Senior 'A' playoffs
Dunnville changes goalies and come back
to tie semi-final series with Mohawks
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
EXETER - The only good thing about Sunday night's game, was that it
ended.
In front of a very large crowd at the South Huron Recreation Centre, the
Exeter Mohawks lost their second straight Southwestern Ontario Senior
'A' Hockey League playoff game to the Dunnville Mudcats.
The best -of -seven semi-final series is now knotted at a game each with
Game Five scheduled for Thursday in Dunnville and then its back to Exet-
er on Sunday for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
Sunday the Mohawks sputtered and muttered to a 7-3 loss. Thursday in
Dunnville they were beaten 5-2.
Hard work and discipline is what Mohawks' coach Dave Revington says
his team has counted on this year but both of those were missing on Sun-
day.
"It just wasn't there, nobody was, going."

What the locals lacked most was aggression and although veteran Barry
Baynham dished out a hard hit in the second period and Greg Ryan
showed some spunk, up front the forwards were somewhat timid.
"We'd like to get Jamie English, Rob Graham and Richard Hawkins
back. It gives us more strength up front. They're three big forwards we
were lacking," said Revington.
Dunnville came out flying and scored just 31 seconds into the game
when Shawn Vaudry floated down the left side and blasted one past Rick
Pikul.
Dunnville goalie John MacDonald only allowed three goals on Sunday night, this wasn't one of them. Here Exeter Mohawks'
forward Craig Oster found himself in the net while Mudcats' Joe Buote tried to untangle them. Dunnville won 7.3 on Sunday to
even the Southwestern Senior 'A' Hockey League series at two games each.

It was l-1 when Jacques Beaulieu got his first of two but the visitors led
2-1 after 20 minutes and were up 3-1 just 1:36 into the middle frame on a
powerplay goal.
Also scoring for the Mohawks was Greg Snyder while Rod Minor with
two, Ken Hewitt, Paul Tyne, John Howatt and Geno Lostracco scored for
the visitors.
Tough call: At the end of the first period, Exeter's Kevin McArter was
given a charging penalty and then at the horn when the two teams began to
leave the ice and head into the dressing rooms, referee Kelly Mellenbacher
gave the Mohawks a bench minor.
;Rules state both teams must wait for the referee's signal to leave the ice.
In Mellenbacher's opinion, Exeter started to exit too quickly.
"1 don't think there's any need for a call like that in this calibre of hockey,"
said Revington. "There were no altercations at centre ice."
In fact there were few altercations at all on Sunday as the Mudcats re-
ceived just four minors while the Mohawks were given seven.
That's a lot different from the three previous post -season games between
the two teams.
"This is a complete reverse, it's a mirror image of last Sunday's game,"
said Revington.
After dropping the first two games of the series, the Mudcats decided to
change goalies and go with backup John MacDonald for the next two.
He responded in a big way, stopping 45 shots on Thursday and turning
away 33 more on Sunday.
"They went with their number one stopper (Garnet Wilson) the first two
games and we scored 13 goals on him. They had their backs to the wall,"
said Revington of the change between the pipes.
Mudcats 5, Mohawks 2
Although it was tied 1-1 after the first period, the hosts came on strong
late in Thursday's game and it was 3-1 after 40 minutes.
Scoring for the Mudcats were Tyne with two, Vaudry, Doug Tucker and
Dave Robertson.
For the Mohawks, Beaulieu and Oster connected in another penalty -
filled game which saw a pair of fighting ejections for both teams.
