•550 people attended a rally,
dubbed the "Friends of Central-
ia" in a bid to show support for
keeping Centralia College open.
Presentations at the meeting em-
phasized the value of the college
to Huron and Middlesex
Counties and the services it of-
fers the agricultural community.
•Exeter's oldest car dealership,
Rayne Chev-Olds closed its
doors. While owners expressed
hope that a new owner could be
found to keep the business alive,
none emerged. About 10 people
lost their jobs in the service de-
partment alone.
•Grand Bend council issued a let-
ter to be sent to local school
boards, including London, cau-
tioning students to behave while
visiting the resort during the
summer months.
- Exeter council was fuming that
they would have to purchase a
$16,000 metal liner for trench
digging in town, but would be
unable to rent the device to other
local municipalities, which
would have to purchase their
own. The province later clari-
fied its regulations for trench lin-
ers, allowing their shared use.

• Staff at the Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority agreed
to a six -percent cut in pay. This
was triggered by another round
of provincial funding cuts to
Conservation Authorities, and
did not include the cutbacks to
be imposed by the Social Con -

•An Ontario Civilian Commission
on Police Services hearing be-
gan in Exeter to discover the
source of a dispute between the
town's police services board and
police chief Jack Harkness.
Harkness had been fired by the
board September 1992, and later
brought back to duty.
•Exeter town council members at-
tended the funeral of councilor
Tom Humphreys, who died of a
heart illness May 5. Hum-
phreys, of whom mayor Bruce
Shaw said would be missed at
council, was replaced at the
council table later in the year by
Bert Branderhorst.
•The Huron -Bruce Liberal Riding
Association was holding its
nomination meeting in prepara-
tion for a fall election. On the
ballot were prospective candi-
dates Paul Steckle, Margaret
Mclnmy, and Rev. Rick Magee.

•After hearing testimony from
only two witnesses, the ,Ontario
Civilian Commission on Police
Services adjourned its hearing
into the police services board
and the chief. The reason given
was that the likely transition for
Exeter frommturicipal police
force to a contract with the OPP
made the dispute a moot point.
Mayor Bruce Shaw and police
board chairman John Stephens
were the only two to testify and
both described the board's con-
flicts with the chief.

•The high school also opened its
doors for "Science West" a large
science fair designed to inspire
interest in scientific studies and
endeavors amongst high school
and elementary students.

•In the aftermath of the Victoria
Day weekend, Grand Bend
council members were touting
the event as a peaceful weekend
at the Lakeshore community.
However, police reports suggest-
ed the politicians were express-
ing more wishful thinking than
reality. Numerous fights, prop-
erty damage, and arson were all
pan of the long weekend festivi-
ties.
•On its way to Grand Bend, the
Exeter train station was lifted off
its foundations where it had sat
since it was built in 1911. The
station was purchased by optom-
• etrist Dr. Anne Wilson, who is
renovating it to become a new
office for her practice.
•A Lucan v.'oman won $2.3 mil-
lion in a Lotto 649 draw. Marie
Sockett checked the numbers af-
ter her shift at Craigweil Gar-
dens, and said she couldn't be-
lieve her luck.
•Paul Steckle won the nomination
to represent the Liberal Party for
Huron -Bruce in the upcoming
federal election.
Decorating contest winners

HENSALL - The Christmas Eve
Candle Light service at Carmel
Presbyterian Church was - well at-
tended. Dorothy Taylor was organ-
ist for the evening. Rev. Mark Ga-
skin conducted a service of
scripture readings and carol singing
with the assistance of Kathy Ga-
skin. Once again, Harry and Donna
Smith helped Santa by preparing
`treats for the children, which Harry
distributed to the eager recipients.
Due to weather conditions, Sun-
day service was cancelled, at Car-
mel Presbyterian.
Rev. Henry Armen, conducted
the Christmas Eve service at Hen-
sall United Church, choosing for
his message, "God in a Baby". The
choir contributed two anthems, to
the service, and were joined by the
Junior Chou for the singing of
"Ring Out the Bells". Communion
was served. During the taking of
the offering, Kim Taylor sang a
solo. Many Christmas hymns were
sung during the evening. A large
crowd attended this impressive ser-
vice.
The winners of Hensall's Christ-
mas decorating contest were re-
cently chosen. In the home catego-
ry the winners were: first place,
John and Jan Baker, 2nd place, Jim
and Mary Lou Hyde; 3rd place,
Wayne- and Linda Reid. In the
apartment category the winners
were: lst place, Ralph and Peggy
Mathonia; 2nd place, Murray and
Greta Baker, 3rd place, Babe
McGregor.
In the business division, the win-
ners were: lst place, William's Hair
Styling; 2nd place, Ron's Health
Centre; 3rd place, Drysdale's Ap-
pliance Centre.

automatically entitled to new, enhanced accident benefits from your

Turnout high for Sunday
School Christmas concert

THAMES ROAD - Last Monday
evening the Sunday School Christ-
mas Concert was well attended.
Karen Etherington, Sunday School
superintendent, welcomed every-
one to the program which started
with piano solos by Kristy Bray,
who played "0 Christmas Tree"
and "The First Nowell"; Robyn
Etherington who played "Good
King Wenceslas" and "The Chip-
munk Song"; piano duets by Laura
Miller and Vanessa Bray who
played "Good King Wencestas"
and "Up on the Housetop"; and
Amy and Ann Marie Hodgert
played "Jingle Bells" on their re-
corders.
Megan Parker and Maggie Miller
did a line dance to the music
"Grandma Got Run Over by a
Reindeer" and Erin Parker played
"Over the River and Through the
Woods" on the piano.
A Christmas drama "Las Posa-
dos" was given with narrator Erin
Parker, readers Laura Miller and
Ryan Parker; innkeepers Maggie
Miller and Megan Parker; rich peo-
ple Lori Richardson, Vanessa Bray,
Amy Hodgert and Derek Ethering-
ton; Joseph, David Vandenbussche;
Mary, Robyn Etherington.
Jessica Bray, a talented beginner,
did a stepdance and piano solos
were given by Sara Miller, "Good
King Wenceslas" and "Up on the
Housetop; Brenda Miner, "The
First Nowell"; and Megan Parker,
"Up on the Housetop".
Lori Richardson did a "Clog, Jig,
and a Reel" and "Old Time Reel".
The finale trio was Vanessa Bray,
Erin Parker and Laura Miller who
played "We Wish You a Merry
Christmas".
Santa Claus arrived and came in
to the singing of "Santa Claus is
Coming to Town" and many gifts
were distributed.
Christmas Eve Communion
service
Rev. Jim Allsop was in charge of
the joint Christmas Eve Commun-
ion service.
Everyone joined in the Respon-
sirve Reading. The choirs sang two
anthems "The Song of the Angels"
and "As Lately We Watch" accom-
panied by the organist. The Christ
candle was lit by Judith Parker,
Erin and Megan and they gave in-
formation about it. The Christmas
Story was read responsively.
The title of Rev. Allsop's sermon
was "A Love for All Seasons".
The Creed was read in unison.
The Communion service was then
conducted by Rev. Allsop and
some of the elders with everyone
going to the front of the church to
take communion which brought an
impressive service to a close, also
by the singing of "0 Holy Night".
Rev. Jun Allsop conducted the
church service on Sunday morning.
The Responsive Reading was
"The Whole Creation Praises God"
taken from the Green Service
Book.
The children's hymn "Magic Pea-
ny"was sung. There was no chil-
dren's story as there were only 12
adults that attended church down-
stairs.
Don Bray read the Scripture Les-
sons Isaiah 61:10.62:3 and Gala-
tians 4:4-7.
Life and work of the church 4.
The January meeting of the Unit-
ed Church Women will be held on
Monday, January 10 at 8 p.m.
