Defence key to Hawks 5-2 win over Lucan
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
EXETER - Good defense is the
key to winning any sport and that's
how the Exeter Hawks won Friday
night.
At the South Huron Recreation
Centre, the host Hawks came -from -
behind to beat the Lucan Irish 5-2.
That win, combined with a 7-2 vic-
tory over the North Middlesex
Stars on Saturday, gave the Hawks
a 20-11-2 record in the OHA Junior
Development League west division.
Against the Irish, the Hawks
were down 2-1 early in the second
period but throughout the second
and third periods, it was Exeter's
strong defensive play which helped
them pick up the win.
"We tightened up a lot compared
to the last couple of times we
played them," said Hawks' veteran
forward Todd McCann.
In the last two meetings between
the Highway 4 rivals, the Irish won
8-7 while the Hawks won 9-7. Nei-
ther of those were defensive gems.
"The biggest thing we stressed
was smart hockey and not to burn
ourselves out," said Exeter coach
George Pratt. "Defense was
stressed and our guys worked well
at it."
Both teams have won two of the
four games between them and
Wednesday in Lucan the fifth will
.be played. Friday's game had a
post -season air to it.
"Before the game 1 told them this
would be like playoff hockey," said
Pratt.
Hawks' goalie Chris Lyndon who
picked up two wins on the week-
end, did not see a lot of shots on
Friday as his teammates made sure
the Irish did not get a chance to
score.
.11 Early in the second period, Irish
defenseman Dave Mancari was
coming out of his own end but was
immediately met at the blueline by
Hawks' centre Nathan Burns who
brought the big rookie down.
The fourth and fifth Exeter Qnals
came from strong forechecking
around the Irish net as Todd
McCann stole the puck and shot be-
tween Stuart Ashton's legs. Todd
took a perfect pass from brother
Scan to score his 24th of the year.
"We just quit in the third period,"
said Irish coach Kcn Needham.
Good goaltending: Despite hav-
ing five goals against him, Ashton
played outstanding and the Hawks
should have had more on the hoard.
In the second period, Dave Dal-
rymple went in and was beaten by
Ashton's quick glove. Later, Burns
let go with a shot which hit the post
and went right to linemate Jon
Schiedel but again Ashton made
the big glove save.
"Before the
game I told
them this would
be like playoff
hockey."
"We had a lot of chances, Ashton
played really well," said Pratt.
"There was a lot of good point
blank scoring chances he stopped."
Scoring for the winners were
Todd McCann with two, Sean
McCann, Burns and Dalrymple.
Answering for the Irish were Rob
Davis and Travis Stinchcombe.
Davis', the first of the game,
came with 19 seconds left in a Lu -
can powerplay. Although he was
well covered in front of Lyndon,
Davis scored from his knees, com-

Wally the Wildcat, also 'known as George Maxey was the
guest attraction at Friday night's game in Exeter. The mascot
of the St. Thomas Wildcats of the Colonial Hockey League
was joined at the game by his daughter Kelly Maxey. Wally
spent time with Exeter's Kyle Schwartzentruber as part of the
Minor Hockey Night hosted by the Hawks.
Lucan defenaeman Craig Brown, left; and Exeter forward Scott Smale go head-to-head during
Friday night's OHA Junior Development League game in Exeter. The host Hawks won 5-2.

pleting a pass from Greg DePrest.
Sean McCann's goal was the nic-
est of the night as he lugged the
puck through the Irish zone and
bulled his way to the net. Ashton
had the puck but his momentum
carried him into the goal.
For Lucan, it was their second
tough game of the week, coming
off a 6-5 overtime win against Mt.
Brydges on Wednesday.
It was a good game but I'm dis-
appointed in the way they played. I
know they can play better," said
Needham.
The regular season is winding
down for all teams and the Irish are
faced with a very busy schedule in
which they play nine games in 18
days.
