Use of county library
sees big increase
GODERICH - With the state of
the economy, more and more peo-
ple are turning to alternative ways
of recreation and entertainment.
School
calendar
revised
CLINTON - The school
year calendar for Huron
County Board of Education
elementary schools has been
revised again to accommo-
date the requirements for un-
paid leave days for all staff
affected by the Social Con-
tract Act.
In all Huron board elemen-
tary schools, professional de-
velopment days currently
scheduled on June 27 and
June 28 will be moved to
March 24 and 25. The June
dates will now be regular in-
structional days.
As well, Easter Monday,
April 4, will remain as a holi-
day for all staff and students
of the Huron board.
For further information on
schedule changes for all
school boards, parents should
contact local schools which
will be publishing detailed
calendar changes in school
newsletters.
One method that seems to be-
coming very popular is the contin-
ual use of the Huron County li-
brary branches.
In her annual report presented
Thursday at county council, Beth
Ross the county's head librarian
was pleased to announce that
stable operating funding from both
the province and the county al-
lowed the library to maintain ser-
vices at the levels of 1992 as well
as restore hours of operation at the
Wingham branch to their 1991
levels.
The Wingham branch is now
open 35 hours per week and this
past year saw an increase in circu-
lation from 60,142 to 62,275.
There are 4,195 registered'borrow-
ers.
In Exeter, circulation is up to
54,871 from 53,882 while the
branches in Hensall and Zurich are
also up. Centralia increased from
2,044 Last year to 4,776.
"Since 1977 we've had an in-
crease in library use every year,"
said Ross.
She said the library is trying to
move towards getting what she
called an information highway.
Through innovations and good use
of volunteers, "our library staff
across the county has tried to meet
this demand."
In 1993 die Ilurvu County Li-
brary
7-
brary saw the cancellation of some
programs such as the National
Book Festival which brings Canadi-
an authors to local libraries.
