The Usborne Central girls team tied for second place in
Friday's six -team elementary school basketball tourna-
ment. Here they play the McCurdy team.
Boys win, girls tie for first
Exeter teams do
well in six -school
basketball event
EXETER - The basketball
teams of Exeter Public Schools
came out on top in inter -school
competition Friday. The boys'
team won its tournament out-
right, and the girls' team tied with
their rivals from Stephen Central.
Gayle Beucrmann of Zurich
Public School who organized the
girls' tournament in Exeter said
she was a little surprised at the fi-
nal results of the six -team, 15 -
game competition. First, second,
and third places all resulted in
ties.
"Believe it or not everyone was
really close," said Beuermann,
explaining that Exeter and Ste-
phen both came out with 12
points each in the tournament to
tie for first.
McCurdy Public School and
Zurich tied for second with 10
points each, and Hensall and Us -
borne tied for third with eight
points each.
"Nobody sort of marched
through the tournament," said
Beuermann, adding that eight out
of the 15 games resulted in tic
scores.
"Isn't that amazing," said
Beuermann, who observed the
"quality of play was great, fabu-
lous. For a lot of these girls it
was the first time they had played
in tournament."
Players on the girls teams
ranged from grades five to eight,
depending on where the school's
basketball talent lay, said
Beuermann.
In the boys tournament
played at McCurdy, orga7izer
Don O'Rourke said the compe-
tition was not quite so evenly
matched. The Exeter team
stormed through their schedule,
winning every game they
played.
However, the Stephen Cen-
tral team also did well, winning
tour out of five games, losing
only to Exeter.
The McCurdy, Zurich an
Osborne teams all managed
two wins and three losses
apiece, white Hensall had a lit-
tle trouble getting ahead on the
scoreboard, resulting in a
record of 0-5.
"I think it went very well,"
said O'Rourke, who noted that
Exeter's scores seemed lopsid-
ed against their competition,
other teams had good games.
"Stephen had some big scores
against some other teams as
well," said O'Rourke.
The organizers of both the
girls and boys tournaments had
nothing but praise for the offi-
ciating for the annual competi-
tion. Refereeing the courts this
year was a team of volunteer
students from South Huron Dis-
trict High School.
"I thought they did a super
job with the boys," said
O'Rourke.
The Exeter boys team won every game they played, in
cluding this one against McCurdy Public School.
