Christmas party hid
By Roberta Walker
GRAND BEND - The Catholic
Women's League of Immaculate
Heart of Mary Parish in Grand
Bend held their monthly meeting
and Christmas party last Wednes-
day.
It was followed by a special Mass
honouring the Feast of the Immacu-
late Conception of Mary, a short
business meeting was held, with
president Lia Vandenberk presid-
ing.
The treasurer, Riek Vander-
burght, announced that the annual
collection of grocery tapes earned
the C.W.L. over $600, received
from the Tenderspot and the I.G.A.
(former LOEB). Many thanks to
Dina Kelders, who collects and tab-
ulates the results.
Lia Vandenberk thanked all the
members who helped to make the
potluck supper so successful -
members of other C.W.L. councils
have inquired if we might consider
making it an annual event? Thanks
also went to those members who
served at the Alhambra Cash; Draw
Dance, and catered lunch to the
Priest's Deanery meeting, ghaired
by Bishop John Sherlock. Toys,
gifts and food items have been col-
lected during Masses for the last
two wedkends, to be picked up by
the Grand Bend Lioness for Christ-
mas Baskets.
Josie Brittain is in charge of the
collection. Toni Vandenberk is tak-
ing care of the Christmas baskets
for :the parish - about a dozen will
be distributed. Roberta Walker will
be' providing a musical offering for
:the Christmas Ecumenical at
Greenway United Church on De-
cember 'Met 7:30 p.m.
:For the next three -Wednesday
:mornings, December 15, 22, 29, the
-:CWL .members will help Father
Beck with coffee and refreshments
after the 10 a.m. Mass.
This is an opportunity for parish-
ioners who may be lonely or sick or
isolated, to visit with their pastor
and some of the ladies, to even
watch an interesting video for dis-
cussion.
Come to 10 a.m. mass on
Wednesday and bring a friend!
Vandenberk asked everyone to
remember the sick and lonely dur-
ing the holidays, with a phone call
or a visit. There is no January meet-
ing, but there will be the annual
CWL Fun Nightin February.
Our council will be hosting a Day
of Recollection in March, as well
as the annual World Day of Prayer.
There will be a spring quilting bee
for our annual fall quilt raffle and
Mary Spindler has donated an af-
ghan for one of the prizes.
President Lia Vandenberk closed
the meeting with the distribution of
special gifts, CWL pens, to all the
members of her executive and
hard-working conveners, as a ges-
ture of thanks for their support.
Roberta Walker was awarded the
special CWL Maple Leaf Service
Pin, for years of outstanding contri-
butions to the League, with two
terms as president, communications
and publicity, and musical liturgy,
as special areas of expertise.
Mary Mennen received a gift bas-
ket as a token of thanks to a coura-
geous CWL member, loyal in sick-
ness and in health.
After the meeting, the women
joined their husbands for a Christ-
mas party in the hall, with refresh-
tlttattts served.
`Father Paul Beck was presented
with a beautiful Russian icon plate
as his Christmas/birthday gift,
while everyone sang "Happy Birth -

'4WD oto give a -smoke alarm or tae
-extinguisher, says Fire Chief ,may
Middleton, on behalf of the Exeter
Fire Prevention Bureau:
Battery-operated smoke alarms
can be real life savers. When pir-
chasing a smoke alarm, look for the
U.L.C. label which assures that it
meets safety standards. Installation
is easy - just two screws and a
screwdriver. Youmay even want to
include installation as part of your
gift. Ideally, every level of the
home should have a smoke alarm,
he said.
In fire extinguishers, a multi-
purpose dry chemical type is a wise
choice. This extinguisher can han-
dle most small -fires. Look for the
U.L.C. label that ensures the extin-
guisher meets safety standards.
