Hensall Fair might be one day event
HENSALL - Residents at
Queensway spent the middle of
January participating in several
winter activities.
Fun and Fitness classes have
been a little bit different lately.
People have been taking Fun'ology
quizzes and playing word power
games. Last Tuesday, Joyce Pepper
played the piano for the Hymn
Sing. This was in place of the regu-
lar church service, but was just as
inspiring as residents sang the old
familiar songs.
The Men's Choir from Exeter
Christian Reformed Church enter-
tained on Thursday evening. The
voices were a pleasure to hear, as
they sang in perfect harmony.
And...because the first Hot Choco-
late Party was such a great success,
Queensway finished off the week
with a second one! More than 30
residents enjoyed a mug of hot
chocolate with whipped cream or
marshmallows.
Area churches
fight hunger
HENSALL February is the
Drive Month for the Huron -
Perth Group of the Canadian
Foodgrains Bank. Drought, war,
famine, and poverty continue to
create extreme hunger and
hardship all across the eastern
and southern parts of the
African continent. The churches
and other groups of Huron and
Perth counties are responding.
Last year over 20 groups and
congregations representing the
various religious denominations
and special interest groups of
the Huron -Perth area raised over
$28,000.00 for the C.F.G.B. The
organizers of this February's
Drive hope to meet or exceed
that figures as more
congregations and groups join
in the effort to support those
that are not as fortunate as
ourselves. The C.F.G.B. works
on as {o -Church aid basis
rathean on a Government -to -
Government basis. This allows
the churches to monitor grain
shipments from source to
destination. Partner churches
sharing resources also keep
administration costs below three
percent. The Canadian
Government has been so
impressed by the track record of
the Canadian Foodgrains Bank
that is Canadian International
Development Agency
(C.I.D.A.) matches each dollar
raised 4 to 1.
Last year there was
approximately 450 tonnes (18
tractor trailer loads) of corn
shipped from this area. This was
bagged at the Hensall District
Co-operative, trucked to
Hamilton, railed to Montreal,
and then loaded on a ship to
Africa. In addition, there was
two very successful "growing
projects" in this area which will
add much more grain to the
shipments in 1994.
Any churches, or groups, in
Perth and Huron counties
wanting to get involved in the
1994 Drive may contact Perth -
Huron Co-ordincator for the
Canadian Foodgrains Bank,
Don McKercher, R.R. 1,
Dublin, 527-1837. Videos
describing the activities of the
C.F.G.B. are available for loan
from Milton Dietz, R.R. 4,
Seaforth, 522-0608.
Exeter UCW
EXETER - With Alma Langford
president, the meeting of the
afternoon unit of the UCW opened
with repeating the Purpose and
several 'Did You Knows?'
January 24 'will be the
Presbyterial meeting in the church
when Mary Baechler and Leona
Hera will take the registration.
Doris Denham, convener of the
meeting, read 'One Day at a Time'
and Ruth Brock read ' Making
Resolutions - Instead look to' our
Priorities (family)'.
She also read 'Life is Too Short'.
Denham introduced guest speaker
Jean Bennett who last February
went to Africa with the Food Grain
Bank. In 1992, 72,000 metric
tonnes of grain were sent to 22
countries. In 1990 Ethiopia was 80
percent forested and now it is six
percent.
Jane Muegge explains the 'Slice of Huron' programs to mem-
bers of the Hensall Agricultural Society.
HENSALL - The Hensall South
Huron Agricultural Society is con-
sidering making its June fair this
year a one day event rather than
spreading over two days..
But a firm decision was not
reached last Wednesday night.
Instead, a motion was passed giv-
ing the board of directors the go
ahead to make a final decision. And
that decision is expected tonight.
The agriculture society did an-
nounce the theme for the fair this
year - Youth and Agriculture.
And to get some ideas, members
heard a presentation by Jane
Muegge, of the Ontario Ministry
of Agricultural and Food.
Muegge was one of the organiz-
ers last year for the 'Slice.of Huron'
project put on in Seaforth by
OMAF for Grade 4 and 5 students
in the county.
With the help of a video, she
gave society members an overview
of how the program educated chil-
dren about different aspects of
farming.
Muegge said demonstrations
were set up the children explaining
everything from soil erosion to how
a cow is milked.
Although the program was put in
place by OMAF, several groups
cooperated in the week-long exhibi-
tion.
The agriculture society is looking
at setting up a similar hand on dis-
play.
