Friday in Lambeth with Dar- ren Kints between the pipes, the Generals won 5-1. In the three round-robin post -season games, Exeter has outscored their oppo- nents 22-2. The Generals will hosi 1 oiCst on Wednesday. In the first playoff meeting of these two teams, the Generals won big 1 1- I. Whoever wins that series will take on the winner of Lambeth and Dresden. Against Lambeth, Exeter was down 1-0 after the first period but in the second Marty De- Bruyn teamed with Chris Mac- Donald and Trevor Taylor to tie things up. A couple of minutes later Gavin Snell got the winner, a powerplay marker from De- Bruyn and MacDonald. Also scoring were Adam Jean Snell with his second and Glenn Hines. Assisting were Chad Gil- fillan, ian Jean, Ben Armstrong and Matt Godbolt. The Generals coaching staff selected Snell, DeBruyn and Adam Jean as its three stars. After three playoff games, Adan} --loan• leads the offence with five goals and two assists while Ian Jean, MacDonald and Snell all have six points. Bantams bounce back: After dropping their first four playoff games, the Exeter bantam Le- gionnaires have bounced back and won ivy() in a row. Wednesday in Exeter, the hosts beat Ridgetown in a very solid 8-2 contest. While it ap- pears as though Exeter will face the same team in the next round, details were not known as of press time. Jeff MacLean had three goals and an assist on Wednesday while Ryan Beckett and Jeff Sa- raras netted two each with the other from Goeff Maver. The winners scored four pow- erplay goals and one of MacL- can's was shorthanded. Maver and Dave Farquhar had two as- sists while Rob Morrissey and Bill Kline also helped set up goals. Exeter bantam Legionaires forward Gavin Poole had things well In control as he stood his ground In front of the Ridge town net during last Wednesday night's OMHA playoff game fn Exeter. SPQ RTS Times -Advocate, February 9, 1994 Page 19 The science of goaltending gets help from a real teacher By Fred Groves T -A staff EXETER - Imagine making a mistake and a red light goes on be- hind you and you immediately have thousands of fans yelling. That is if they can drown out the horns, hells and other various noise makers. Being a goalie means you are the last guy on the hockey rink to shut the door, hold the fort, keep the had guys away. Goaltending is the position which is often overlooked by coaches be- cause they simply ,don't understand it. It's often been called a science and one which takes nerves of steel, No matter how old a goalie is, the fact of having pucks being shot at him from short and long distances can be frightful, but still, many do it. "It's interesting and 1 like the thrill of pucks corning at rite," said Greg Monck of the Exeter Atom Mustangs. "I've been a goalie since first year novice." Last Tuesday, he and 15 other young goalies from the local Exeter Minor Hockey Association, put on their gear and for an hour learned about their science from a very in- teresting professor. At this year's goalie clinic, the EMHA brought in a specialist. Strathroy's Steve McKichan had the goalies and their shooters going through a four -station drill. They were up, they were down, they were to the left side and then to the right. Move ahead to cut down the angle, hack to protect the goal - all tools of the goaltending trade. He videotaped them and when their on -ice session was completed, McKichan showed them what they NHL's history makers The smallest: Roy Wortens started his career with the New York Americans in the 1928-29 season and in that year he recorded a 1.21 GAA. He was the first goalie to win the Hart Trophy as the league's MVP. He was the first goalie to use the backs of his gloves to divert shots. Wortens was five foot three and weighed 120 pounds. The oldest: While some may argue Johnny Bower was the oldest NHL goalie, it was New York Ranges Lester Patrick. When Lorne Chabot was injured during the April 7, 1928 Stanley Cup playoff game, Patrick, the Rangers' coach had to go between the pipes. He allowed just one goal and New York won their first Cup in overtime. Patrick was 44 years old. First goal by a goalie: On Dec. 8, 1987 Ron Hextall of the Philadelphia Flyers. Longest game streak: The great Glenn Hall played in 502 straight games when he was with Detroit and Chicago. were doing right and what they had to brush up on. Teaching seems to come natural- ly for him and it should be because that's what he is, a Grade 2 teacher. "Now only the principal yells at me instead of 18,000 fans," said McKichan. Lots of time between the pipes; McKichan played foi the Strathroy Junior 'B' Blades before receiving a scholarship with the University of Miami -Ohio he spent two years in the Vancouver Canucks organiza- tion. At Miami -Ohio he received an ed- ucation which he stresses as being very important to all the young goalies he instructs. "I tell them how important it is to have school or a trade. You have to have something to fall back." When he was growing up, putting on the pads several times a week and preparing for what was to be a successful collegiate career, McKi- chan had no idea what was going to happen if and when he made in to the National Hockey League. "I was injured after I played my first game in the NHL. A guy end- ed i iy career." A though McKichan won't elabo- rate because the incident is in the midst of a law suit, he said he gives a lot of his time now to young goal - fes because he figures his career was cut short and he wants others to have a chance at longer ones. "This year I've done goalie clin- ics in about 30 different communi- ties. Any kid that calls me I'll come out and do it free of charge." McKichan brought to Exeter last Tuesday some pretty good creden- tials. After three years of university hockey he was the Canucks' second choice, seventh overall in the 1988 supplemental draft. After university he played games with the Canucks' farm club in Vir- ginia of the East Coast Hockey League. There he posted a 16-1 1-2 record and compiled a 4.02 goals against average. On Tuesday he had a well orga- nized plan and with the help of some Exeter coaches and sharp- shooters from the bantam Legion- naire and midget Generals, made sure the goalies had lots of pucks coming their way. Balance, eye co-ordination, puck handling, skating and angles were just some of the key ingredients McKichan was teaching. Pointing out the finer points of the art of goaltending during last Tuesday's clinic was Steve McKichan. Here he has the attention of the 16 Exeter Minor Hockey Association goalies who took part.
