FAMILY DPI hit the trails The Exeter OPP are now patrolling local trails and villages on snowmobiles borrowed from the Wingham detachment. Snowmobiles on patrol EXETER - To those snowrnohilers using the Hay Swamp trails these past few days, it must have come as some surprise. The Exeter OPP have bor- rowed two official snowmobiles from the Wingham detachment and are checking local snowrnohilers for violations. Charges have already been laid to several snowmohilers for trespassing, not having valid trail permits, violating the Liquor License Act, not having insurance, being under age, speeding, or for just plain careless activity while snowmohiling. The OPP warn that the snowmobiles can be out on the trails at any time, anywhere in the detachment's coverage area. This not only includes trails in the Hay Swamp, hut also around focal villages, such as Dashwood, Hensall or Zurich. _ Local youth attend Snowflake '94 retreat By Muriel Lewis GRANTON - At St. Thomas' Anglican Church on Sunday, February 6, , the Rev. Stephen Emery's message was about having a troubled heart, giving your problems to Jesus the Messiah and receiving His Peace. Following the service, it was decided tp forego the 8:30 a.m. service next Sunday, February 13 and attend the Winter Carnival Ecumenical Service at the Kirkton-Woodham Community Centre at 9:30 a.m. At Granton United Church on Sunday, Pirie Mitchell took charge of the service when his message was about 'Another Sermon'. The choir sang 'How Great Thou Art'. The Anglican parish bible study group met at Phyllis Abrams' home with their leader Rev. Stephen Emery on Wednesday, February 2. The St. Thomas' A.C.W. met at Cathie Westman's home for a pot- luck dinner at noon on Friday, February 4. A short meeting followed when Westman led the discussion and plans were made for' the ,area World Day of Prayer service to be held at the St. Thoipas' Anglican church on Friday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. U.C.W. Unit one met for a noon luncheon at Diane Blake's home on Thurs- day, February 3. Blake chaired the meeting and atter opening with tris. hymn 'Stand Up for Jesus', she gave the meditatio6 on Courage form Ephesians 6, closing with prayer. Business discussion included the talent auction on March 8 at the Community centre in Kirkton. Urtit 2 met at Judy O'Neill's home in London on Thursday night. 1 O'Neil opened the program with two readings and then gave a dem- onstration on painting techniques including rag''rolling and sponge painting. Later those present had a chance to try their hands at it. President Sheri McRobert led the business discussion and refresh- ments were served by the hostess. Unit five met at Verneta Baker's home in St. Marys for a potluck lunch at noon on Tuesday, February 1. President Margaret Spence read 'Garden of the Mind' and gave the riteditatlon on 'the right word at the right time' based on the scripture reading from Samuel 19 and 34. The hymn 'My faith looks up to Thee' was sung and was followed by prayer. Eileen Crawford read a letter from Jackie Pierce and when the busi- ness was completed the rest of the time was spent quilting. CLIC Forty-five high school students from. the Community Bible church and local communities spent the past weekend at the Snowflake '94 outh retreat held in Muskoka Woods. They missed the Community Bible church Pre -Adventure Sunday when the rest of the church family enjoyed the enthusiasm of the chil- dren's Bible Hour Ensemble singing the Adventure theme song. Next Sunday, the Snowflake '94 frouths will get to tell everyone what the church family missed. Personals Amelia Jameson, Nora Wissel and Rhea Hardie visited with Floyd and Mary Dykes at Craigholme in Ailsa Craig on Sunday on the occa- sion of their 57th wedding anniversary. Get well wishes from everybody to Audrey Westmen who spent a Couple of days in Stratford General Hospital last week. Times -Advocate, February 9, 1994 Page 7 Premier Rae visits Zurich By Carmel Sweeney ZURICH - Ontario Premier Bob Rae dropped by the Dominion Tav- ern for a luncheon along with sev- eral other MPPs and riding associa- tion member Saturday. He spoke afterward and many had a chance to meet him personally. After- wards a fundraising hockey game took place between the Ontario Legiskaters (with Bob Rae as cap- tain) and the Zurich Polar Kings (with Brad Clausius as captain). All are good sports and played a fun game. It Was really cute to see the children corn Aut on the ice all dressed in their hockey outfits and play along with some of their dads. All proceeds from the evening went to the Zurich Minor Athletic Association. School carnivals Students at Zurich Public School had fun at their own Winter Carni- val last Thursday. Outside in the snow they participated in a variety of activities. Students at St. Boni- face School held their winter carni- val on Tuesday. Dog tags due Dog tags are now due in the Vil- lage of Zurich. All new dog own- ers who aren't on the list from last year are asked to contact Cannel Sweeney at 236-4702. Euchre parties The Zurich Golden Agers will he sponsoring another euchre party at the Hay Township Hall on Monday February 21 at 7:30 p.m. They will he holding their next meeting on February 14 at 2 p.m. The Optimist Club are also hav- ing a euchre tournament at the Township Hall on Saturday Febru- ary 19, starting at 1:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come out and join the fun. Knights of Columbus The St. Boniface Knights of Co- lumbus council will hold its month- ly meeting in the parish hall today, February 9 at 7:30 p.m. Tomorrow they will host the district meeting in the same hall at 7:30 p.m. Figure skating The Exeter Figure Skating Club will be holding its annual skating carnival on Sunday February 27 at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 at, the door, students $2, and children un- der four get in free. This year's show is "Elvis on Ice". Church bake sale St. Boniface Church is planning a parish bake sale to raise money for Brother Bob Mittleholtz's missipn in India. This will replace the annu- al bingo event. The bake sale and social will be held February 20. CWL members will be bringing baking for the event. Volunteer helpers for the fundraiser are needed. Bowl-A-Thon The Big Brothers and Sisters Bowl-A-Thon will be at the Town and Country Lanes until February t3, including the celebrity bowl on Sunday afternoon. Trip of the Month Gerry Zehr was the winner of the trip of the month draw, sponsored by the Zurich Chamber of Com- merce. Zehr won a Toronto Theatre package for two to see Miss Saigon and stay at the Holiday Inn. The Chamber of Commerce will be next meeting on February 15 with dinner at 7:00 p.m. Pancake supper With Shrove Tuesday coming up next week, St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Zurich is planning a pan- cake supper on February 15. The event is being organized by the youth group. Rest Home Auxiliary The February meeting of the Blue Water Rest Home Auxiliary was held last Tuesday evening in the form of a Valentine's Day party, which included music and a sing -a- long. It was reported that the home's Adult Drop -In February 7 Carpet bowling 3 games played Ray Smith 3 wins, score 26 Marion Dearing 2 wins, score 25 Don Maguire 2 wins, score 21 Myrtle Gusso 2 wins, score 20 Cribbage 9 games played Mary Funk took top score with a total of 858 and Wilma Davis was 'ow scorer. tuck shop continues to do well, and more volunteer help is being sought to help run it. The annual quilt will soon be ready to work on, and the St. Peter's CWL will be holding the home's monthly birthday party on February 14. Personals At the Grand Bend Winter Carni- val's fashion show a couple of the models were local people, including Nicole Masse and Steven Dawe. Congratulations to Denise and John McCarrol on the arrival of their second child, a baby boy. Victor and Irene Hartman cele- brated their 44th anniversary last week. John and Bridget Groot cele- brated their 43rd anniversary Sun- day. Birthday wishes this week go out to Beattie Geoffrey, Andrew Rau, Megan Gingerich, and Herb Klopp. Best wishes for a speedy recovery are extended to Marg Neeb, and Ma- rie Gingerich who are presently in hospital.
