Storm take lead in series
need a win to be champs
By Fred Groves

ZURICH - It's been a long, long time since the village of Zurich felt the
glory.
Way hack in 1970 is the last time a hockey team won an Ontario Minor
Hockey Association championship. That year saw the Zurich bantams
crowned kings of the hill.
Sunday afternoon at the Babe Siebert Memorial Arena, the Zurich Storm
grew one game closer to winning the OMHA peewee 'E' title. Led by their
captain Brad Brown and his linemates Jarrett Jeffrey and Matt Denomme,
the Storm are 45 minutes away from breaking a 24 -year drought.
In hack -to -back games this past weekend, the Storm blew past the visit-
ing Ops Flames 8-1 on Saturday in the six -point final series opener and the
next day made it two straight in a not -as -big 4-2 victory.
The next game is scheduled for Friday night in Ops and if necessary
Game Four will go Saturday in Ops.
Despite being physically bigger, the Flames simply could not keep up
with the Zurich speed and when they did manage to hit the Storm blueline
they were met with some persistent opposition.
"I saw them last week. I went down to Peterborough. I knew they were
intimidating," said Zurich coach Dave Hetherington.
While the Flames had several 13 and 14 year-old players over six feet
tall, their larger size didn't seem to rattle the Storm.
"We knew if we played our game, moved the puck, they wouldn't catch
us," added Hetherington.
Zurich's ability to move the puck quickly, especially up through the neu-
tral zone and the fact they have a very strong supporting cast to compli-
ment Brown, Jeffrey and Denomme was the difference.
In Sunday's win, Storm forward Shawn Grainger had the nicest goal of
the game as he was spinning and let go with a shot which went into the top
far corner.
Grainger along with Joe DeBus who came very close to scoring in the
third period, were able to check the Flames so they couldn't get on the
hoard.
"Do what you do best and be happy with it," said Hetherington of his
second line which is somewhat overshadowed by the high -scoring trio.
Quick lead: Zurich took a fast 2-0 lead on Sunday as Jeffrey scored
from Denomme and then Denomme, starring at a lot of open net, scored
from Jeffrey and Brown.
But the Flames battled back and although Zurich goalie Darryl Smale
made the first save, Ops cut the lead in half on a powerplay tally by Mark
VanKootcn.
Grainger made it 3-1 as he teamed with Denomme and Brown as the
Storm went into the dressing room leading by two goals after two periods.
Showing their spirit for the Storm on Sunday were Alicia Schroeder, left; Mandy
Northover and Kelly -Lynn Smith. They helped cheer the Zurich peewees to a 4-2 win
over Oops.
Just 1:40 into the third period, Jeffrey
waited until the goalie went down and
flipped it up high to score a goal assist-
ed by Brown.
With 3:37 left in the game, the Flames
hit the post as they were enjoying a
powerplay and a minute later, still en-
joying the man advantage, Jeremy
Boyce scored to make it 4-2.
Ops pulled their goalie and buzzed all
around Sm le but couldn't score. Zurich
defenseme lieffrlay.and_Mikg
Laporte were very solid around their
own net.
Storm 8. Flames 1l
Taking a 2-0 lead after the first period
and 5-1 after two, the Storm were paced
by Jeffrey's four goals and two assists.
Denomme had a big five -point night as
he scored once and set up four more.
Brown had two goals and a pair of as-
sists.
Also scoring was Grainger while La-
porte had two assists and Matt Arm-
strong, Jennifer Jeffrey and Jacob Brux-
er also helped set up goals.
Storm is brewing: ...In the past five
games, Brown and Jeffrey both have 19
points...Zurich eliminated Thedford in
the semi-finals and Wallace Township
in the WOAA round to get to the
OMHA finals...

Zurich forward Matthew Denomme, right; works hard to get
away from an Ops player during action in Sunday's final se-
ries game in Zurich.
A pile up around Zurich Storm goalie Darryl Smale didn't
bother him in Sunday's game as he allowed just three goals
in two weekend games. Shawn Grainger, left; scored one
goal in Sunday's 4-2 win and defenseman Jennifer Jeffrey
seen here in the net, did a good job back on the blueline.
