Exeter's winning streak continues
By Fred Groves

EXETER - There was a little hint
of revenge in the air last Tuesday
night at the South Huron Recrea-
tion Centre.
Down 5-2 nearing the end of the
second period, the Exeter Hawks
battled back to beat the visiting Mt.
Brydges Bulldogs 6-5 in OHA Jun-
ior Development League action.
The win gave the Hawks the sea-
son series in the five games as a
week earlier, the Bulldogs won a
squeaker 5-4.
"It gives us the season series
against them and that was our big
goal in case we have to meet them
in the playoffs." said Hawks' coach
George Pratt.
Following weekend action, the
Hawks have now won four in a row
which they will take against the vis-
iting Lambeth Lancers Friday night
at 8:30 p.m.
In the five games against the
Bulldogs, the Hawks have won 6-5,
6-5 and 8-5 while the Bulldogs
came out on' top 6-5 and 5-4, all
very close games.
Shayne Robinson, who scored
three goals and added two more as-
sists for the locals, went in on Mt.
Brydges goalie Darryl Reddy and
scored on a backhander just 32 sec-
onds into the game.
But it was tied 1-1 after 20 min-
utes as Hawks' captain Dave Dai -
Junior 'I)' Hockey
rymple handed the puck over and
Paul Hendricks beat Chris Lyndon.
Throughout the game, the Exeter
defensemen had their problems
moving the puck up the ice.
"We've been working a little on
reminding the defense not to hang
on to it too long," said Pratt. "It's
taking a little longer than I expect-
ed for them to get out Of a had hab-
it."
Although the Hawks played well
in the first period, and the score
was knotted at one all, at the break,
Pratt let his team know he was not
happy with• what he saw.
"I had a big talk with them about
the importance of this game and
they didn't show me that they
cared."
The visitgrs went up in the sec-
ond period and after it was 3-1
Lyndon injured his shoulder and
was replaced by Kirk Durand.

HaWks want to bang
on to fourth place
EXETER - While all but one of the nine teams in the OHA Junior De-
velopment League west 'division make the playoffs, and post -season is a
while in the wings, Friday's game in Exeter is a big one.
At 8:30 p.m. when the puck is dropped at the South Huron Recreation
Centre, the Exeter Hawks will try to hang on to fourth place.
Both the Hawks and the hosts for the night, the Lambeth Lancers have
been trying to permanently secure that spot behind Mitchell, Lucan and
Mt. Brydges.
In the opening game between these two teams back on October 24, the
Hawks easily won 7-1 despite having six players. including leading scorers
Shayne Robinson and Sean McCann ejected for fighting.
However, the last two games have seen the Lancers win 7-2 and more
recently 4-3. With -12 games remaining in the regular season, Robinson is
trying to close in on the 100 -point mark as he now has 85 on 37 goals and
48 assists.

DANNY GALLIVAN (MY FRIEND)
DANNY GALLIVAN, the greatest hockey broadcaster has been
silenced. DANNY died' in his sleep last year at the age of 75. His
beautiful voice just sounded like hockey. It's strange, but when
DANNY was ordering breakfast, it sounded like a hockey game. A
slapshot to DANNY was a candonating shot, a great save was a
scintillating save, or it was made in larcenous fashion. (I never did
ask DANNY what that meant). Dipsy doodling gingerly down the
ice, when SERGE SAVARD would whirl around at the blue line,
DANNY called it a SAVARDIAN SPINNERAMA.
DICK IRVIN told me the story of a college professor writing
DANNY and sayinf"you are wrong, there is no such word as can -
donating", and DANNY wrote back and said "there is now."
I remember an terrible hockey game between the Habs and COL-
ORADO and between the 2 td ai►d 3rd period DANNY asked me
what I thought of the game so far. Well, as usual back in those days
it was a brutal game, both ieains were lousy, so I answered, "DAN-
NY there is no stars in the game, the -only star I see is the zamboni
driver." DANNY answered, "Yes, MR. CIRjtY, this game is like
a hobo's coat, SHABBY!" It is the one and only time DANNY ever
received a letter reprimanding him for doing a bad job from the. TV
station, and it had to be with me.
DANNY was with the great CANADIEN teams since 1952, and
called almost 2,000 games with his buddy DICK IRVIN, MILT
DUNNELL, the writer from the Toronto Star reports RED STO-
REY, DANNY'S best friend said, "This must sound terrible, but it
couldn't have happene$to a tfttcr guy." My buddy RED FISHER
said, "That is not a terrible way of putting it, you've got it right."
DANNY had just returned from golf in FLORIDA, his resignation
as chairman of the HOCKEY HALL OF FAME players selection
committee had been tendered and he made sure his nomination for
GUY LAPOINTE for HALL OF FAME had been registered.
Then he quietly went to sleep. That's the kind of guy Danny was.
What better way to go?
DANNY was the last of the original members of the player selec-
tion committee for the HOCKEY HALL OF FAME who was still
active. He had been chairmen since the
death of FRANK SELKE, but was hop-
ing to resign this lune.
DANNY was never a homer for the
HABS, in fact he never went into the
HABS dressing room and he never hung
around the players. I remember he used
to come to the game about 7 o'clock for
an eight o'clock game, he would study
the players in warm-up. 1 can still see
him intently studying the players from
THE GONDOLA, smoking with his
cigarette holder. He was a sight to be hold.
. Two things bothered DANNY about hockey, and one was the ic-
ing of the puck. He felt it slowed the game down and you should not
be allowed to ice the puck with penalties. He was also not to crazy
about fights. But the thing that really bothered him was the organ in
THE FORUM. He said that shouldn't be allowed in d shrine like
THE FORUM.

ones on him and the Hawks were
starring down the barrel of a three -
goal deficit.
But with two seconds left in the
middle frame, Robinson got his
second to send the hosts into the
dressing room with a little confi-
dence.
•
"That goal with two seconds left
in the second period was the
biggest goal of the night," said
Pratt.
In the third, Robinson netted his
33rd of the season before Nathan
Burns pulled the hosts closer. The
tying goal came when Greg Dal-
rymple scored from the point. The
winner came with 9:14 left to play
as again Greg Dalrymple shot from
the blueline but this time Dan Ryan
deflected it. -
Hawks 5, Pests 2
Friday night in Exeter, the Hawks
trailed 1-0 after the first period and
were down 2-1 after 40 minutes.
In the third, the hosts exploded
for four goals to win the game.
Scoring for the winners were Rob-
inson with three goals, Nathan
Burns and Steve Farquhar. Sean
McCann had three assists.

In Sunday afternoon's game, Sean
McCann had a big five -point effort
with a goal and four set ups. Also
scoring were Robinson with his

Beat Pests in overtime
Irish come up. short
against league leaders

LUCAN - Although the playoffs
in the OHA Junior Development
League are a few mdre weeks
away, last Wednesday night's game
in Lucan had all the makings of
post -season play.
There was good goaltending, lots
of hard hitting and even a few dra-
matic moments.
It was fitting that the defending
provincial champions, the Mitchell
Hawks wire one of the teams play-
ing butAfiuch to the disappointment
of the host Lucan Irish, the Hawks
w a squeaker 4-3.
Iaturday night the Irish travelled
jd Belmont where they came away
with a slim 6-4 overtime win over
the slumping Pests. That win lifted
Lucan's record to 18-7-2.
Throughout the first and second
period against -the Hawks, the Irish
clearly dominated physically and
finished .their checks more so than
they have all season.
But in the third, the visitors
came -from -behind, attacked the
Irish zone with a great deal of con-
fidence and won the game. Lucan
coach Ken Needham said his team
should be able to play a physical 60
minutes.
"They shouldn't -be tired at this
point of the season. We haven't had
a Tough schedule or games hack -to -
back."
in the first period, veteran wing-
ers Steve Matthews and Jeremy Je-
mcc, both sporting /unior 'B' expe-
rience, let the Hawks know early it
was going to be a physical g$me as
they really threw their weight
around.
But in the second, Jemec was
ejected for fighting which seemed
to take some sting out of the punch
although Needham did not agree.
"When Mitchell started hitting
we hit back and then Mitchell
hacked off,"said Needham.
Although he allowed four goals,
Lucan netminder Steve Watson
played one of his best games of the
season as he faced the best offen-
sive team in the west division.
"He played well, you can't blame
him at all. He made some key saves
especially in the first period," said
Needham.
Shorthanded: Early in the game,
Lucan's Greg DePrest stole the
puck and on a shorthanded situa-
tion, went in on Darcy Ballantyne
and although DePrest was stopped,
Dwayne Price banged in the re-
bound.
Bu the Hawks quickly went
. ahea by a goal and sent the hosts
into the first break down by one.
Josh Lambourn tied it at one and a
Jarrett Keller shot which went off a
shoulder and past Watson made it
2-1.
In the second. Irish defensemen
Keith Robson made it 2-2 on a shot
from the point which was going
over t e net until Ballantyne
reach up for it and then the puck
spurted out of his glove and fell
into the net behind him.
"If you don't shoot the puck, it
won't go in," said Needham of Rob -
son's goal.
DePrest put the Irish ahead on a
backhander on a play which
showed a lot of second effort as he
was knocked down in front of the
Mitchell net, got up, and scored.
With 3:56 left in the game Greg
VanBakel tricked one past Watson
to tie it and 51 seconds later Kory
Dietz redirected a shot to win the
game.
Late in the second period, for-
ward Rob Davis injured hisright
leg which meant Needham had to
do some line juggling. He put Steve
Moore with Price and DePrest bdt
it didn't work in the third.
"He's (Moore) not ready xet to
play but he won't get ready with
one practice a week so we have to
play him to get him in shape."
Moore, Lucan's second leading
scorer a year ago has missed sever-
al games this year and is working
on regaining his scoring touch.
Irish 6, Pests 4
'Lucan's 18th win of the season
came Saturday in Belmont where
DePrest had -two goals including an
empty-netter and an assist.
Also scoring were defensemen
Dave Mancari, Andy Ross and
Mike Robb. Watson went the dis-
tance in net and had an assist.

Facilities
Warm room on hold,
EXETER - Although thc plans have been in the works since October
1992, there is still no indication when the warm room at the arena of
thc South Huron Recreation Centre will be built.
The project, an undertaking by the local recreation board, is waiting
for Doug Geoffrey Construction to begin the job.
The local company has said f6r a couple of years now that it would
be willing to donate the labour while committee members are banking
on donated materials.
"This warm room has been talked.ahout for three years," said rec di-
rector Lynne Farquhar.
The hoard has gone as far as it can, they've had plans drawn up and
they've toured other facilities to see just what it is they want for Exet-
•
er.
When completed, the warm room will be located at the south end of--
the
f"the arena where the wheelchair accessible area is now.
Over a month ago the board sent a letter to Geoffrey asking him
when work on the warm room would begin.
"What we want to know is when it's going to happen," said Farqu-
har. "We're feeling like we can't push him but we want to get irgoiitg."
Farquhar noted that the board is in a bit of an awkward position be-
cause Geoffrey is volunteering the labour and they do appreciate his
contribution
--
Geoffrey said his company has been extremely busy and hopes to be-
gin the warm room in the spring.
"It won't be this winter. It's tough to do when there's hockey going
on," he said. \
He also noted that there was some hold up with the building inspec-
tor approving the plans.
Expansion proposed for
Stephen Township Arena
CREDiTON - Stephen Township council arc assembling a hood to
examine the possible expansion of the arena in Huron Park.
Arena manager Frank Funston attended township council January 4
to recommend that council consider expanding the facility to include
larger dressing rooms, a hall, a warm viewing area, and an equipment
sales area.
Council asked Funston to put together a firm cost estimate proposal
with administrator Larry Brown so that a grant application can be
made to either the provincial or federal government.
Council also agreed to resurrect the Stephen Township Arena Board,
which will not only direct the activities of the arena, but also with a
view to plan the proposed expansion.
Any township residents interested in sitting on the hoard should ap-
ply to council before January 31.
