Juniors finish up in third
Hawks conclude regular season play
with loss to Mitchell, win over Lambeth

LAMBETH - It's nice to finish
off the regular season with a win.
When you do it against a team
which is not to far behind you in
the standings, that is certainly a
boost heading into the playoffs.
Sunday night in Lambeth, the vis-
iting Exeter Hawks skated to a 6-3
win over the Lancers in OHA Jun-
ior Development League west divi-
sion action. The win saw the
Hawks finish the season with a 23-
14-3 record which they took into
last night's opening game of the
playoffs against Seaforth.
Nathan Burns had two goals for
the Hawks against Lambeth with
singles to Todd McCann, Sean
McCann, Shayne Robinson and
Dave Dalrytnple. Chris Lyndon
started in net but was replaced in
the first by Kirk Durand.
The Hawks led 1-0 at the end of
the first period and 5-1 after two
periods.
Mitchell 5, Exeter 3
Friday night in their final regular
season home game, Exeter Hawks
had a slim 1-0 lead at the end of the
first period but the visiting Mitchell
Hawks exploded for five second
period goals, two of them on the
powerplay.
"Being up 1-0, our guys came out
in the second period and brought it
down a notch," said Exeter coach
George Pratt.
Exeter opened the scoring when
Robinson pounced on a Sean
McCann rebound and put it up high
past Mitchell netminder Elliot
Faust.
The middle frame belonged en-
tirely to the visitors as Kory Dietz
tied the score, Jamie Flood made it
2-1 and then defenseman Jeff
Smith scored back-to-back.
A hard shot by Mitchell's Jarret
Keller and it was 5-1. Pratt yanked
Lyndon and replaced him with Du-
rand who did not allow a goal.
"It was the same against Lucan.
We beat them two -out -of -three pe-
riods. We shut them out for two pe-
riods and we still lost," said Pratt.
"It was just one lapse which we
can't afford to do again."
In the third period Dave Dalrym-
ple let go with a very long fairly in-
nocent shot which handcuffed
Faust and went between his legs.
Exeter's third goal came off a play
which Dalrymple has made work
before.
The veteran defenseman banked
the puck off the boards to a racing
forward in this case, Ray Cousi-
neau who made no mistake as he
beat Faust one-on-one.
One of the many things Mitchell,
the defending champions do well is
forecheck and they really put the
pressure on Exeter throughout the
game.
"Mitchell has a good forecheck-
ing system. In the second period
they were really jumping on us,"
said Pratt
Against Mitchell, Exeter did not
play a very physical game. They'll
have to play a little tougher come
the playoffs.
"If they're not willing to hit,
they're going to get hit," said Pratt.
Most of the physical stuff came
around the goalies in the third peri-
od. Exeter defenseman Jamie Cor-
nish and Mitchell's Todd McCann
wrestled to the ground. (Mitchell
also has a Todd McCann).
Just a few minutes after this alter-
cation, at the other end of the rink,
referee Jeff Smith gave game mis-
conducts to Exeter's Mark Lynn
and Nathan Blight while Dennis
Pearn and Rob Lewis took early ex-
its for Mitchell.
Hawks happenings:—.Geoff
Mauer was called up to fill in some
gaps in Lambeth...Exeter will not
have the services of rugged de-
fenseman Brett Lammie as his card
was not sent in on time...
Referee Jeff Smith stopped the play during action in Friday night's OHA Junior Development League game against Mitchell. At right, Exeter goalie Kirk Durand wandered a little out of his net.
