Hawks' slump continues
Will changes to bench find needed spark?
By Adrian Harte

EXETER - The possibility of
changes to the Hawk's lineup
wasn't being ruled out by manage-
ment as the team deepened its
slump on the weekend, posting its
seventh and eighth losses of the
season against Mitchell and Lamb-
eth.
Frustration with the Junior D
Hawks ineffective performance
was evident both on the bench and
in the dressing rooms Friday eve-
ning after they were severely out-
gunned by the visiting Mitchell
Hawks 9-3.
"We were too scrambly," com-
plained coach George Pratt Jr. after
the game. "Our coverage in our
own end was brutal. tonight."
Pratt said the team took a lot of
"unnecessary penalties" in the
game, pointing to discipline prob-
lems on the bench. "I think it was
mostly in frustration."
Indeed, the .team's level of frus-
tration rose while watching Mitch-
ell get four goals on the board be-
fore Exeter's Nathan Burns got the
Hawk's ball rolling with a power
play goal late in the second period.
Mark Livermore and Jon Schiedel
were there to assist.
Shayne Robinson scored the
Hawks second goal early in the
third period, assisted by Jason
McBride and Sean McCann. How-
ever, by the time Greg Dalrymple
scored his first goal of the season,
assisted by Robinson and McCann,
the damage was already done: last
year's Junior D champions were
still ahead by six.
"I've got to hand it to Mitchell,"
said Pratt. "They played a hell of a
good game. They dominated us to-
night," he said, referring to the 36-
18 shots on goal tally, clearly in
Mitchell's favour.
Both teams made frequent visits
to the penalty box. with more than
30 minutes apiece.
He said his team may be experi-
encinn the "mid-season blues" and
remained confident they would
•
eventually bounce back.
"Every team seems to go through
a bit of a slump," he said, but said
the Hawks need some kind of spark
to break the losing streak. Pratt
said he worries the team might be
thinking too much ahead to the
playoffs, without realizing they
need to get there first.
"Our positional play and ' our
physical play are our two weak-
nesses right now," he said, adding
that a video tape made of the game
will be used to point out areas of
improvement.
Pratt even hinted utat a couple of
players may be a little "too com-
fortable" with their positions on the
team. With a couple of cards left to
fill, Pratt said some new talent
might be needed.
"Come playoffs, it's going to be
the guys who are working hard who
are going to be there," he said.
Sunday evening, the Hawks en-
joyed a brief lead over the Lambeth
Lancers after two first period goals
by Shayne Robinson. Still Lamb-
eth replied with two late -period
goals, leaving the first 20 minutes
with a 3-2 score. Lambeth extend-
ed their lead to 4-2 in the second
period before Robinson clinched
his hat -trick with a power play goal
a minute later. With neither team
scoring in the final period; Lambeth
kept their lead, despite a 13-9
shots -on -goal advantage by Exeter.
Penalties in Sunday's game were
fewer too. Exeter racked up only a
12 minute total, Lambeth only six
minutes.
Davis dazzles Stars
By Fred Groves

LUCAN - With the OHA Junior
Development League regular sea-
son schedule reaching the halfway
point, it's interesting lo see who is
contending to be on the Lucan Irish'
number one line.
With veteran centre - and last
year's league's leading scorer Greg
DePrest, along with Steve Moore,
Rob Davis, Dwayne Price and
Shawn Fairweather, it's a tough
choice to pick out the most talented
trio.
Last Wednesday night in Lucan
however, Davis certainly showed
he belongs as he scored four goals
and set up two more in a 6-2 win
over the North Middlesex Stars.
The rookie winger almost had a
fifth, but even though it trickled
over the line was pulled out of the
net at the last minute and not count-
ed.
"It went two inches over the line
but the ref didn't catch it," said Da-
vis who played for Stratford mid-
gets last year.
When asked about continuity on
the number one line, Davis simply
said, "we can all do the job."
Like DePrest and Moore did so
well last year, Davis and DePrest
are the big combination this year.
Moore has been sick and hasn't
seen a lot of ice although he is ex-
pected back in the next week or so.
While Fairweather filled in on
Wednesday, the Lucan Minor
Hockey Association product prob-
ably will be put on a line with
Moore while Price is expected to be
a regular with DePrest and Davis.
"It's not a problem," said Irish as-
sistant coach Jamie Pearce. "I'd
probably say Moore won't be on
that line and it will probably
be Price."
Pearce got his second straight
win behind the bench as he took
over the reins from head coach Ken
Needham who sat out his second
game of a two -game suspension.
Also watching from the stands
was Jeremy Jemec who received a
two -game suspension for an inci-
dent again% Mitchell. Jemec and
Steve Matthews, also not present at
Wednesday's . game would have

Petites win in Mitchell
MITCHELL - It was close, very
close.
Backed by the strong goaltending
of Kelli Fulton, the Exeter Optimist
Petites beat host Mitchell 7-5 to
win the tournament here on Sun-
day.
Offensively, Kerri Fulton scored
two goals and set up three more to
help in the gold medal game. Mag-
gie Steciuk had three goals with
singles to Laura Skinner and Lau-
ryn Baynham. Assisting were Pam
Keys, Sarah Hodge and Ann Marie
Parsons.
Exeter opened the tournament on
Friday with a big 7-3 win over
Mitchell. Kern Fulton fired two
goals and assisted on four others
while Steciuk and Sarah Webber
each had two goals and two assists.
Hodge had a goal and Robyn
Etherington had an assist. -
Steciuk had three goals against
Paris in an 11-0 win while Kerri
Fulton had a goal and three assists.
Webber had two goals and an assist
while Hodge and Parsons both had
a goal and an assist. Keys, Krista
Dayman and Etherington also
scored.
It was 11 more goals this time
against Hanover its an 11-1 win on
Saturday. Etherington was the big
gun with three tallies with two
from Kerri Fulton and one each to
Steciuk, Keys, Baynham, Webber
and Laura Skinner.

...four goals
been a big help against the Stars,
especially in the first period.
Stars' tough in own end: Al-
though the Irish dominated in the
opening 20 minutes, the Stars were
very physical in their own end. De-
Prest slipped one through goalie
Aaron Lucas' legs 53 'seconds into
the game and the only other Irish
score sandwhiched between Stars'
Jamie Campbell's goal was scored
by Fairweather.
But in the middle frame, the Stars
seemed to die down a little and Lu-
cas wasn't as intense between the
pipes.
"Maybe their goalie let up, he
kept them in the first period," said
Pearce.
"They kind of died off but we
started out slow," said Davis.
13y far the best period far the
Irish was the second but Pearce
didn't seem to mind that Lucan only
played a solid 20 minutes instead of
60.
"The first period was very slow
and the second we played a fairly
good period. The third period,1 just
went in and told them I wanted to
get out with a win."
If the Irish had been playing a
team higher in the standings than
the Stars, they might not have won
due to the lack of players. Out were
Moore, Matthews, Jemec, Price,
Scott Riddell and Colin Kowal-
chuk.
Steve Watson picked up another
win in net for the Irish and he made
some big stops. However, he seems
to still have a fundamental flaw of
wandering way out of his net.
That resulted in the second North
Middlesex goal as Watson roamed
out of the cage and put the puck
right on Peter Gallagher's stick.
"Twice during the game I asked a
guy from the bench to go out and
tell him (Watson) to leave the puck
alone," said Pearce.
Wednesday's game was a rough
one at times as big Lucan defense -
man Aaron Moran and Stars' Kevin
Shearon were ejected from the
game and Moran received an addi-
tional four minutes for pulling the
face mask.
That set up a big four -minute
powerplay for the visitors and al-
though they got away four shots
and hit the crossbar, didn't score.

An empty -nester Saturday by the
hosts helped in this one. Scoring
for the Irish were Mike Reid, Price,
Andy Ross and Davis.
