Steve Moore scored the tieing goal for the Irish as Exeter had a penalty and Lucan put another attacker on the ice. • There was lots of celebration.asthe Zurich Tykes won the 'W title of the Stephen Township Tournament. 13 - Doug Ellison, a former teacher at South Huron District High School recalled his days as a wrestling coach. • At the OHA Junior Development League All-star game, Hawks' Sean McCann fired three goals and set up two more and was named the MVP. 20 - Exeter's favourite hockey son, Dave Shaw of the Boston Bruins' was set to play in his 500th NHL game. • Wayne Cole had two goals to pace the Exeter Broncos to the consola- tion tide of the Seaforth Atom Hockey Tournament. April A look bac cheers and the tears f, 11TflhxziZ7 .txrzir ZZzxzzxxi1YrrXZXZXYtTX*! 2 - Following its annual general meeting,' the Exeter Junior 'D' Hawks appeared to be in trouble as they had few people willing to step in and fill the executive positions. • Pitcher Steve Cook gave up just five hits to help the Exeter imperials to a 5-4 South Perth Men's Fastball League win over Tavistock. 9 - The SHDHS Panthers held their annual awards banquet and taking home top honours were Bryan McAllister, Ryan Swart, Stacey Rader and Helen Theophilopoulos. • Tae -Kwon -Do Olympic silver medalist Marcie King of London came .aro Exeter to help present local martial arts students with their new belts. '16 - Then Toronto Maple Leaf forward Dave McLtwain was at the 12th Annual Dane Scatchered golf tournament and said the Leafs brought a lot of excitement to hockey fans. • Local golfer Dave Holtzmann set a new course record on the back nine at Ironwood as he shot an incredible 30. He parred the 10t11, 11th and 12th holes and birdied the 13th. 23 - After a couple of weeks of questionable survival, the Exeter Junior 'D' Hawks said they had a renewal of interest, enough to have a supportive and committed executive. • Storms rolled in but that didn't matter to the 27 boats who participated in the annual Grand Bend 1(X) Yacht Race which had several different classes. 30 Senior citizens from Grand Bend were pleased to find out they were re- ceiving properly from the village to construct new shuffleboard courts. 7 - Organizers Ray and June Hodgson of Exeter were in the midst of or- ganizing the Exeter Senior Games which was to be the local qualifying event for the Tri -County Games. • After a lengthy deliberation, the OMHA stated that the juvenile hockey series between the Hensel! Mustangs and Ennismore would continue. 14 - Teacher Gerry Ward, on exchange from New Zealand was introduc- ing the sport of rugby to South Huron District High School students. • Elsie Swan of Eager returned from the International Special Olympics in Austria where she won a silver medal in figure skating. 21 - South Huron high school cleaned up at the Huron -Perth badminton championships, winning both the senior girls doubles (Candace Miller and Chrissy Morgan) and the senior boys doubles (Jason Coolman and Ryan,, Stuart) titles. • The Lucan Irish lost the sixth. game of the Junior 'D' west division fi- nals and were eliminated by Mitchell. It was the first time in five years the Irish failed to make the provincial finals. 28 - At the annual Exeter Minor Hockey Association meeting, there was talk of the Shamrock League expanding, which in the fall, it did to include a tier two division. • Among the top award winners for the Exeter Hawks for the 1992-93 season were Dave Dalrymple, Clint McCann, Sean McCann and Larry Lewis. ! t (f. 5 - The SHAHS Panthers tied two games and won another but did not advance past pool play in their own senior boys soccer tournament. • Exeter resident Jim Hughes was trying to get local seniors involved in the popular game of sl>' -pitch. He, plays a lot in the winter in Florida. • Marty Debruyn, one of.the.many fine young soccer players in this area was named one of four achievement award winnersat the London Youth Soccer Club's annual banquet. 12 - Dave Bogart, an Exeter native, completed his second year as coach of the Woodstock Junior 'C' Navy Vets with an incredible 29-2-5 record. • Tillsonburg White Sox won all three of the games they played to t+t}in the Exeter Junior Baseball mini tournament. It took a come-from-1a>a d win to beat the hosts. 19 - At the Huron -Perth high school track and field championships It Goderich, Chad Gilfillan of SHDHS won the 100 metres and the Panthers managed to send' 15 athletes to WOSSA. • It was the first year for the Exeter Fury of the Western Ontario Soccer League and it Was ll eart.DOsuyn netting two goals in the team's first ever victory. 26 • The winning fish of the Grand Bend Salmon and Trout Derby was caught by Reid Robertson who, with the same fish won the Bluewater Sher- nia Salmon Derby. Below Matt McKee of Varna slides _safely past Centralia's Jay Squires in one of many ball tour- naments this year. 4 - The Tillsonburg Red Sox dashed any hopes the Exeter Express had for playoTf survival as theycameto town and beat the locals in senior base- ball action. • Brenyn Baynham of Exeter returned from the under -18 national field hockey championships•with asilver medal. 11 - Derek and Dan Masse of Dashwood had just received baseball scholarships to Northeastern Oaklahoma College. • George Shaw of Exeter reflected back on his professional hockey ca- reer. He realized, in the 1930's and 40's it was more profitable to play in the Quebec Senior League than in the NHL. 18 - A bewildered 400 people watched several wrestling matches at the South Hruon Recreation Centre. In charge of the show was Phil Watson, son of the great Whipper Billy Watson. • John Marshall of Lucan was all set to head to Denmark and represent Canada at the International Amateur Sport Karate Association champion- ships. 25 - Exeter native Tina Campbell returned from British Columbia where she won a silver medal at the Canada Games. She was on the women's un- der -21 field hockey team. • Over $2,000 was raised as the Grand Bend OPP played an exhibition hockey game with a team of NHLer's at the Stephen Township Arena. September 1 - Tracy Putherbough, the top female jet ski rider in Canada was in Grand Bend for races which attracted dozens of racers. She announced she would be retiring at the end of the year. • Andrew Geiger of Zurich returned from Texas where the American Junior Quarter Horse Association championships were held. He and his horse Final Cheque finished in the top 15 out of 60 riders. 8 - Exeter was the site of Ontario Baseball Association Rookie Senior 'B' tournament which was won by Georgina as they beat Georgetown 8-6. • After 22 years,, Lucan Irish president Clare Stanley decided to step down and give the job to someone else. 15 - Members of the Dashwood Stars, a ladies fastball team which played in. the 1940's and 50's gathered for a reunion in Grand Bend to re- flect on their days on the diamonds. 22 - The Exeter Hawks skated to a big 8-1 win over the Seaforth Centen- naires in OHA Junior Development League pre -season hockey action. 29— The Exeter Fury capped off a great season, their first, with a 10-8 record in the Western Ontario Soccer League. f3c!ober 7 - Fingal edged St. Marys 1-0 to win the annual Exeter Imperials Men's Fastball Tournament. • Shawn and Allan McFalls of the Exeter Lawn BowlingClub travelled to Quebec where they brought home a silver, medal from the Canadian Junior Lawn Bowling championships. 14 - Catcher Gavin Snell blasted a triple to help the Exeter Imperials to . ; xhhcir second straight South Perth Men's Fastball League win. • Although there were only 20 participants the week long soccer camp .,hosted by the Exeter Centennials Soccer Association it was a fun -filled adlime for those who did learn new skills. 21 - Bob Mason of die Exeter Golf Course had his hands full with doz- ens of children who were learning the Cuter points of the game. • The: 1993 swim season got off to a strong start for the Exeter Barracu- rias as they travelled to Clinton end brought home. many. fust place finish- 28 - Dale Gibbon. an Exeter Mohawks' forward fale,past eight years, ;Acid goodbye to the sown as he moved to, • Jack Parsons was featured in the Ti atttlk # the horde trainer who was one of the Masons Staying Together was breaking records on the track. 6 - The Goderich Vikings came to town and managed to win all three games against South ?Huron in girls high school basketball action. • Exeter Hawks rookie goaltender Chris Lyndon opened the Junior 'D' season with a big 7-0 shutout win over•the North Middlesex Stars. 13 - After several years of hard work, Exeter native Jeff Balsdon re- ceived his black belt in lcaralc. • Dave Shaw of.the NHLs Boston Bruins, and an Exeter native, had his, No. 34 jersey displayed high above tite.ice in Exetcr.oy,.t 4 . 20 - Darren Neil of the. Exeter,lmperials was nattatad4ite4nam's Mostt Valuable Player at the annual South Perth Men's Fastball League banquet. • A Stacey Thurman: three-point shot gave the SHDHS senior girls bas- ketball team a 34-26 wir nver visiting Madill Mustangs. 27 - Brenyn Baynharn, Lynn Workman and Lisa Forrest were all smiles as they helped the SHDHS girls field hockey team to its 12th Huron -Perth Conference title. •:Bob Ross was named the MVP as Denfield beat Southwest Tractor to win the 'A' division of the Stephen Minor Hockey Association Oldtimers- tourrtament. • Former professional hockey goalie Chris Pusey was playing defense' for the Oshweken River Hawks of the Senior 'A' Hockey League. A o vember 3 - With a 3-0 win over North Middlesex, the SHDHS girls field hockey team won the WOSSA title once again. • Team Ontario's ringette team, with Hensall's Cara Gardner played an exhibition game to a large crowd in Exeter. • Despite running their undefeated record to 6-0-1 the Lucan Irish had a tough time winning 3-2 against Belmont. 10 - Perhaps the biggest sports story of the year: CHAMPIONS AGAIN - The Panthers won their second straight OFSAA girls field hockey title this time they did it in Exeter. • Dorchester won the Zurich Minor Hockey Association's bantam tour- nament as they beat Drayton 6-1. • In pre -season high school hockey action, South Huron easily beat visit- ing St. Marys 8-3. 17 - The dime division Exeter Minor Hockey Association tournament saw the host Atoms win the 'A' tide while Stephen Township took the nov- ice. • The SHDHS senior boys volleyball team beat rival Strafford Central Rams to win the Huron -Perth Conference title. 24 - With a little revenge in mind, Exeter Belles won the Exeter and Area Ringeue Association tournament. • Shaync Robinson had four goals to lift the Exeter Hawks to a big 9-7 win over the host Lucan Irish in Junior 'I)' action. • Tile SHDHS senior boys volleyball team got as far as the semi-finals at WOSSA only to be beaten by Stratford Central. December 1 - The Toronto NHL Oldtimers, featuring such stars as Paul Henderson and Jack Valiqueue played an exhibition game with the Exeter Mohawks. • Hot -shooting Dwayne McNab helped the SHDHS junior boys basket- ball team to the consolation title of their own tournament. • Exeter Curling Club had its season underway as it hosted the Post Har- vest Bonspiel. 8 - In one of their biggest wins ewer, the Exeter Mohawks demolished the visiting Dunnville Mudcats 11-2. • Boxer.Joe Kaak of Shipka, once again had to finish for second at the national championships as he was beaten again by Craig Brown. • At the senior basketball tournament in Exeter, the host Panthers were knocked off by the North Middlesex Marauders. 15 - Several players from the Exeter Centennials men's soccer team were competing the Western Ontario Indoor Soccer League. • 'The Sffphen Township atoms won the Regional Silver Stick tourna- ment in Wingltatn as they had only eight goals against them in five games. • Jared Bourne scored in overtime to lift the Exeter Atom Broncos to the championship of the Mt Brydges hockey tournainent. 22 - North Middlesex Stars' goalie Andy (flavin made 39 saves as they battled the Exeter.Hawks to a 2-2 Junior D' Ne.. • Following an agreement with the Ontario Minor Hockey Association it was decided local associations would have to pay an additional seven dol- lars. • Despite taugh economic limes, snowmobiling is still a very popular ac- tivity. -1,
