South Huron musical groups !Grant
advance to the nationals
EXETER - Last week the South Huron District
High School bands and choirs participated in the re-
gionals of the Musicfest Canada competitions.
On Thursday, February 24, the South Huron U.H.S.
Concert Choir, Chamber Choir and their conductor,
Ruth Claessens, travelled to Leamington to participate
in a Regional Musicfest Canada Festival.
The Chamber Choir is a newly formed ensemble
this year at South Huron. This auditioned group is
made up of 17 senior students who are also members
of the Concert Choir. This group was formed to give
committed senior level stu nts the opportunity to
sing more challenging and "cappella" or unaccom-
panied repertoire. In competition the Chamber Choir
sang the folksong, "Danny Boy", a
madrigal, "All Ye Who Music Love"
and a contemporary piece, "Set Me
as a Seal". Sarah Asselstine, a pri-
vate vocaLpusic teacher from the
London area, and Richard House-
holder, from University of Windsor
Faculty of Music, were the adjudicators for this per-
formance. Sarah Asselstine was impressed with the
balance, good diction, and energy of this group. She
also commented "Set Me as a Seal" is a "very difficult
work - good for you"! The Chamber Choir was award-
ed a bronze standing.
The school's Concert Choir is a 65 member, non -
auditioned music ensemble that is open to all students
in the school. They performed three contrasting folk -
songs, "Shenandoah", "Ching-A-Ring-Chaw" and
"Russian Picnic". Because this performance was the
last of the day, the Concert Choir was adjudicated by
an additional adjudicator, John Chalmers, a teacher
from Mayfield Secondary School of the Arts in
Brampton: Richard Householder commented that
there were "good dynamic contrasts; good tempos".
He particularly liked "Russian Picnic". He said it had
"good energy and good phrase leading, and good ex-
pression". His final comment read, "This was your
most effective piece - good range of expression, good
momentum."
All three adjudicators complimented and congratu-
lated O.A.C. student accompanist, Erin Kraftcheck, on
her level and skill of accompanying. Chalmers said to
Kraftcheck on the audio tape critique, "Congratula-
tions to the accompanist. Most choirs can't do "Rus-
sian Picnic" because they don't have anyone who can
play those figures the way you do!" Kraftcheck was
awarded a Musicfest Canada pin in recognition for her
outstanding contribution to the choir.
The Concert Choir was awarded a Silver place
standing and given an invitation to participate in the
Musicfest National Competition in Toronto in May.
On Saturday, February 26, the Concert Bad, Wind
Ensemble, the Jazz Bands with their cond tor, Rob
Robilliard, went to Hanover to compel the Music -
fest Canada regional.
The Concert Band is the intermediate band at South
Huron which has a Targe number of students -who are
in their second year of playing or senior students
working on a second instrument. The Concert Band
performed a march, "Allied Honor", a three move-
ment piece based upon themes by Handel called, "An
Occasional Suite' and a James Swearingen composi-
tion entitled, "Exaltation". The band was compliment-
ed for their "dynamic range' and "very effect blend
and style". The Concert Band received a Silver ("Very
strong silver") just missing qualifying for the Nation-
als.
The second group to perform was the Wind Ensem-
ble. This musical group consists of mostly senior stu-
dents with the most experience in a band situation in
the school. The first piece performed was "El Capi-
tan", a traditional American march by J. P. Sousa.
Compliments were received for the fell of the 6/8 ver-
sus 2/4 time.
The second piece featured O.A.C. french horn solo-
ist, Chris Passmore. "Concert Rondo" was originally
written by Mozart for the french horn and strong or-
chestra. Adjudicator, Denny Ringler,
,omplimented the band for achieving
the delicate balance, the piece de-
serves.
The final piece was the test piece,
"Festivo". Written by a Russian defec-
tor, Vaclav Nelhybel, the piece con-
jures up images of espionage and de-
ception. The percussion section did a fantastic job. The
adjudicator said "I would be very proud to have you as
my band."
The Wind Ensemble received a Gold Award which
automatically qualifies them for the National Finals in
Toronto in May.
At 3:30 p.m. the Jazz Band competed against seven
more experienced groups. Some schools start music in
grades six or seven. At South Huron, the students start
instrumental music in grades nine and 10. This disad-
vantage can show up at this level of competition, how-
ever, the group rose to the challenge on this occasion,
said Robilliard.
The first piece was a Latin number called, "One
More Time, Chuck Corea'. This piece featured on so-
los: Lorna Miller, tenor sax; Aberley Brunzlow, trum-
pet; Troy Ducharme, guitar; Heather Steckle, congas;
Jeff Bowen, bass; Ann Marie Mittelholtz, piano; and
Dave Morlock, drums. Adjudicators, Jeff Jarvis and
Phil Sims, complimented the trombone section for
their excellent sound.
The second piece was a ballad entitled, "Yesterday
When I was Young'. Vocal soloist, Bronwyn Pearson,
was "expressive, in tune and very nice to listen to (ma-
ture concept) - good enunciation."
The third piece was a swing chart called, "Shapin'
Up" by Lennie Niehaus (he wrote the soundtrack for
Follow that bird) and featured Laurie Coolman on
trombone and Molly McClure on trumpet.
The Jazz Band received a Gold Award and also auto-
matically qualified for the Nationals.
One person from each band received an Honour
Award. Heather Steckle, percussionist with the Con-
cert Band; Chris Passmore, french horn with the Wind
Ensemble; and Dave Morlock, drummer with the Jazz
Band were nominated for this recognition.
This year the festival established an All-Star Jazz
Band and tw' students from South Huron were.chosen
for this. group. Trumpet players Molly McClure and
Kim Passmore received this honour.
The school won the door prize which was a shiny,
new Yamaha trumpet.
The day was very long but musically very successful
and Claessens and Robilliard credit the students for
their excellent work and deportment each day.

p.m. Jack Riddell, Dashwood, a
former member of the Granton
Church has offered his service as
auctioneer. There are many inter-
esting things to bid on.
The boys and girls have been en-
joying skating on the ice beside the
former railroad track in the village.
Watching the girls manouvering,
I'm sure they have had a close eye
on Olympic skating on T.V.
Florence Riddell is still a patient
in Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.
