Two-week March break approved
CLINTON - The Huron County
Board of Education is not alone in
plans for a two week March Break
for all students in elementary and
secondary schools.
The London and Middlesex
County Roman Catholic School
Board has also confirmed plans for
the extended break.
The extension is in response to
the Social Contract.
Students will not lose any school
lime because remaining profession-
al development days have been
cancelled in the case of the London
and Middlesex board.
Students in the Huron County
Board of Education system will
also finish the year with the same
number of instructional days since
the board cancelled a number of
professional development days ear-
lier this Fall.
The revised schedules should
also reduce bussing problems in
parts of the county where routes are
shared by school boards.
And while students get an extra
week of holidays that is not neces-
sarily the case for all staff.
Huron County Board director
Paul Carroll said alternate arrange-
ments have to be made for staff
making under $30,000 such as sec-
retaries, custodians and part time
teachers.
They are not affected by the so-
cial contract.
That means the extra week at
March Break will either be volun-
tary time off for these people, holi-
day time or reassigned work time.
Bluewater Secondary School is
not affected by the changes.
United Way fundraising up
CLINTON - The Huron County
United Way reports a substantial in-
crease in its 1993 campaign over
1992 donations.
As of December 31, the United
Way had received contributions to-
talling $108,000, compared to
$83,000 at the same time the year
before.
The Huron United Way is only in
its third year. Corporate donations
increased by over $8,000 last year;
employee pledges were up $7,000;
and special canvasses and events
raised more than $10,000 more than
in 1992.
There are 19 memberagencies in
Huron County which are funded by
the United Way, and even though
demand outstrips the funds avails-
- ble, Bill Thompson at the United
Way says the organization is confi-
dent agencies' needs will be provid-
ed for and discontinuation or pro-
gram or service cutbacks should be
minimal.

O'Connor, president and chief executive officer of Ford Canada.

which had the seven foot by four foot banners signed by the public which
will be presented to the Canadian team in Lillehammer, Norway.

Feb. 11 and the games run from Feb. 12-27.
Huron Crime Stoppers
Two break and
enters: crimes of
the week
Crime Stoppers of Huron County and the Exeter OPP are looking for
help in solving the two following break and enters.
•Upon arriving home at 5:50 p.m. on January 13, the owner of a house
at part lot 10 on Concession 12 of Stephen Township saw two male sus-
pects run to a car that was parked in the car port.
The vehicle is a compact hatchback, dark blue, with a third brake Tight.
The car also had red primer on its right rear quarter panel.
Of the two suspects, the passenger was described as about 5'10", wear-
ing a black hat and having blonde collar -length hair. The suspect was also
wearing blue jeans and a blue jacket.
The thieves had gone through the house prior to the owners' arrival and
stole 10 bottles of mixed brands of spirits, a small CD player along with
25 assorted CDs. Theft of further items appears to have been prevented
by the owner's arrival.
•On January 20 at about 3:18 a.m. a front door window was shattered
and awakened the owners of the variety store at 153 Main Street in Dash-
wood.
The owners called the police, who arrived within one or two minutes. A
male suspect was seen running from the front door. The police gave chase
on foot, but lost the man in the village's back yards.
The suspect is described as six -feet tall, 180 lbs, wearing a black bala-
clava, grey insulated coveralls, and black gloves.
A short time later, police located a grey GMC van in the parking lot of
the Dashwood Medical Centre. The engine was running, and a police
check revealed it had been stolen from Goderich. It was learned that a ve-
hicle was then stolen from Main Street in Dashwood, and it is believed
that the break and enter suspect was responsible for this theft as well.
The thief was attempting to steal cigarettes, but was foiled by the arrival
of the police.
