EXETER - The Exeter and Area Figure Skating Club put their tribute to
Elvis Presley on ice Sunday afternoon. presenting a skating carnival al-.
most entirely performed to the "king's" music.
Ninety-five club skaters. a 16 -member precision team. and soloists took
to the ice to present one of the best amateur figure skating events Exeter
has seen.
"I was quite pleased with it," said club president Katherine Ens, noting
that the skaters, volunteers, and decorators all came together to make the
afternoon special.
Ens said much of the credit for the event's success has to go to Lorne
Hrudka, the carnival organizer.
The crowd of over 700 certainly noticed the cxtra sparkle given this
year's event, with the ice surface decorated with giant dice, guitars, a city
skyline, lights, and reflective foil.
"More lights and more sparkle," is how Ens described this year's focus.
"It takes a lot of people to pull it off," she added, giving credit to the par-
ents and volunteers who helped with all the details.
The dramatic look of dark ice illuminated with spotlights was a hit with
parents, and a headache for some skaters.
"The only complaints I heard were from the skaters who said it was al-
most too dark," said Ens.
Guest skaters for the afternoon were Kathy Merner, the former Ice Ca-
pades professional from Zurich who now coaches the precision team. and
John Bauman, club pro.
Anyone hoping for a similar carnival next year will have to wait. There
will only be a smaller carnival in December this year, as next the club will
be preoccupied with hosting the annual H.O.M.E. competition.
