Waterfalls can be built anywhere, even indoor By Adrian Harte T -A Editor ZURICH - The employees of Cobble Design in Zurich are going to miss the latest addition to their garage, a huge indoor waterfall and constructed of granite. It was built in only a few days as part of a course in waterfall con- struction and flagstone walkways taught by Milverton stonemason Elroy Wagler for more than a doz- en landscapers interested in this growing field of backyard magic. Stones weighing more than 1,500 kilograms were forklifted into place inside the Cobble Design gar- age. A pond liner underneath al- lowed a flagstone walkway to be built up around the falls, and a false bridge covers what only ap- pears to be a stream connecting two pools. "You can start as low as a few thousand dollars," said Wagler, de- scribing the newfound interest in backyard watergardens. One like the one at Cobble Design, however, could cost up to S20,000 depending on the installation. "There's really no limit," agrees Brian Steckle, of Cobble Design. Although the company has been doing some waterfall construction for customers, Wagner's techniques are a step ahead in getting a more solid final product that can be built much larger if needed. "In doing this you're getting a more natural setting," agrees Cam Steckle. "People are spending more of their money at home to have that vacation at home they can enjoy all year." Waterfalls can be used to disguise dull concrete retaining walls on sloped properties, or can dress up a simple backyard pool into some- thing special. Wagler shows off a plan to add a waterfall beside a swimming pool, and even though it appears to flow into the pool, the false bridge hides the fact the water supplies are separate. Flagstones can overhang the edge of the pool, disguising the straight edges. The waterfall's pond can be a hobby in itself with the care and feeding of water plants and fish. Although the course was taught in Zurich, attendees came from as far as Collingwood and Toronto to study Wagler techniques of choos- ing arranging, cutting, and placing stonework. As stunning as the waterfall at Cobble Design is, it can't stay in- doors forever. Cam and Brian are opening up their doors to any inter- ested members of the public inter- ested in seeing it this Friday evening from 7-10 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m to 5 p.m. After a couple of weeks, the wa- terfall will be broken up for reas- sembly, outdoors, for permanent display at Cobble Design.
