Last Wednesday night, three of the Exeter Minor Hockey Associa- tion's Shamrock League teams opened their Ontario Minor Hockey Association playoff¢. Of the three games, two of them ended in victories for the host Exet- er clubs. The Legion Peewees opened with a big 4-1 victory over Forest before the Legionnaire Bantams fell 7-2 to Lambeth. In the final game of the night, the RSD Midget Generals had little trouble with Dresden, winning 6-0. Peewees: After visiting Forest took a quick 1-0 lead it was all Ex- eter the rest of the way. Scott Gilfiil- Ian teamed with Matt Szabo and Chad Dalrymple to tie the score and then Jason Grenier connected from Chad Monteith to give the hosts the lead. David Marshall won the faceoff at the start of the third period and went in on the Forest goalie and af- ter he shot, Monteith banged it in just seven seconds into the period. Exeter goalie Tony Eagleson came up big in the third period making several huge saves -While the visitors were on the powerplay. Late in the game, Marshall stepped in and let go with a quick shot as Grenier and Brian Hayman drew the assists. Bantams: Lambeth put on a lot of pressure early in the game but Exeter's Geoff Maver had lots of net to shoot at and it was 1-0 as he teamed with Dave Farquhar just 2:25 into the game. But the visitors dominated for the rest of the game and Gabe Metron scored four goals and set up two more. Despite having seven goals scored against him, Exeter goalie Jason Lindentield made some big stops in the second period. He got a little help as Bill Kline teamed with Ryan Soldan six seconds into the third period. Friday night in Ridgetown, the bantams lost their second straight, this time 9-5. Scoring for Exeter were captain Jeff MacLean with three, Ryan Beckett and Maver. Dave Farquhar had two assists. Midgets: From the first shift, the midget game was a rough one as Dresden's Darwin Diebel was given a four -minute butt ending penalty and then the visitors very quickly had two players in the penalty box. With 4:39 left in the opening pe- riod, Exeter's Marty DeBruyn took a pass from speedy centre Chris McDonald, went in, let go with a high backhander then scored on his own rebound. In the setond, Adam Jean scored a pair of goals seven seconds apart to give the hosts a big cushion. A Bill Hodge shot from the point drew the assist on the first goal, and brother Ian Jean helped out on the Peewee Legion Stars Jason Grenier ...two points second. With 30 seconds left in the sec- ond, Ben Armstrong got his first of two as the converted defenseman, spun around and put the puck into the far corner. Armstrong teamed with Gavin Snell and captain Trevor Taylor to make it 5-0 and with 52 seconds left in the game Glenn Hines scored from Brent Gibson. This was a very physical game as a Dresden player was ejected for punching Gibson and in the third period Armstrong went to the Chad Monteith ...two points showers early after scrapping with an opponent. Dresden's Brendan Fisher could miss a game or two as he two- handed Snell across the back of the legs with 14 seconds left. The refer- ee decided to end the game after that incident. Exeter goalie Darren Kints re- corded the shutout between the pipes for the winners. The Generals coaching staff se- lected as their three stars of the game: 1. Matt Godbolt, 2. Marty DeBruyn, 3. Darren Kints-Ben Armstrong.
