HENSALL - Many people whf
have pets consider their furry little
friends just as important as other
family members.
For that reason it shouldn't corne
as a surprise that pet safety is a
growing concern especially, when
it comes to taking the animal out
for a ride in the car.
"People make sure their children
have seat belts on while in the car
and a pet's safety is just
cant," said dog -owner
Donna Turcott.
That was one reason
Turcott sought out a
seat belt device for her
dog Lucy who accom-
panies her to work each
day.
Turcott is the admin-
istrator at the Queens-
way Nursing Home in
Hensall. And for the past year and
a half Lucy has been used in pet
therapy with the residents.
"It's more of a family atmosphere
with Lucy around," she said.
"Many of the residents respond in a
positive way to her. She makes
them happy."
The dog's role at the nursing
home was another reason Turcott
was concerned about car safety.
"The residents, staff and volun-
teers enjoy having Lucy around. I
didn't want anything to happen to
her while driving to work," she
said.
At first, Turcott considered mak-
ing some kind of a restraining har-
ness for the dog herself.
But then, she saw a program on
television about dogs that adver-
tised such a device.
The next step was to find out how
to buy a pet seat belt locally.
as impor-
She found one just in time to
give it to her pet as a Christmas
present.
Turcott first went to Critter's Cor-
ner in Exeter where she resides.
"I was surprised they stocked
them," she said.
The device looks like any adjust-
able harness that a pet might wear.
But this one is specially designed to
hook onto a car seat belt.
"It's like a padded harness," said
store owner Shelley Grant.
Grant said they corne in three ad-
justable sizes. And
although the seat
belt is geared to-
wards dogs, Grant
said the smaller har-
ness should fit an
adult cat.
Turcott said it
didn't take long for
Lucy get the feel of
wearing the harness.
"At first, I just put it on her while
she was at home and eventually I
started to use it with her in the car,"
Turcott said.
It's been less than three months
since Turcott made the purchase, so
many people are still surprised
when they see Lucy wearing the
specialty device.
"A lot of people are interested in
learning about it. They don't real-
ize such a thing exists," she said.
The harness keeps the dog from
being able to jump around in the
car. Instead the dog is limited to sit-
ting or lying in one place.
"It's a safer way to travel with a
pct," Grant said.
"People take such good care of
their pets. It would be a shame to
see something tragic happen to an
animal that could have been avoid-
ed," she said.
Grant said the seat belt is a rela-

tively new product for pets, but sur-
prisingly sales are steady.
"1 think if more people knew of it,
they would buy the seat belt," she
said.
Both women commented that one
day they expect the device will be
mandatory for all pets travelling in
vehicles.
"I think it's the way of the future,"
Turcott said. "With the dog belted
in, you don't have to worry about
hitting the breaks hard and having
her smashing into the dash or win-
dow."
Turcott said while crying cages
are another alternative o having the
animal roaming free in the car, there
is still the chance the animal will be
jostled around in an emergency situ -

As well, Turcott said having a seat
belt on a pet, prevents the driver
from being injured or distracted by
the pet while driving.
"She never goes in the car without
having it on... just like any other
passenger," Turcott said.
