HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes Advocate, 1994-03-23, Page 14Page 14 Times -Advocate, March 23, 1994 SPORTS Haskett, Munro have bright hockey future ahead of them LISTOWEL - I went on a few road trips last week, Seaforth, Thedford, but the one I enjoyed the most was going to Listowel. I've been putting off this trip which sole purpose was to talk with Lucan Minor Hockey Association products, Chris Haskett and Matt Munro. Bad weather, late nights in a lot of areans, I just didn't have the time. Thursday's trip to the home of NHL great Fred Cy- clone Taylor was certainly worth battling the slippery roads. Although the host Listowel Cyclones were beaten 3-2 by the Cambridge WinterHawks, and later in the week eliminated in Mid -Western Junior'B' playoff action, Lucan residents can be proud of the effort both Haskett and Munro made. They can also keep an eye on these two youngsters as hockey seems to be a very big part of their future. Haskett, who just turned 17 on Friday, is a hopeful to be drafted by an OHL club. Munro is looking towards a scholarship. "There's always a lot of pressure. You never know who is in the stands. A couple of teams have talked to me," said Munro a sure -handed defenseman who assisted on Listowel's second goal Thursday night. Saw a gem in the making Haskett, a very big centreman, started last season with the Lu - can Irish of the OHA Junior Development League. Only 15 years -old at the time, he was snatched up by the Cyclones who saw a gem in the making. Due to injuries on the Listowel team, Haskett found himself playing between a couple of call-ups on Thursday. "I don't get a lot of ice time near the end of the game. Tonight 1 was with two guys from Brussells (Junior 'C' Bulls.)" The Cyclones trip to the semi-finals is the best they have done in several years. Gone are the old uniforms, gone is the old logo and in its place an identity which makes everyone proud. "We've gone a lot further than we did last year. They guys are really excited about that," said Haskett. It was a little tough to interview these two players as they had just lost a heart -breaking playoff game and I caught them not only at a bad moment emotionlly, but physically, They were both pretty tired. Nevertheless they answered my questions and then got back to their teammates. Both Haskett and Munro opted not to move to Listowel which does, at times, have its disadvantages. "I think we miss out on a lot of team activities but me and Hack, we wanted to go to Medway (high school) and finish up our schooling there," said Munro. If the duo for some reason do not advance their hockey career, although I think the possibility of them moving on is very good, at least they can say they played Junior 'B', an accomplishment few players only dream about. Still on Junior 'B' hockey, Exeter's Jason Heywood and Lu - can's Paul O'Shea continue to help the St. Marys Lincolns to a very successful post season in the Western Junior 'B league'. Since there are only three Junior'B' leagues now, once each has a winner, the three champions and three finalists then meet in a round-robin series which will require ten more games each. Af- ter that they continue until finally, the best team in Ontario emerges. I saw some great minor hockey playoffs at the Stephen Town- ship Arena on Saturday and of all the playes I've seen this year at any level, the Stephen Bantam's captain Jeff Glavin really im- pressed me. I'm also a big fan of the Brad Brown -Jarrett Jeffrey - Matthew Denomme line from the Zurich Peewee Storm. That team is also great because of gutsy players like winger Shawn Grainger. Keeping the puck out of the net for the junior girls' team is Amanda Glavin. For hockey fans who think the last name is familiar, you're right. Her brother Andy is a goalie with the North Middlesex Stars of the On- tario Hockey Association Junior Development League. There are also a few other Glavins' putting on the pads and stopping a few pucks. Both Wilson and Hayter are hockey fans and follow the National Hock- ey League. When asked what team they like the best, "Gilmour, the Leafs," said Hayter. Interesting future: The Stephen Township senior girls' team is made up those players between the ages of 14 to 20 while juniors, including Hayter and Wilson, are I 3 -and -under. "We hope to have three teams next year. It will depend on what league we go in to and how we divide them," said Jody Mosurinjohn who coach- es the senior girls' team This year the Stephen Township teams wanted to be part of the newly formed Hockey Alliance organization that administer a lot of ladies hock- ey. But instead, Stephen went north and took on such teams as Ayton and Ripley. "We were playing against girls that are on provincial teams," said Mosu- Skating Lucan set to host 38 teams in precision event LUCAN - Hundreds of skaters of all ages will hit the ice at the Lucan Arena on Saturday for an Invitational Precision Skating Competition which will sec 38 teams compete. There are six different age gmpps beginning with juvenile, 12 -and -under; novice, 12-15; junior, 12-19; senior, 12 -and -over; and adult teams. The teams are also broken down into recreational and competitive divi- sions. "We have a category called Four Star," explained organizer Brenda Smith. "It's a team of eight skaters and there's no age limit." Besides the Classics there are several other local teams which will skate on Saturday. Senior 'A' Mohawks season ends, eliminated by Dunnville 0E74, EXETER - Despite winning the first two games of the South- western Ontario Senior 'A' Hockey League semi-finals, the Exctcr Mohawks have been eliminated by their biggest rival, the Dunnville Mudcats. Sunday night at the South Hu- ron Recreation Centre, the visit- ing Mudcats came up with a slim 3-1 win to clinch the series and put them into the finals against the Dorchester Dolphins. Exctcr fired 15 shots at Mud - cats' goalie John MacDonald but Rohh Graham's goal from Greg Snyder at 4:43 was the only puck to get past MacDonald all night. Geno Lostracco scored in the first period for Dunnville while Bryan Miller netted the winner in the middle frame and later added an insurance marker in the third. Thursday night, with the series tied at two games each, the Mudcats once again opted to go with MacDonald instead of vet- eran Garnet Wilson between the pipes and the result was a 6-5 win for Dunnville. The Mudcats lcd 1-0 after 20 minutes but trailed 3-2 after two periods of play. Greg Murray scored twice for the visiting Mohawks with sin- gles to Richard Hawkins, Todd Broomhead and Owen Lessard. Dunnvill only took two minor penalties and Exeter scored dur- ing both powerplay chances. r (LINTS JNLIMITED BEER & VSINE -- *Customer Brew on Premises * SERVICE SELECTION SATISFACTION GUARANTEED 190 Thames Rd. For girls who want to start playing hockey at a young age, for now they have to skate with the boys until they are 10 and then they can go play for Stephen Township. "The younger girls will stay in boys hockey until peewee. Then they'll start to split them up," said Mosurinjohn of the possible future of ladies hockey. by Irtaaan Mark Coulthard "SPRING CLEAN UP" The very first step you should take to get your lawn off to a good start, is a thorough raking with a good, stiff leaf rake. Use a leaf rake rather than a steel garden rake. The garden rake will tear away too many parts of the turfgrass during this time of year. A thorough raking will remove the surface accumulation of old leaves and twigs from the fall and winter. Spring raking will reju- venate the turfgrass plants by exposing them to air and light. This freshly -raked grass is ready for your first application of fertilizer. Next Week: Spring Lawn Care. See thls space each week for a valuable Weed Man Turf Tip.
