen with two goals and a pair of assists while J.R. Davies, Jeremy VanBergen, Bryan Stuckless and Brayden Lord each had a goal and an assist. Also setting up goals were Brian Dixon, Adam McCann and Danny Mosurinjohn. Friday night at the Stephen Township Arena, Thedford squeaked out a 4-3 win as Sherwood had two goals and Finkbeiner netted the other. Lord had two assists and Stuckless set up a goal. Thursday night in Thedford, Sonics' goalie Chris Glavin turned away 25 shots in a 5-4 Stephen win. VanBergen and Lord each scored twice with the other to Mosurinjohn. Finkbeiner had three assists while McCann and Stuckless set up two each. OMHA atom 'CC series between the Exeter Broncos and the Delhi German House. Sunday in Exeter at the South Huron Recreation Centre, the visi- tors outshot the Broncos a whop- ping 41-7 but could only manage to put one puck past Ryan Sullivan in a l -1 overtime tie. Delhi took a four points to two lead in the six -point series which continued last night in Delhi. If Ex- eter won or managed another tie, the next game was scheduled for Exeter at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Craig Overholt scored the lone Exeter goal on Sunday which came 1:06 into the second period. Assist- ing on the goal were Jared Bourne and Steven Rasenberg. With 2:42 left in regulation play, Delhi's Michael Bouw let go with a well-placed shot from the top of the circle which sailed over Sullivan's shoulder and into the corner. The powerplay goal tied the game which eventually went into over- time. Bouw, the slick skating centreman and captain of the German House team was contained the rest of the game by Exeter's Mike Seip and Ryan Groot. Broncos win: Saturday in Exeter, the visitors went ahead 2-0 with about five minutes left in the first period but the Broncos narrowed the gap and were down by a goal with 6:49 left in the second. Rasenberg and Mark Bilinsky scored for Exeter while Andrew Mauer had a strong game setting up both goals. Seip and Matt Rowe also helped set up the goals. In the series opener in Delhi on Thursday, the Broncos opened the scoring at 5:24 of the second frame as Overholt teamed with Bourne but the hosts tied the game up with just 13 seconds left in the period. There was no scoring in either the third period or the overtime.
