Make it to post -season and it's a whole new game plan. Just ask the Seaforth Centenaires. Sunday afternoon at the Lucan Arena, they won their seventh straight playoff game, a big 7-1 de- cision over the Irish. Seaforth won all three games. over the Irish last week which drew them closer to winning their OHA Junior Development League west division semi-final series. Last night the best -of -seven se- ries switched to Seaforth where the Cents had the Irish on the ropes and were just one knock -out punch away from heading to the division finals. Although the Irish played one of their worse games of the year on Sunday, Lucan coach Ken Need- ham said a lot of credit has to go to Seaforth coach Maurice Guy for the way he has his team playing. "Don't take anything away from Seaforth. I told the guys (Irish) it's the same 20 guys we played back in October," said Needham. A lot has changed for the Cente- naires since the regular season end- ed. They may have finished sixth in the nine team loop with a 18-18-4 record and 17 points back of the Irish, but they are turning into giant killers. Seaforth eliminted the Exeter Hawks in four straight. "I honestly don't think we should have been sixth," said Seaforth for- ward Chad Ramer, a Zurich Minor The Lucan Irish bench was very quiet during Sunday's game. The Wrath of Grapes by Don Cherry GORDIE HOWE ... MR. HOCKEY It's eleven o'clock in L.A., and the coach of the HARTFORD club of the W.H.A. is doing his job of checking on the players the night before the game; he's warned everybody at practice that day that he was going to check because the club was in a slump and coaches do these little things to shake up the clubs. So he walks along the hall, checks two rooms and finds everybody is in. He looks at his list on the paper and he's coming to GORDIE HOWE'S room. He looks down and he secs a light from under the door. "Geez", he says to himself, "how can I check the room .of one of the greatest hockey players of all time. MR. HOCKEY, I can't walk in his room and say I'm glad you're in, just checking, no way I'd embarrass him that way." The coach was HARRY NEALE, my comrade on HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA. The next morning Harry, who is one of those guys that get up with the birds goes down in the lobby to get his paper, and who is sitting there reading his paper, but MR. HOCKEY. He looks at Harry and frowns. He says, "I thought you were checking the rooms last night?" Harry says, "Well I saw the light under the door and I knew you were in, so I didn't want to disturb you." Gordie answered back, "Look Harry, if I'm going to be part of this club I want to be treated like everybody else. reminds me of the time BOBBY ORR came to me when I was coaching the BRUINS and said (after I blistered the club for their mistakes) "Don, when your gooning the other guys, heck, could you give me heck too?" That's the way the great ones are, they want to be part of the team. They don't want special favours. Pre -Season Sale Wed. Mar. 16 - Sat. Friday night in Seaforth, the hosts won a triple overtime 3-2 de- cision. "The triple overtime we beat them sort of took the wind out of their sails," said Ramer. Sunday, the visitors went up 1-0 at the end of the first period and it was tied when Lucan's Scott Rid- dell came down the wing, burst over the blueline and put an ice lev- el shot just inside the post on Dana Duskocy. That was the only goal Lucan would score as Seaforth led 4-1 af- ter 20 minutes. Steve McInally, who is also helping the Seaforth midgets in their OMHA semi-final series against Exeter, had three goals. Paul McLlwain added two with singles to, Chad Papple and Andrew Scott. Weak blueline: Without their two top defensemen, Ed VanKer- koerle and Jamie Hicks, the Irish were very vulnerable back on de- fence. "It was awful," was about the only words Needham could use to describe the defence. Bantam Corey Smith was called up and he was by far Lucan's best defender. Smith gave out many good hits and showed a lot of hus- tle getting back into the play. Irish goalie Steve Watson who has played well throughout the playoffs, had little chance on most of the goals as the Centenaries came down on two -on -one and sometimes even two -on -none situa- tions. "He mood on his head you can't blame him for anything," said Needham of his puckstopper. After the game, tempers were high in the hallway as former Lu - can defenseman Todd Hayter ver- bally and physically attacked refer- ee Paul Petrie. The linesmen and the Irish coaching staff had to break things up. Cents 3. Irish 2 Friday night in Seaforth, the Cen- tenaries managed a 3-2 triple over- time win. This game stretched into the a.m. as it took over four hours to play. McInally had two goals, includ- ing the winner for Seaforth with the other from McLlwain. Steve Moore and Greg DePrest answered for the Irish. The best chance the Irish had in the overtime was when Moore went in alone on Duskocy who made one of his many big saves on the night. In overtime, McLlwain was sent to the penalty box for playing with a broken stick but the Irish could not capitalize on the powerplay oppor- tunity. Cents 3. Irish 3, Last Wednesday night in the se- ries opener in Lucan, it was 2-0 in the first period for the visitors as Scott bounced one off a Lucan de- fenseman and McLlwain made it 2- 0. Midway through the second frame Riddell teamed with Jeremy Jemec and Andy Ross. Steve Gei- ger added an empty -nester for Sea - forth. Lucky charms:...Lucan had three minor players in Wednesday's lineup as Brent Mills, Jason Hodg- son (who also played Sunday) and Steve Dame were called up...Former Irish Jason Wilson ex- perienced some overtime of his own on the weekend as he scored a goal in the London Junior 'B' Na- tionals triple overtime win over Aylmer. This was incorrect as Lucan beat Thamesford 6-1. We apologize for the error. Seaforth Centenaires' leading scorer Paul McLlwain, left; had a tough time getting away from Lucan's Derek Greenlee during first period action in Sunday afternoon's OHA Junior Develop- ment League playoff game. Both were given penalties on this play. Seaforth won the game 7-1. Steve Watson made a big first period save during Sunday af- ternoon's ftemoon's game against Seaforth.
