Officiating tough on Mohawks in crazy contests
By Fred Groves

EXETER - The final home game of the 1993-94 regular season for the
Exeter Mohawks will go down in history as a very memorable one for not
only the team but for the fans.
Sundae night in Southwestern Senior 'A' Hockey League action, the
hosts bounced back from a two -goal deficit to beat the visiting Petrolia
Victorians 9-7. Friday in Oshweken, the Mohawks were beaten 6-5 by the
River Hawks.
In both games, the Mohawks felt, and so did their fans, that Exeter did
not receive very good officiating.
Due to inj ries and suspensions from the two games, the Mohawks will
limp into their final three games, all on the road, with a lot of key players
missing.
Friday in Oshweken, centre Jeff Shipley suffered a broken wrist when
he received a two-handed slash. Referee J.C. Searle did not call a penalty.
"We really got run down Friday night," said Exeter coach Dave Reving-
ton. "We had I 1 skaters and it was a vicious game. The referee wasn't pro-
tecting us."
Sunday in Exeter, centre Tim Shields, just coming back from a bout of
bronchitis, was hit -from -behind and he went into the boards quite heavily.
He wei* to the hospital and came back later with a reported separated
shoulder.
To make things worse, the Mohawks will be without Owen Lessard
whu, after given a checking-from-behi natty, was also given a gross
misconduct for verbal abuse to referee Ste er.
Also ejected from the game were Craig Oster who will sit out several
contests for buttending; Joe Scherer was kicked out for checking -from -
behind and Greg Snyder left for high sticking.
"The game wasn't as rough as the penalties indicated," said Revington.
Exeter's side of the game sheet had a few more infractions on it than Petro-
lia's.
Revington was obviously upset with the officiating his team had on the
weekend and was quite puzzled about the penalty Baker gave to goalie
Trevor Hunter.
Late in the game, Hunter went to chase down a puck behind his net and
when he was run over from behind by a Petrolia player, it was Hunter go-
ing to the penalty box for interference.
"I think he (Baker) got rattled and lost his composure. He was going to
call every infraction he'could muster up. That's why it was a two hour and
45 minute long game."
By the end of the second period, the Mohawks, who started the game
with 14 skaters, had lost Shields, their second best centre, along with their
top offensive line of Oster -Scherer -Snyder.
Both Barry Baynham and Lessard were given ten-minute misconducts in
the second period so heading into the third, the locals had a very short.
bench.
Snyder, although he only played half the game, led the Mohawks with
two goals and three assists while Jacques Bealieau who did a good job of
controlling his frustration, had two goals and an assist.
Also scoring for the winners were Scherer, Wayne Urbshott, Richard
Hawkins, Kevin McArter and Greg Ryan.
Scherer's came just 30 seconds into the game when he threaded a shot
through a very small opening and McArter's, the game winner, brought a
large ovation from the crowd.
Former Exeter Hawk John O'Hara scored once and set up another for the
visitors.
Eighth loss: Friday night's Toss in Oshweken, the Mohawks eighth of
the year, saw Oster score three of the five goals while setting up the other
two. Also scoring were Scherer with two while Snyder had three assists.
The Mohawks travel to Dunnville on Saturday as they face the Mudcats.
Following weekend play, the Mohawks are in a three-way tie for first
place as they, along with Dorchester and Bothwell all have 24 points.
After early lead, West not able to keep up with East

LUCAN - It was just like any
other all-star game.
There was no hitting and it was
all offense and there was only one
penalty called.
While a few short hours before,
the stars of the National Hockey
League were slugging it out in a
goal -scoring marathon, in Lucan
Saturday night the best of the OHA
Junior Development League were
strutting their stuff.
Getting a little revenge from last
year's game, the East division
turned the tables and won very big,
10-5. The West, including represen-
tatives from the Exeter Hawks and
the Lucan Irish, were up 2-0 in the
first period and held a one -goal
lead after 20 minutes.
But when Seaforth Centenaires
Dana Duskocy went between the
pipes in the middle frame, he was
left with little help as the East
swarmed in, firing 23 shots at the
veteran puckstopper.
When Duskocy pulled himself
into the dressing room, the East
held a huge 8-4 lead.
"We just quite. The wheels fell
off and they (East) really picked it
up. We let down and were foolish,"
said Lucan coach Ken Needham
who skippered the West side along
with Jack Chaffe coach of the de-
fending provincial champions
Mitchell Hawks.

DANNY GALLIVAN ...CRY LIKE A RIVER
DANNY didn't know it, but he made me a very sad guy and it is
one of my favorite stories. Hack in 1958, I was playing for THE
DARTH VADER of hockey, EDDIE SHORE with the SPRING-
FIELD INDIANS, the coach PAT EGAN and I had a disagree-
ment, (actually 1 broke my stick over his shoulder in a practice and
he got upset.... no sense of humour), so the next day he was happy to
give me a letter to say I was sent to a lower minor league team
called the THREE RIVERS LIONS in QUEBEC. I asked EDDIE
SHORE where THREE RIVERS was and he said "go through
VERMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE and when you hit the CANA-
DIAN boarder, turn right! (Funny man eh?)
I went through VERMONT and NEW HAMPSHIRE, turned
right, but still got lost. My '57 OLDS '98 with bald tires quit on us in
the middle of QUEBEC. Naturally nobody could speak English to
help me. So we went into the coffee shop, ROSE, myself and 3 year
old CINDY (our daughter). We prayed the car would start, the Lord
answered and we were on our way, but still lost. Finally we had to
take a ferry across the ST. LAWRENCE RIVER to get to the driv-
els. I was parked beside the captain's cabin and could hear the
HABS game on the radio with DANNY Gallivan and i got very de-
pressed. 1 thought to myself what a failure I am. Here's these guys
playing hockey in the FORUM with Danny Gallivan doing his
lovely job and here 1 am being sent to a lower league for breaking
my stick over my coach, making my family pay for my temper. We
reached Three Rivers and it wasn't bad, but I never forgot that empty
feeling on that ferry listening to DANNY.
...IN/THE BOOTH WITH DANNY •
It's 1980 and I've just been told by HOCKEY NIGHT IN CAN-
ADA that I'm going to go to MON-
TREAL and do colour on TV with Dan-
ny Gallivan. I climbed up to the gondola
in the FORUM and there is DANNY
standing there. We start the game and
when I hear his lovely voice, memories
flood back to 1958, the middle of the
ST. LAWRENCE RIVER on a ferry
and how sad I was and now here I am, in
the FORUM, in the gondola with DAN-
NY. How lucky could I be? The Lord
works in mysterious ways.... his won-
ders to behold.
Well, DANNY'S gone now, his beautiful voice has been silenfed
forever. DANNY might be gone, but he'll never be forgotten; we all
loved him.

be the league powerhouse and
clearly dominate the East division,
losing only one game thus far, it
was a pair of Langton Thunder-
birds which put on a show.
Darryl Homick, named the
game's first star, had a goal and
four assists to pace the winners
while teammate Dan Cassidy was
named the second star for scoring;
twice and setting up three more.
Mitchell's rookie goalie Darcy
Ballantyne suiting up for the West,
who allowed just one goal in the
first period, was named the third
star.
Like the NHL all-star game there
was not alot of physical contact
which was not surprising.
"in the first period -and -a -half
there weren't many checks. But the
last period -and -a -half they threw
more than we did. There shouldn't
be that many checks, it should be
for fun and to show their talent,"
Exeter Hawks' Shayne Robin-
son celebrates his first peri-
od goal during Saturday
night's Junior 'D' All-Star
gime in Lucan.

For the Exeter Hawks, defense -
men Greg Dalrymple picked up an
assist for the West and he said the
reason for the‘East come back was
due to the West giving up a lot of
three -on -one situations.
Dalrymple, a rookie on the
Hawks blueline, made a good play
in the first period when, after
breaking his stick, grabbed another
one and went across the ice to stop
a breakaway.
"I didn't know if I was going off.
Someone just gave me a stick so I
kept going," said -Dalrymple.
Big night: Saturday's game,
though an hour late in starting, was
the first year of three consecutive
times the Irish will host the event.
All the teams in the league will
share in the proceeds.
At the dinner and again before
the official faceoff, players were in-
troduced. That and the game itself,
didn't bother Dalrymple.
"I was a little nervous but once it
got started it was like any other
game."
While Exeter coach George Pratt
watched the game carefully from'
above in -the stands, looking at
players which could be tough
against his Hawks in the playoffs,
Needham said he really didn't pay
attention to any particular perfor-
ihances.
"Not in this game. You just let
them have fun and don't even worry
about it."
While there was some confusion
early on as to who was going to
play with who, Seaforth captain
Karsten Carroll had little problem
fitting in on right wing.
A seasoned defensemen with the
Centenaires, he moved up and
scored two goals and set up another
one for the West.
Exeter's Shayne Robinson had a
goal while Lucan's Greg DePrest
had two assists and Irish defense -
men Craig Brown had an assist.

Dropping the puck prior to the start of Saturday night's OHA
Junior Development League game in Lucan were Bill Billington
of the OHA and long-time Lucan Irish executive member, Jim
Freeman. Taking the faceoff were Lucan Irish Greg DePrest,
left; and Bill Huitema of Thamesford.
Hawks winning streak
stopped at five games
ALVINSTON - The winning streak had to come to an end sometime.
For the Exeter -Hawks, their OHA Junior Development League west di-
vision streak was halted at five Friday night as they fell 5-1 to the Alvins-
ton Flyers.
This was a penalty filled game as the Hawks lost their leading scorer
Shayne Robinson for checking -from -behind in the first period and in the
second, Ray Cousineau was given a spearing penalty.
Exeter's only goal came in the second period when Sean McCann
teamed with Nathan Burns and Todd McCann. Chris Lyndon made 27
saves for the visitors.
Irish pluck Flyers: Last Wednesday night in a very cold Lucan Arena,
the Irish doubled thee1f isiting Flyers 6-3.
Up 2-0 after thdliirst period and 3-0 following 40 minutes, Lucan goalie
Stuart Ashton once again saw his shutout bid snapped in the third.
Greg DePrest led the winners attack with three goals and a pair of assists
while Dave Mancari, Mike Robb and Dwayne Price also scored.
The Irish take on the tough Mt. Brydgcs Bulldogs tonight in Lucan at
8:I5 p.m.
Rematch time: One of the best rivalries in the west division continues
Friday night in Exeter when the Irish will laceoff against the host Hawks.
This is the fourth time the two teams have played this year and hack on
Dec. 29, the Irish won a not Jo -pretty 8-7 game which saw DePrest score
shorthanded with five seconds left.
Friday in Exeter is Minor Hockey Night and there will be lots of surpris-
es. Game time is 8:30 p.m. at the South Huron Recreation Centre.
