Kirkton was the site of the very first store owned and operated by Timothy Eaton, founder of the na- tion-wide department store chain that bears his name. Eaton came to Kirkton in 1856 af- ter leaving his native Ireland. He built a small log cabin on the banks of Fish Creek and ran a general store and post office from there, along with his brother James. He sold the husiness only a few years later, and left for St. Marys, where he ran a dry goods store from 1860- 68. In 1869, he headed for Toronto to found the store that eventually be- came the department store chain and issuers of the famous Eaton's Cata- logue. Canada Post will be issuing a Prestige Stamp Booklet this Thurs- day, which includes 10 43 -cent commemorative stamps, colour pho- tographs, and a written text portray- ing the history of the T. Eaton Com- pany. A presentation is scheduled at 9 a.m. Thursday morning at the Ea- ton's store in Galleria Mall in Lon- don, in which Rob Morley, chair of the Kirkton-Woodham Community Centre board will accept an enlarge- ment of the commemorative stamp on behalf of the community. Ray and Wendy Venturin, the operators of the Kirkton Market will also receive an enlargement of the stamp. The Kirkton Market is the ancestor of the original Timo- thy Eaton business. Julius Doupe, the sixth owner of Eaton's general store, built a new brick building on the property in 1887 and moved the store into it, where it operates to this day. Some Kirkton residents believe the old log store was moved and still stands as part of a home on Mary St. in the village. "Te community of Kirkton played an important role in the for - ululation of Timothy Eaton's busi- ness and customer service princi- ples that are the foundations of the T. Eaton Company," said Edie Col- lins, the market manager of T. Ea- ton. Three quarters of a million book- lets containing 7.5 million com- memorative stamps will he issued by Canada Post to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the founding of Eaton's in Toronto. Eaton is credited with revolution- izing Canadian retailing. In a time when credit, bargaining and barter- ing were the order of the day, he based his husiness on a policy of "goods fbr cash only and at fixed prices". Wendy and Ray Venturin are the current owners of the Kirkton Market, the same business Timothy Eaton founded when he came to Canada in 1856. Eaton's original log cabin store was located directly behind the present brick building. 4.1111004111iiialg .11,1111111 Tasty Nu Bakery >tllOerlrcee...
