After dropping three OHA Senior 'A' Hockey League games in a row, the Exeter Mohawks scratched out a 4-3 win over the visiting Dor- chester DolphinsaSunday night. It was a very big win for the Mo- hawks at the South Huron Recrea- tion Centre as they not only snapped the slump, but beat the first place team. Following weekend games, the Dolphins lead the seven -team loop with 20 points while Bothwell has 17 and the Mohawks stand at 16. Bothwell managed to stip ahead of Exeter in the standings as they beat the visiting Mohawks on Thursday. Although they managed to cap off the week with a win over the Dolphins, Exeter also fell to the visiting Dunnville Mudcats on Sat- urday night. One reason for the struggling sea- son is lack of a physical game. Fall to Lambeth 5-4 Jamie Esp lsh ...notches fifth of the year "We haven't been aggressive all year," said Mohawks coach Dave Revington. "That's been one of our major problems." Another has been not being able to ice a full team, however that was not the case Sunday against the Dolphins. "This is the first time this year we've had a full bench." As far as being physics/PK con- cerned, it may be a little tough for the locals to do, especially when defensemen Dale TImmermans is battling sore ribs, and big winger Greg Murray was ejected in the second period for checking -from - behind. In the third period, Mohawks' blueliner Jeff McLenaghan was checked -from -behind and was slow getting up after he went hard into the side boards. No penalty was called by referee Dave Marsh and even more surprising, it didn't seem to rev McLcnagahan up. "He's just been playing ret hock- ey, he's preuy rusty. You can't jump into this league and float in and out, you have to be in game shape," said Revington. The hosts looked sharp in the first period as Tim Shields spun around and got the puck to Greg Snyder to make it 1-0 just 49 sec- onds into the game. elainellimminirmromsesmowavom- "This is the first time this year we've hada full bench" It was 3-0 after 20 minutes as Kris Bedard rushed in and blasted one over Jack Nogueira's shoulder and Jamie English moved into the slot untouched to get his fifth of the year. Veteran goalie Rick Pikul had struggled in his last couple of out- ings, especially Saturday against the Mudcats, but he played much better against Dorchester turning away 40 shots. "He has a great deal of self disci- pline," said Revington of his pri- mary puckstopper. "If he has a bad game, he doesn't have to be told." Joe Scherer got the game winner in the second period as he let go with an ice leVelsitot to collect his 12th of the season. Scoring for the visitors were Terry Lyons, Ian Rand with a shorthanded goal and John Cameron. Dunnville/L Exeter 5 Saturday, the host Mohawks were even after both the first and second periods but fell apart in the third. Scoring for Exeter were Shaun Resume, Owen Lessard, McLena- ghan, Todd Broomhead and Jacques Beauliea. It was a disappointing loss since Exeter won 11-2 the last time the Mudcats came to town. Bothwell 7. Exeter 4 Playing in his first game, Lessard fined two goals and set up another' but it wasn't quite enough. Also scoring for the visitors on Thursday were Snyder and Greg Ryan. That will make the locals very strong up the middle with him, Irish split games, remain in second place By Fred Groves T -A staff LUCAN - The Lambeth Lancers are beginning to give hockey teams are real hard time. Last Wednesday night in Lucan, the Lancers scored in the last min- ute of play to take home a slim 5-4 win. Combined with a 9-2 win over host North Middlesex on Saturday, the Irish have a 15-6-2 record in the OHA Junior Development League west division, and are 10 points be- hind front -running Mitchell. Tonight they play host to the struggling Alvinston Flyers at 8:15 p.m. The Irish had a big 3-1 lead after the first period but the Lancers, handing the hosts their sixth loss of the season, came back and tied it 3- 3 after 40 minutes. The score was knotted again, this time at four when, with 53 seconds left in regulation play, Lambeth's Glen MacKinnon snapped one past Steve Watson. Playing four -on -four, Tom Walk- er took a shot which Watson got his pad on but he kicked the rebound to MacKinnon who made no mistake in scoring his second of the night. Those guys have to do a better job clearing the man and tak- ing the puck," said Irish coach Ken Needham. It was 1-0 for the hosts as Rob Davis got his first of two but Lamb- eth _tied it when the Irish had the man advantage and Greg DePrest Asis DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE "1 can worry all I want but if those guys don't want to play, there's nothing I can do about it." coughed up the puck in his own end. DePrest a centre, was lugging the puck and the two defensemen on the ice were in front of him which, after the game puzzled Needham a great deal. 1 asked where they (defense - men) were and they all had an ex - There was no explanations how- ever when Seth Bogart buried a shorthanded goal. Lucan came to life later in the first period when they scored a pair of goals to take a two -goal lead. Travis Stinchcombe went airborne over top of Lambeth goalie Jeff Baldacchino and the puck went into the net. Davis broke away from his chock and slipped into the slot where he let go with a shot. Assisting on the goal was DePrest and Corey Smith. Sm' led up from the Lucan bantam ' t 14 years -old and he was replacing the absent veteran blueliner Ed Vankerkoerle who was working. After the visitors came back and tied it 3-3, it was Smith putting the Irish back - in front with his first goal as a junior. "It was a slapshot from the point and he just one -timed it," said Needham. Lambeth's Kevin Thomas tied the score 4-4 and Lucan's Derek Green- lee came close to giving the hosts the win when he stole the puck and bounced one off the crossbar. With Craig Brown in the box on a retaliation penalty which set him down for five minutes, Lambeth had a long powerplay with less than four minutes'Iefrin thegame. However they were whistled too many men on the ice and the two sides played the final 1:19 with four skaters each. What's ahead?:The holidays usually mark a little more than half way through the regular season and the Irish are definitely not as strong as they've been in the past although they are in a battle for second. True, eight teams make the playoffs and the Irish's 15 wins have already guaranteed them a spot in post -season but this Lucan team is having it's moments of stumbling and bumbling. "I can worry all I want but if those guys don't want to play, there's nothing I can do about it," said Needham. One of the areas the Irish have to stre n is their defense. The blue are struggling and Need- ham is looking to make adjust- ments. "We'll have more defensemen here before the year's over. I don't think it's a problem we'll be con- cerned with at the moment." jljsh.9. Sj 2 Saturday night in Parkhill, the Irish picked up their 15th win of the season. Dwayne Price had three goals while Shawn FairweAther added four big assists. Also scoring were Mike Reid, Jay Jackson. Jeremy Jc- mec, Dave Mancari, Rob Davis and Mike Robb.
