ILDERTON - For those not over-
ly familiar with the sport of figure
skating, this competition may ap-
pear to have a lot of confusion.
A lot of standing around, and a
lot of waiting. Parents shuffle their
feet and listen to their children's en-
thusiasm.
People with headsets and clip-
boards orchestrate the show.
Although the H.O.M.E. (Huron -
Oxford -Huron -Elgin) is the first
step on the road to the provincials,
the pressure is evident.
This year the Ilderton Figure
Skating Club played host to the 553
skaters from the 19 different clubs,
among those Zurich, Exeter, Lucan,
Parkhill and of course Ilderlon.
Next year all eyes will be cast
upon the South Huron ..Recreation
Centre which will be the site of the
1995 event.
This past weekend in Ilderton,
several executive members of th'
Exeter Figure Skating Club, hosts
of next year's competition, made
the trip to get a first hand look at

Of the 553 skaters this year, 123
are in the provincial category. That
means if they finished in the top
two in llderton they head to the
Western Regional Sections in Strat-
ford, the first weekend in March.
This past weekend in Ilderton not
all the skaters were of the same cal-
ibre and not all motivated to coni -

in the four counties a little more
say.
With 553 skaters at this year's
event, it takes a lot of organizing,
planning ahead and just plain co-
opZration from the hosting club.
Katherine Ens, president of the
Exeter Figure Skating Club said
that next year H.O.M.E. expects to

"Our philosophy is we haven't
had to turn any skaters away who
wanted to compete," said George
Thompson, Vice-president of
H.O.M.E.
Back in 1977, a group of skating
officials got together and decided
to form H.O.M.E. Thompson said
since the Western Regional com-
have a lot more skaters competing
and therefore Exeter will probably
have to use Hensall arena as well.
"To accommodate the numbers
we're going to have to," said Ens.
Last year the Port Stanley Club
hosted H.O.M.E. and according to
Ens, made about $7,000.
Ens said H.O.M.E. is not only a
fundraiser but it provides the

wards the future.
"It's a big fundraiser and it's a
great experience. When the Cansk-
aters see what it leads to, its an in-
centive."
The hosting club has to pay a fee
to the Canadian Amateur Figure
Skating Association and from that,
the judges will be paid.
However, Exeter will still have to
take care of arranging accommoda-
tions, and many other details that
go along with a big event.
One of the skaters who will head
to the sectionals in March is Rebec-
ca Jennison who skates with the
Exeter club. Last year the I 1 -year-
old made it all the way to the pro-
vincials where she finished fifth.
Saturday morning after doing her
figures in which she finished first,
Jennison said she was not that ner-
vous about competing at H.O.M.E.
"I was just thinking about doing
good," she said of her preparations.
While Exeter has been host to
many sporting events, with as many
as 600 competitors expected next
winter, this one will be far the
biggest this town has ever experi-
enced.
