A most thrilling incident took place.
ON the Yong° etreet wharf this after,

hearty ended in a fearful tragedy., A
lady residing. on Terauley etreet tanned.
M. Jamieson, in company with her
eland, age(1 about eh; years, Vede Walk-
ing in the direetion of Mor4.4-4
coal yard, when the littNefelleve,
his ouriosity beeoming exelted at some
'beats on the bay, approached the wharf,
The mother' walked along, all uncon-
°ions that her boy had strayed from
her side, and it was tiot until she heard
a shriek that she beceme aware of his
absenee. The little fellow had approech-
ed too close to the edge of the wharf,
and tumbled in, but his hat fell on the
1.;round, For •a moment the mother
could not imegiele where her child had
got to, but upon espying the hat the
truth like -lightning fleshed upon het
brain. She theu knew what caused.
the little fellow to shriek. She paused
a moment on the very edge of the whar
td see if he had really fallen. in. In a
short time after the child's head Wee
above water, and he vainly endeavored
to cry, but his mouth was hill, and he
turned his face up to hie parent with a
look that drove her wild, and with a
shriek she sprang into the water, a dis
t mace of ten feet, and almost irxnxiedi
ately dieappeared. A gentleman named
jaines 11aelltlin, of Hamilton, happened
to be near the wharf at the time and
heard the cries for help. Ile was jus
in time to see the woman leap from th
wharf, and without xt moMent's hesi
tation he followod her, A. ".cabman
named Patrick Higgins, less excite
than the other, rushed into one of th
coal offices, got a stout rope and return
ed in time teeke of great service. Mr
Macklin, in jumping into the water
went bead first, and considerably over
shot the place where the WOMELL1 an
child went down. He dived down twice
but could find nothing, but the thir
knee he was successful, as he,, lia
•hardly gone under the water before h
caught hold of the dress of the women.,
1,,eyeaeletleyeeeeleo etenses:AV lien they
_arose he found Iiat she had her child
firmly eloped in her arras. The ser-
vices of the cabman were here mado ap
„eifie-eeet, Ger the sides of the mart' could
not ke surmounted. A loop was put at
one end of the rope and it was lowered
tn th 13 water. Mr. Macklin, almost ex-
heusted, fixed the loop under the child's
arnas and he ae as safely pulled up.
The rope was again lowered, and the
mother, almost dead, was drawn up,
out as soon as she reached safety She
fainted away. The strain on her nerves
had been too severe. Willine hands
soon brought her and her childlack to
consciousness, although not able to
stand from weakness. In the mean-
time Mr. Macklin, who had been in the
water a considerable time, was chiped
ind exhausted, and hardly able to cling
to the rope which was lowered to him,
and he was drawn safely up, and not a
moment too soon, RS had he remained
in the water half a minute longer wit -
out the rope he would have been drown-
ed.
