Laverne Hamilton, a member of the Exeter Lions Club which sup- ports the Easter Seals campaign in Exeter, says the provincial cam- paign is now able to save about 40¢ an envelope over the way donations were handled in the past. However, local donations do come back into the Exeter area from the Don Mills head office. Hamilton said the mail -in cam- paign, which collects donations in exchange for the stick -on letter seals delivered to each mailbox, raised about $3,000 last year. The Lions supplements those funds up to about $10,000, he said. All the money is used to aid handicapped children and teenagers up to 19 years in the area. It helps pay for nurses, special equipment, and even to send handicapped kids to camp, giving their parents a break. Hamilton said a week at a special abilities camp can cost up to $925, which is why the organization needs every dollar local donors can send in. The Easter Seals raises about 77 percent of its funds from donations, and spends 87 percent of its total directly on programs and services for the handicapped. Over 8,000 Ontario children with physical disa- bilities are aided by their programs. Canada Day grants available from federal government GODERICH - Huron -Bruce MP Paul Steckle says both grant funds and youth awards are available to support Canada Day activities this year. The government is already ac- cepting applications for funds to sponsor Canada Day activities in local communities. The deadline for applications is April 15, so all municipalities and organizations looking for financial aid to give Canada Day a boost for 1994 must have their ideas in by then. Steckle's office also says the Can- ada Day Youth Award will return for 1994, and "is designed to recog- nize and reinforce the outstanding achievements and contributions of young people to their communi- ties," said Steckle. Potential recipients must be 18 or younger and have made a contribu- tion in any number of areas. "Anyone may wish to nominate a young person for this award who exemplifies the qualities of citizen- ship that strengthen our social fab- ric and enrich our national life," said Steckle. The deadline for nominations is April 30. Both applications for grants and award nominations can be sent to the Canada Day Committee for On- tario at 25 St. Clair Ave. E. Suite 200, Toronto, On.
