Locals playing indoor soccer to help outdoor game

LONDON - ft's dark and there's
snow on the ground.
The game inside is played with
five aside plus a goalie and there
are two -minute minor penalties.
Sounds like hockey - wrong!
On Sunday nights, members of
the Exeter Centennials senior men's
soccer team make the trip to Lon-
don where they play indoor soccer.
Playing under the name of their
sponsor Huron Tractor, they are
one of six teams in the Second Di-
vision of the Western Ontario In-
door Soccer League.
On this night, Exeter would lose
a 4-1 decision to the night's oppo-
Pat Donnelly right; of Exeter Huron Tractor in a recent
soccer game. On Sunday, Exeter beat the Lightning

ty Centre. Although this facility can

Both victories came in overtime
and both were on goals by forward
Chuck Walker. For his efforts
Walker was named the Player of
-rhe Week and took home a bright
orange T-shirt.
This is the second year Exeter
has put a team in the WOISL, but•
on this particular night, Pat Donnel-
ly, a member of the Centennials for
several years, is playing in just his
second indoor game.
"It seems like you're operating at
a quicker level," said Donnelly of
the indoor version. "You either
control the ball quickly and get rid
indoor of it or you've got two guys on you
3-1 in right off the bat."
The Huron Tractor team plays
accommodate other activities like
squash, volleyball and badminton,
indoor soccer is the big sport here.
To watch this version of soccer
you have to watch carefully be-
cause it is very fast. They play on a
wooden floor : and it's surrounded
by wooden boards.
With eight foot boards around the
ends in which the goals are in, its a
game which allows a player to kick
the ball against the boards, go
around his opponent and continue
down the floor.
"I really enjoy the speed of the
game, it helps with ball control,"
said Centennials coach Dick Lord.
A veteran of nearly 20 years of
Peter Hakvoort chases the ball, left; behind teammate Chuck Walker who was controlling it. At right, Dick Lord keep his eye
on the ball.

outdoor soccer, this is second win-
ter of the indoor game and he and
the other members of the Centenni-
als decided to play in the winter to
help improve their outdoor game.
"It's something different and we
figured it would help. We felt bet-
ter when we came to training
camp."
As already mentioned, this game
has a similarity to hockey in that
not only are there five aside plus a
goalie, but there are penalties called
for rough play and on this night,
one team in the WOISL had a
player receive a four -minute stint in
the penalty box.
When you are the team playing
shorthanded its tough to defend, es-
pecially with only nine minute long
quarters. That's like playing with a
man short for ten minutes in hock-
ey.
The Huron Tractor team is no
stranger to overtime but this type of
extra time has the goalies removed
from the game so the winning goal
comes very quickly.
Besides Lord and Donnelly, the
three other Centennials players'
suiting up for Huron Tractor are Pe-
ter Hakvoort, Walker and Charlie
Wise who has been helping out
with the coaching duties.
Hakvoort noticed that while in-
door soccer can still be physical, it
doesn't get out of hand as much as
outdoor.
"1t can still be rough but its clean-
er because the referee has the abili-
ty to watch it more closely," said
Hakvoort.
The use of the boards makes it a
much more interesting game be-
cause unless you kick the ball over
the the shorter side boards, the
game continues.
"It takes you a while to get used
to the boards but you can use it like
an extra player," he said. "In out-
door soccer you miss the net and
you lose the ball."
Indoor soccer has caught on big
in London and it draws players,
both males and female. It's a sport
which not only keeps those in-
volved physically fit but could, in
the case of the Exeter Centennials,
prepare them for the outdoor sea-
son.
