New garbage
surcharge in
Grand Bend
GRAND BEND -Village council
is taking garbage seriously in
Grand Bend.
Monday night, it passed a new
surcharge on it's residential and
commercial property owners in an
attempt to re -confirm Grand Bend's
commitment to recycling and com-
posting.
Residential owners will now
have to pay a $50 surcharge in
which, for that fee, they will be
given 25 bag tags. Commercial
owners wilt have to pay a sur-
charge of $70 and for that they get
35 tags.
"The one thing its doing is mak-
ing sure we're pulling everyone
into the system," said Grand Bend
councillor Phil Maguire.
The bag -tag system initiated a
year ago, requires owners w put a
tag around their garbage bag or it
won't be picked up. The tags usual-
ly cost $2 each.
"The landlords will have them
and hopefully hell give them out,"
said councillor Bill Uniac.

Christmas

HENSALL - When village reeve
Cecil -Pepper asked about the state
of.Hensall's Christmas.decorations,
he got some bad news Monday eve-
ning.
"Some of them are good, some of
than are getting in really bad
shape," reported works superinten-
dent John Baker.
The village's newest decorations
it puts on display each year are
about five years old, said Baker,
and,said they were among the
worst
"The oldest ones we have are the
s with t owe4ight bulbs,
re in about the best shape,
he said.
When Baker asked if council was
interested in starting a program to
replace them, clerk Luanne Phair
noted that the village BIA has set
about $2,500 aside for replace-
ments.
Baker said one of his main con-
cern is to get decorations that can
be easily repaired, particularly
since they cost about $600 each.
"One night I came down here and
found three good sized boys just
peppering them with snowballs,"
said Baker, saying few stand up to
such abuse.
Councillor Dick Peckham said
the request could be brought to the
next BIA meeting for discussion as
to what decorations to buy and
what time of year was best to make
the purchase.
Board facing 1993 deficit
Separate Catholic
plot at cemetery
back on agenda
EXETER - An area may yet
be set aside for Roman Catholic
burials at the Exeter Cemetery.
Makjag no .mention of .the
t te'•if t,.subject trig-
gered in September 1990, coun-
cil considered the cemetery
board's proposal for a separate
Catholic area at the Exeter ce-
metery rather quietly last Mon-
day evening.
However, circumstances have
changed in the past three years.
Since the cemetery now has
room to expand there is land for
a separate Catholic plot without
depriving other town residents
of plots. The Mt. Carmel
Church is now considering pur-
chasing the land from the ceme-
tery board, rather than simply
having it set aside for Catholic
burials; and the cemetery board
is looking at ending 1993 in a
deficit situation.
Councillor Ben Hoogenboom
said the new priest at Mt. Car-
mel Church is aware of the old
request put before council in
1990, and is aware. such. O i -'I
sion r3Df1I take someltitno. i.
Clerk Liz Bell pointed out that'.
the church is also considering
using the former St. Peters
Church property on Highway 4
near Centralia as a cemetery.
In 1990 the reason given to
council for a separate Catholic
section of the cemetery was that
the land could be blessed as a
unit, rather than each individual
grave site.
Councillor Bert Branderhorst
confirmed that the cemetery
board will likely finish up its
year in a deficit. Sales of burial
plots did not meet budget expec-
tations, and interest income is
down. Funds will be taken from
the Expansion Reserve for this
one year only.

Thursday last week. Santa Claus, played by Vanessa Laye above, is divert-
ed from his seasonal duties by a hostile takeover planned for the toyshop.
Elves (upper left) were played by Amber Oakes, Julie Darling, Jaclyn Bayn-
ham, and Jenni DeBlock. Wednesday's performance was presented to all
the other students and guests (lower left), who were enthralled with the
story and music.

Simmons said the company dis-
