Playhouse Guild presents cheque
By Roberta Walker
GRAND BEND - Members of
the Huron Country Playhouse
Guild met February 23 at Oakwood
Inn for their monthly luncheon
meeting.
Special guest was Max Rhymer,
artistic director of the Huron Coun-
try Playhouse, who was presented
with a cheque for $4,000 from
Guild treasurer Betty Hoyle. This
money goes toward the purchase of
five sets of "legs and borders",
black velour curtains used to frame
the stage and to emphasize its 40
foot depth, depending on the re-
quirements of each play.
Rhymer gratefully accepted the
donation, and invited Guild mem-
bers for a special preview of the
renovated stage. He was asked
about auditions for the 1994 sum-
mer season, to be held March 5 at
Grand Bend Public school Children
under 15 will be auditioned begin-
ning at 10 a.m., women at 2 p.m.
and men at 4 p.m.. Call the Play-
house for an appointment.
Joyce King, projects chair, had
the new quilt on display, along with
a collector doll for the summer raf-
fle. to be dra n on September 4.
Several members already have do-
nated craft items for the gift shop.
Kay Dunbar, in charge of store
staffing, reported that five more
captains are needed with seven al-
ready volunteered, to supervise one
week each of store staff during the
summer. More volunteers are also
required for store staff and for
"Meet and Greet" at the Kiosk.
President Shirley Platt asked for a
convener for the April Spring Tea.
It will probably be held at South-
cott Pines Clubhouse, as the annual
membership tea with no business
meeting that month.
Kate Burnett, of the Playhouse
Foundation, reminded the members
of the need for accommodation for
actors staying in the area during
performance. Apartments are need-
ed for four to five weeks at a time,
with a stove and fridge, and prefer-
ably a separate entrance, at about
$150 weekly rate. Call Gloria Day
at the Playhouse.
Roberta Walker was asked by or-
ganizers of the 1994 Air Show to
enlist the Guild's help in selling ad-
mission buttons. The buttons cost
$10 each, entitling the wearer ad-
mission to the Balloon Fest at Oak-
wood, the air show, free shuttlebus
service to the aircraft display at
Centralia/Huron Park, and $10 free
chips to a casino night at the Lamb -
ton heritage Museum, alt to take
place May 27 to 29.
For each $10 button, $3 goes to
the Children's Sunshine Founda-
tion, $3 goes to the municipality of
Grand Bend, S3 goes to the Legion
and SI goes to the organization
selling the buttons.
The Guild membership enthusias-
tically supported the idea as a com-
munity supporter and a minor
Guild fundraiser.
The next meeting will be March
23 at Oakwood Inn, with a lunch-
eon at 12:30 p.m. The guest speak-
er will be John McHenry, from the
Playhouse.
