Moore back on track, scores three for Irish over Belmont
By Fred Groves

LUCAN - The Lucan Irish re-
ceived some good news and some
bad news last Wednesday night.
Winger Steve Moore, second on
the team in scoring last season, is
quickly returning to his old self fol -
Returning to the lineup after a long layoff, Lucan Irish forward
Steve Moore, right; had three goals against Belmont last
Wednesday night as the Irish won the OHA Junior Develop-
ment League game.
Mohawks end regular
season with 7-5 Ioss
DORCHESTER - Jacques
Beaulieau scored two goals but
it wasn't enough as the Exeter
Mohawks lost a 7-5 decision to
the host Dorchester Dolphins
Friday night.
The loss left the Mohawks in a
continual fight for first place in
the Southwestern Ontario Senior
'A' Hockey League with a final
regular season record of 12-10-
2.
Also scoring on Friday for Ex-
eter were defenseman Jeff War-
rens Kevin McArter and Robb
Graham. The Mohawks had sev-
en defenseman and seven for-
wards dressed for the game.
Exeter will now have to wait
until the end of the week to see
who they will play in the first
round of the playoffs.

SHOOT OUTS, GOOD OR BAD?
I remember when MARCEL AUBET said "we got to have
overtime in the regular season", and the cry was 'no way! it's
ridiculous!, we play long enough etc." MARCEL said it's coming.
MARCEL and head of THE MIGHTY DUCKS, MICHAEL
EISNER (I wonder if baseball would have put that name in
Baseball?) are pushing for shootouts and the cry is, ever! It's like
deciding a football game by throwing a football through a tire to
decide a tic football game. It's rinky kink etc., hut folks with big
money like DISNEY CORP. and with a guy like MARCEL
AUBET pushing it, Iikc it or not, it's coming. You k1now what? 1
don't mind it at all.
Number one, it's entertainment and folks we better start getting
entertainment back in the game. I want you to picture this. L.A. vs
PITTSBURGH are tied at 4-4, they have gone through their five
minute overtime. Each team has picked up a point for the tie, so they
have nothing to lose and now we have a shootout for the extra point.
So L.A. coach BARRY MELROSE picks WAYNE GRETZKY to
shoot for L.A. and EDDIE JOHNSON picks MARIO for
PITTSBURGH. We have it set up that the teams can only pick one
player with the reason that talented teams would have five good
scorers while the poorer teams have at least one.
So now we have MARIO circling at
centre, he shoots first just t-,ecause the
game is in L.A., and MARIO goes in
and scores in the top corner. Now the
pressure is on WAYNE. GRETZKY
who dekes the goalie and slides it
home. Now MARIO goes in and
misses a low shot to the left. Now
imagine the excitment in the building as
WAYNE circles at centre ice. He can
win the game. (I can hear the crowd
now) WAYNE goes in, fakes to the left, comes hack on this
backhand and lifts it to the to corner. The players and fans go wild.

lowing a month-and-a-half layoff.
That's the good news.
The bad news is rookie defense -
man Colin Kowalchuk is out for the
season due to a reoccurring thumb
injury.
In a huge 10-2 win over the visit-
ing Belmont Pests on Wednesday
in OHA Junior Development
League action, Moore scored three
goals and set up another as the Irish
snapped out of a two -game losing
slump.
"My eye sight went, I must have
caught a virus. I was out a month-
and-a-half and missed eight or nine
games," said Moore who just now
is slowly beginning to have full vi-
sion.
He had no trouble seeing the
puck and his third goal of the night
came with just 23 seconds left in
the game. Working himself back
into shape has been tough.
"My doctors wouldn't let me do
anything physical to any extent."
But in the last couple of weeks
he's been getting stronger and will
be a big bonus for the Irish come
the playoffs at the end of the
month.
"He's getting better all the time.
He's much better than he was. He'll
be ready for the playoffs," said Lu -
can coach Ken Needham.
On the subject of the post -season,
it's that time of the year where
some players may not get to inter-
ested in the games that are going on
now. The same routine since Sep-
tember and the fact that eight of the
nine teams make the playoffs, does
not spark a lot of interest this time
of the year.
However, Moore said he and his
teammates don't seem to be quite
ready for the second season.
"It's tough because we're playing
inconsistent and we want to get into
a rhythm before the playoffs
come."
Prior to Wednesday's game, the
Irish had lost hack -to -back road
games - they were beaten by Exeter
and then by Seaforth.
Moore wasn't the only Lucan
player to have four points against
the Pests as Scott Riddell, also
coming off the sick list, had two
goals and as many assists.
Greg Deprest had four set ups
while Travis Stinchcombe, Dave
Mancari. Rob Davis, Dwayne Price
and Craig Brown also scored.
More on the news about Kowal-
chuk - although they lose his ser-
vices, it has brought out some good
efforts in other players. On
Wednesday, veteran forward Derek
Greenlee was moved back to the
blueline.
"Greenlee has played three out-
standing games back there," said
Needham.
The Irish are awaiting Kowal-
chuk's replacement, Jamie Hicks to
put on the green -and -white. Hicks
is finishing the high school season
in London. According to Needham,
a couple of other Junior 'D' teams,
including the best of the west Pt.
Stanley were after his servic-es.
Seaforth 7. Lucan 5
Last Tuesday night in Seaforth,
the host Centenaires beat the Irish
7-5 in a game which was tied 4-4
after 40 minutes.
Big Mike Reid, a bantam a year
ago who had three assists against
Belmont, fired two goals in this
game. Also scoring for Lucan were
Hawks still may take over
second place in division
LUCAN After tonight the
Lucan Irish will have but two
regular season games remaining
in their regular season schedule
but second place in the OHA
Junior Development League's
west division is not locked up
yet. .`
Tonight in Lucan at 8:15 p.m.,
they take on the team that could
pass them. in the standings, the
Exeter Hawks.
The Hawks come into to-
night's fifth and final game
against their Highway 4 rivals in
third spot with 53 points com-
pared to Lucan's`43. Good news
for the Hawks` though, they have
a couple of games in hand.
So -if the Hawks were to win
all of their final five games, in-
cluding tonight's and the Irish
drop all three, it would be Exet-
er in front by a point.
This season series is one of
the better ones in the league as
both teams have won twice. The
last time they faced off, just on

a breather helped as they came

Alvinston d4cnseman Jason
Wagner had an outstanding game
as he scored two goals, one of those
shorthanded, and set up three oth-
ers.
The game was sent into overtime
when Oliver Isla centred a pass
from behind the net to Shane
Whiteside with 1:21 left in regula-
tion play.
Both teams scored in the over-
time and with eight seconds left,
Sean McCann nearly scored as he
raced up the ice and had two trys to
put it past Matt Danbrook.
Although Exeter goalie Chris
Lyndon did not have a lot of good
quality shots come towards him,
1
late in regulation time he \vas
called upon to make three big stops
in a row.
January 28, the host Hawks won
5-2.
In the top ten scoring for the
west division, recent stats, have

fairly intense although the,,
players may be getting a little

last week
Andy,,Ross, Jay Jackson and Mike
Robb.
Stuart Ashton started in goal but
was replaced by Steve Watson.
Ashton had to go back in after Wat-
son was ejected for inciting.
Mitchell 6. Lucan 1
To add a lot more bad news to
the Irish, they travelled to Mitchell
on Friday and were trounced by the
division leading Hawks 6-1. Jere-
my Jemec scored the lone Lucan
goal in the third period.
"It was by far the worse game
we've ever played," said a very un-
happy Lucan coach Ken Needham.
He said goalie Stuart Ashton
didn't play that bad but he had very
little support in front of him.
Needham added Mitchell sniper
Kory Dietz was virtually untouched
as he stood in front of the net and
redirected shots at will.
Lucan 5. Seaforth 4
Getting a little payback for a loss
earlier in the week, the Irish beat
the host Centenaires 5-4 on Sun-
day.
DePrest led the offence once
again with two goals and a pair of
assists while Price had a goal and
two assists. Also scoring were Je-
mec and Davis.
