Hockey Alumni team look good and raise $800
EXETER - A good cause, a good turnout, a good game.
Although they had a little help from the 'teacher' line, the South Huron
District High School Alumni Panthers skated to a 5-2 win over the current
team last Tuesday afternoon.
In front of a very large crowd at the South Huron Recreation Centre, the
exhibition hockey game raised over $800 and organizers are hoping it will
become an annual event.
Proceeds from the game will be split between the Sunshine Foundation
and South Huron's Challenged Learning Needs Students program.
"If it's able to raise money for the school it will keep going. I was im-
pressed with the turnout," said organizer Jerry Lamport. He, along with
Panthers' coach Dave Cox got the teams together for the event.
There was some very familiar faces in the lineup for the Alumni, many
who were members of the school's first hockey team back in 1987.
Among those who suited up on Tuesday were Tim Moore, Jeff Dalrym-
ple, Jeff Kints, Todd Laporte, Daryl McCann, Rob Taylor, Lamport, Chris
Thompson, Jim Dickins, Rob Waring and Scott Bell.
"There was 120 players that started the first year's tryout," recalled Lam-
porte. "Mr. O'Connell skated us hard. Guys went off the ice sick. We were
in shape by the end of the year."
Back in the late 1980's, when football was a big sport at the local high
school, many, including Lamport played both in the fall.
Among the-noteables who were very impressive on Tuesday were War-
ing who donned the goalie pad, .once again and made several big saves.
Volleyball
Girls push opponents
to final, but beaten
EXETER - Despite playing some
very good volleyball Saturday after-
noon, both the South Huron District
High School Panthers junior and
senior girls' teams failed to win the
finals of their own tournament.
The juniors went up against Sea -
forth where they lost the third game
of the best two -of -three, 15-12.
South Huron's senior girls also
• pushed Strathroy to the third game,
losing 15-6.
Against Seaforth, the junior Pan-
thers slipped behind 6-0 but thanks
to some good work by Lisa Camp-
bell who was diving for a lot of
hits, the hosts came back but were
beaten 15-8.
Seaforth served the ball hard and
accurate throughout the day but in
the second game fell 15-11 to the
Panthers.In that game Cara Gardner
served first for South Huron giving
them a 3-0 Lead.
The game was tied 11-11 but
Gardner served four straight to win
the game.
In the finale, South Huron were
down 7-6 and although they played
well, lost 15-12.
The Panthers advanced to the final
after their day's efforts of splitting
four games with both Central Huron
and Seaforth.
South Huron's seniors opened the
day with 16-14 and 15-8 wins over
Strathroy and later on Saturday beat
the same team 15-8 after a 15-11
loss.
Against Central Huron, the Pan-
thers won 15-3, 15-6, 15-7 and lost
15-5.
In the finals against Strathroy,
South Huron won the first game 15 -
"I've never seen him play like that," said Lamport obviously pleased
with Waring who was named one of the game's stars.
Big defensemen Bell rushed the net in the third period and Dickins, a
former Exeter Junior 'D' Hawk showed he still has a lot of quickness.
Bill Shore, borrowed from the teaching ranks, helped a little with the
Alumni offence as he had two goals, both set up by another teacher,
George McEwen. Also scoring were Lamporte, Laport and Bell.
Ben Armstrong had one goal and set up another for the current Panthers
while Blair Moir got the other.
"They're quick and they're well coached," said Lamport of the 1993-94
Panthers team.
This game was a goalie's battle as Waring played well between the pipes
at one end and at the other Jason Glavin and Mike Schwindt were hot for
the Panthers.
The Panthers return to action today at 3 p.m. when they host Woodstock
Collegiate Institute in an exhibition game. Huron -Perth league action con-
tinues Feb. 4 when they travel to Wingham to face F.E. Madill Mustangs.
The puck got past Alumni goalie Rob Waring on this play dur-
ing last Tuesday's game but he made many big saves during
the exhibition game.
6 but lost the second one, a very
emotional 16-14 decision. In the
second game, Panthers Teresa Petch
made an outstanding play when it
looked as though the ball was going
past her, she reached out and got it
The game wasn't all that serious last Tuesday as Jerry Lam-
porte, left; and Darryl McCann take time out to share a mo-
ment during the Alumni versus Panthers exhibition hockey
game.
